    An adventure at engineering design and modeling is possible with a Virtual Reality Environment (VRE) that uses multiple computer-generated media to let a user experience situations that are temporally and spatially prohibiting. In this paper, an approach to developing some advanced architecture and modeling tools is presented to allow multiple frameworks work together while being shielded from the application program. This architecture is being developed in a framework of workbench interactive tools for next generation nanoparticle-reinforced damping/dynamic systems.     Mathematical modelling of tissue-engineering angiogenesis

    We present a mathematical model for the vascularisation of a porous scaffold following implantation in vivo. The model is given as a set of coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) which describe the evolution in time of the amounts of the different tissue constituents inside the scaffold. Bifurcation analyses reveal how the extent of scaffold vascularisation changes as a function of the parameter values. For example, it is shown how the loss of seeded cells arising from slow infiltration of vascular tissue can be overcome using a prevascularisation strategy consisting of seeding the scaffold with vascular cells. Using certain assumptions it is shown how the system can be simplified to one which is partially tractable and for which some analysis is given. Limited comparison is also given of the model solutions with experimental data from the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay

    The lower South-West areas have for some time past been regarded as perhaps the most difficult areas in Western Australia from the point of view of rabbit control. The farmer here has to contend with several factors, peculiar to this area, which make his work more difficult. Such obstacles as bracken fern, falling timber, good burrowing soil and a long breeding season combined with small holdings, lack of rabbit control experience, partial use of the cleared areas (tobacco and potato growers) and a low income potential, have rendered the task of rabbit control exceedingly difficult for the average farmer, especially in the Manjimup-Pemberton areas

    Development of probabilistic models for quantitative pathway analysis of plant pest introduction for the EU territory

    This report demonstrates a probabilistic quantitative pathway analysis model that can be used in risk assessment for plant pest introduction into EU territory on a range of edible commodities (apples, oranges, stone fruits and wheat). Two types of model were developed: a general commodity model that simulates distribution of an imported infested/infected commodity to and within the EU from source countries by month; and a consignment model that simulates the movement and distribution of individual consignments from source countries to destinations in the EU. The general pathway model has two modules. Module 1 is a trade pathway model, with a Eurostat database of five years of monthly trade volumes for each specific commodity into the EU28 from all source countries and territories. Infestation levels based on interception records, commercial quality standards or other information determine volume of infested commodity entering and transhipped within the EU. Module 2 allocates commodity volumes to processing, retail use and waste streams and overlays the distribution onto EU NUTS2 regions based on population densities and processing unit locations. Transfer potential to domestic host crops is a function of distribution of imported infested product and area of domestic production in NUTS2 regions, pest dispersal potential, and phenology of susceptibility in domestic crops. The consignment model covers the several routes on supply chains for processing and retail use. The output of the general pathway model is a distribution of estimated volumes of infested produce by NUTS2 region across the EU28, by month or annually; this is then related to the accessible susceptible domestic crop. Risk is expressed as a potential volume of infested fruit in potential contact with an area of susceptible domestic host crop. The output of the consignment model is a volume of infested produce retained at each stage along the specific consignment trade chain

    Within the framework of the thermal wave model, an investigation is made of the longitudinal dynamics of high energy charged particle beams. The model includes the self-consistent interaction between the beam and its surroundings in terms of a nonlinear coupling impedance, and when resistive as well as reactive parts are included, the evolution equation becomes a generalised nonlinear Schroedinger equation including a nonlocal nonlinear term. These animals eat almost the same foods as the sheep and cattle and have substantially reduced the stock-carrying capacity of the river-frontage areas where they are found in the greatest numbers. Research into control methods was commenced in 1952 when Mr. L. A. Harrison undertook some investigations designed to ascertain the best line of approach to a poisoning campaign

    The rabbit in Australia has only a relatively short history*, but during that period, of 168 years, has probably done more harm to this country than any other pest. In Western Australia, as in some of the other States, investigations directed towards the improvement of control methods—particularly poisoning—have been intensified over recent years. Although it is recognised that no single method could accomplish eradication or give completely satisfactory control, it is also evident that the improvement of poisoning methods could help greatly. Some of our investigations have been aimed at improving techniques in poisoning procedure and also in finding better poisons. One of the new poisons, 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) has proved very effective

    Optical Conductivity in a Two-Band Superconductor: Pb

    We demonstrate the effect of bandstructure on the superconducting properties of Pb by calculating the strong-coupling features in the optical conductivity, σ(ω)\sigma(\omega), due to the electron-phonon interaction. The importance of momentum dependence in the calculation of the properties of superconductors has previously been raised for MgB2_2. Pb resembles MgB2_2 in that it is a two band superconductor in which the bands' contributions to the Fermi surface have very different topologies. We calculate σ(ω)\sigma(\omega) by calculating a memory function which has been recently used to analyze σ(ω)\sigma(\omega) of Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+δ_{8+\delta}. In our calculations the two components of the Fermi surface are described by parameterizations of de Haas--van Alphen data. We use a phonon spectrum which is a fit to neutron scattering data. By including the momentum dependence of the Fermi surface good agreement is found with the experimentally determined strong-coupling features which can be described by a broad peak at around 4.5 meV and a narrower higher peak around 8 meV of equal height. The calculated features are found to be dominated by scattering between states within the third band. By contrast scattering between states in the second band leads to strong-coupling features in which the height of the high energy peak is reduced by ∼50\sim 50% compared to that of the low energy peak. This result is similar to that in the conventional isotropic (momentum independent) treatment of superconductivity. Our results show that it is important to use realistic models of the bandstructure and phonons, and to avoid using momentum averaged quantities, in calculations in order to get quantitatively accurate results
