    Collision damping in the pi 3He -> d'N reaction near the threshold

    We present a simple quantum mechanical model exploiting the optical potential approach for the description of collision damping in the reaction pi 3He -> d'N near the threshold, which recently has been measured at TRIUMF. The influence of the open d'N -> NNN channel is taken into account. It leads to a suppression factor of about ten in the d' survival probability.     Three-body decay of the d* dibaryon

    Under certain circumstances, a three-body decay width can be approximated by an integral involving a product of two off-shell two-body decay widths. This ``angle-average'' approximation is used to calculate the πNN\pi NN decay width of the d(Jπ=3+,T=0)d^*(J^\pi=3^+, T=0) dibaryon in a simple Δ2\Delta^2 model for the most important Feynman diagrams describing pion emissions with baryon-baryon recoil and meson retardation. The decay width is found to be about 0.006 (0.07, 0.5) MeV at the dd^* mass of 2065 (2100, 2150) MeV for input dynamics derived from the Full Bonn potential. The smallness of this width is qualitatively understood as the result of the three-body decay being ``third forbidden''. The concept of \ell forbiddenness and the threshold behavior of a three-body decay are further studied in connection with the πNN\pi NN decay of the dibaryon d(Jπ=0,T=0or2)d'(J^\pi=0^-, T=0 or 2) where the idea of unfavorness has to be introduced.     Search for Narrow NNpi Resonances in Exclusive p p -> p p pi+ pi- Measurements

    Narrow structures in the range of a few MeV have been searched for in p p pi+ and p p pi- invariant mass spectra obtained from exclusive measurements of the p p -> p p pi+ pi- reaction at Tp = 725, 750 and 775 MeV using the PROMICE/WASA detector at CELSIUS. The selected reaction is particularily well suited for the search for NN and / or N Delta decoupled dibaryon resonances. Except for a possible fluctuation at 2087 MeV/c^2 in Mpppi- no narrow structures could be identified neither in Mpppi+ nor in Mpppi- on the 3 sigma level of statistical significance, giving an upper limit (95% C.L.) for dibaryon production in this reaction of sigma < 20 nb for 2020 MeV/c^2 < m(dibaryon) < 2085 MeV/c^2Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure

    Search for Low Mass Exotic mesonic structures. Part I: experimental results

    Recently, several papers discussed on the existence of a low mass new structure at a mass close to M=214.3 MeV. It was suggested that the Σ+\Sigma^{+} disintegration: Σ+\Sigma^{+}\topP0^{0}, P0μμ+^{0}\to\mu^{-}\mu^{+} proceeds through an intermediate particle P0^{0} having such mass. The present work intends to look at other new or available data, in order to observe the eventual existence of small narrow peaks or shoulders in very low mesonic masses. Indeed narrow structures were already extracted from various data in dibaryons, baryons and mesons (at larger masses that those studied here).Comment: 7 pages 11 figure

    Exploring the beta distribution in variable-density turbulent mixing

    In assumed probability density function (pdf) methods of turbulent combustion, the shape of the scalar pdf is assumed a priori and the pdf is parametrized by its moments for which model equations are solved. In non-premixed flows the beta distribution has been a convenient choice to represent the mixture fraction in binary mixtures or a progress variable in combustion. Here the beta-pdf approach is extended to variable-density mixing: mixing between materials that have very large density differences and thus the scalar fields are active. As a consequence, new mixing phenomena arise due to 1) cubic non-linearities in the Navier-Stokes equation, 2) additional non-linearities in the molecular diffusion terms and 3) the appearance of the specific volume as a dynamical variable. The assumed beta-pdf approach is extended to transported pdf methods by giving the associated stochastic differential equation (SDE). The beta distribution is shown to be a realizable, consistent and sufficiently general representation of the marginal pdf of the fluid density, an active scalar, in non-premixed variable-density turbulent mixing. The moment equations derived from mass conservation are compared to the moment equations derived from the governing SDE. This yields a series of relations between the non-stationary coefficients of the SDE and the mixing physics. Our treatment of this problem is general: the mixing is mathematically represented by the divergence of the velocity field which can only be specified once the problem is defined. In this paper we seek to describe a theoretical framework to subsequent applications. We report and document several rigorous mathematical results, necessary for forthcoming work that deals with the applications of the current results to model specification, computation and validation of binary mixing of inert fluids.Comment: Added two paragraphs to Introduction + minor changes, Accepted in Journal of Turbulence, July 19, 201

    Conditional statistics of passive-scalar mixing in a confined wake flow

    Experimental results for conditional statistics in a confined turbulent wake were compared to the linear model and the transported probability density function (PDF) model for predicting the velocity conditioned on scalar mixture fraction and to a linear model for predicting the scalar mixture fraction conditioned on velocity. For velocity conditioned on scalar mixture fraction, the linear model was found to accurately predict the conditional transverse velocity, but for the conditional streamwise velocity, agreement between the experiments and the linear model was poor. The transverse conditional velocity was accurately predicted by the transported PDF model, but for the streamwise conditional velocity, a modified transported PDF model that incorporated two components of the scalar diffusivity tensor had to be used. Finally, it was found that a linear model for predicting the fluctuating scalar conditioned on velocity performed poorly due to the strongly non-Gaussian scalar PDF at the downstream locations investigated

    Low-lying S-wave and P-wave Dibaryons in a Nodal Structure Analysis

    The dibaryon states as six-quark clusters of exotic QCD states are investigated in this paper. With the inherent nodal surface structure analysis, the wave functions of the six-quark clusters (in another word, the dibaryons) are classified. The contribution of the hidden color channels are discussed. The quantum numbers of the low-lying dibaryon states are obtained. The States [ΩΩ](0,0+)[\Omega\Omega]_{(0,0^{+})}, [ΩΩ](0,2)[\Omega\Omega]_{(0,2^{-})}, [ΞΩ](1/2,0+)[\Xi^{*}\Omega]_{(1/2,0^{+})}, [ΣΣ](0,4)[\Sigma^{*}\Sigma^{*}]_{(0,4^{-})} and the hidden color channel states with the same quantum numbers are proposed to be the candidates of dibaryons, which may be observed in experiments.Comment: 29 pages, 2 figure

    ``Superfast'' Reaction in Turbulent Flow with Potential Disorder

    We explore the regime of ``superfast'' reactivity that has been predicted to occur in turbulent flow in the presence of potential disorder. Computer simulation studies confirm qualitative features of the previous renormalization group predictions, which were based on a static model of turbulence. New renormalization group calculations for a more realistic, dynamic model of turbulence show that the superfast regime persists. This regime, with concentration decay exponents greater than that for a well-mixed reaction, appears to be a general result of the interplay among non-linear reaction kinetics, turbulent transport, and local trapping by potential disorder.Comment: 14 pages. 4 figures.     Production Processes as a Tool to Study Parameterizations of Quark Confinement

    We introduce diquarks as separable correlations in the two-quark Green's function to facilitate the description of baryons as relativistic three-quark bound states. These states then emerge as solutions of Bethe-Salpeter equations for quarks and diquarks that interact via quark exchange. When solving these equations we consider various dressing functions for the free quark and diquark propagators that prohibit the existence of corresponding asymptotic states and thus effectively parameterize confinement. We study the implications of qualitatively different dressing functions on the model predictions for the masses of the octet baryons as well as the electromagnetic and strong form factors of the nucleon. For different dressing functions we in particular compare the predictions for kaon photoproduction, γpKΛ\gamma p\to K\Lambda, and associated strangeness production, pppKΛpp\to pK\Lambda with experimental data.
