Effective Field Theory Approach to String Gas Cosmology
We derive the 4D low energy effective field theory for a closed string gas on
a time dependent FRW background. We examine the solutions and find that
although the Brandenberger-Vafa mechanism at late times no longer leads to
radion stabilization, the radion rolls slowly enough that the scenario is still
of interest. In particular, we find a simple example of the string inspired
dark matter recently proposed by Gubser and Peebles.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures, comments adde
The reduced cost of providing a nationally recognised service for familial hypercholesterolaemia
OBJECTIVE: Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) affects 1 in 500 people in the UK population and is associated with premature morbidity and mortality from coronary heart disease. In 2008, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommended genetic testing of potential FH index cases and cascade testing of their relatives. Commissioners have been slow to respond although there is strong evidence of cost and clinical effectiveness. Our study quantifies the recent reduced cost of providing a FH service using generic atorvastatin and compares NICE costing estimates with three suggested alternative models of care (a specialist-led service, a dual model service where general practitioners (GPs) can access specialist advice, and a GP-led service).METHODS: Revision of existing 3?year costing template provided by NICE for FH services, and prediction of costs for running a programme over 10?years. Costs were modelled for the first population-based FH service in England which covers Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth (SHIP). Population 1.95 million.RESULTS: With expiry of the Lipitor (Pfizer atorvastatin) patent the cost of providing a 10-year FH service in SHIP reduces by 42.5% (£4.88 million on patent vs £2.80 million off patent). Further cost reductions are possible as a result of the reduced cost of DNA testing, more management in general practice, and lower referral rates to specialists. For instance a dual-care model with GP management of patients supported by specialist advice when required, costs £1.89 million.CONCLUSIONS: The three alternative models of care are now <50% of the cost of the original estimates undertaken by NICE
Mission analysis of solar powered aircraft
The effect of a real mission scenario on a solar powered airplane configuration which had been developed in previous work were assessed. The mission used was surveillance of crop conditions over a route from Phoenix to Tucson to Tombstone, Arizona. Appendices are attached which address the applicability of existing platforms and payloads to do this mission
CMB observations with the Jodrell Bank - IAC interferometer at 33 GHz
The paper presents the first results obtained with the Jodrell Bank - IAC
two-element 33 GHz interferometer. The instrument was designed to measure the
level of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) fluctuations at angular scales
of 1 - 2 degrees. The observations analyzed here were taken in a strip of the
sky at Dec = +41 deg with an element separation of 16.7 lambda, which gives a
maximum sensitivity to ~1.6 deg structures on the sky. The data processing and
calibration of the instrument are described. The sensitivity achieved in each
of the two channels is 7 micro K per resolution element. A reconstruction of
the sky at Dec = +41 deg using a maximum entropy method shows the presence of
structure at a high level of significance. A likelihood analysis, assuming a
flat CMB spatial power spectrum, gives a best estimate of the level of CMB
fluctuations of Delta Tl = 43 (+13,-12) micro K for the range l = 109 +/- 19;
the main uncertainty in this result arises from sample variance. We consider
that the contamination from the Galaxy is small. These results represent a new
determination of the CMB power spectrum on angular scales where previous
results show a large scatter; our new results are in agreement with the
theoretical predictions of the standard inflationary cold dark matter models.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures. Web site at

Volume Stabilization and Acceleration in Brane Gas Cosmology
We investigate toy cosmological models in (1+m+p)-dimensions with gas of
p-branes wrapping over p-compact dimensions. In addition to winding modes, we
consider the effects of momentum modes corresponding to small vibrations of
branes and find that the extra dimensions are dynamically stabilized while the
others expand. Adding matter, the compact volume may grow slowly depending on
the equation of state. We also obtain solutions with winding and momentum modes
where the observed space undergoes accelerated expansion.Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures, v2: comments and references added, to appear in

String windings in the early universe
We study string dynamics in the early universe. Our motivation is the
proposal of Brandenberger and Vafa, that string winding modes may play a key
role in decompactifying three spatial dimensions. We model the universe as a
homogeneous but anisotropic 9-torus filled with a gas of excited strings. We
adopt initial conditions which fix the dilaton and the volume of the torus, but
otherwise assume all states are equally likely. We study the evolution of the
system both analytically and numerically to determine the late-time behavior.
We find that, although dynamical evolution can indeed lead to three large
spatial dimensions, such an outcome is not statistically favored.Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX, 4 eps figure
Full control of quadruple quantum dot circuit charge states in the single electron regime
We report the realization of an array of four tunnel coupled quantum dots in
the single electron regime, which is the first required step toward a scalable
solid state spin qubit architecture. We achieve an efficient tunability of the
system but also find out that the conditions to realize spin blockade readout
are not as straightforwardly obtained as for double and triple quantum dot
circuits. We use a simple capacitive model of the series quadruple quantum dots
circuit to investigate its complex charge state diagrams and are able to find
the most suitable configurations for future Pauli spin blockade measurements.
We then experimentally realize the corresponding charge states with a good
agreement to our model.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Manipulating a single adsorbed DNA for a critical endpoint
We show the existence of a critical endpoint in the phase diagram of
unzipping of an adsorbed double-stranded (ds) polymer like DNA. The competition
of base pairing, adsorption and stretching by an external force leads to the
critical end point. From exact results, the location of the critical end point
is determined and its classical nature established.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, Published versio
