Electronic transport in a Cantor stub waveguide network
We investigate theoretically, the character of electronic eigenstates and
transmission properties of a one dimensional array of stubs with Cantor
geometry. Within the framework of real space re-normalization group (RSRG) and
transfer matrix methods we analyze the resonant transmission and extended
wave-functions in a Cantor array of stubs, which lack translational order.
Apart from resonant states with high transmittance we unravel a whole family of
wave-functions supported by such an array clamped between two-infinite ordered
leads, which have an extended character in the RSRG scheme, but, for such
states the transmission coefficient across the lead-sample-lead structure
decays following a power-law as the system grows in size. This feature is
explained from renormalization group ideas and may lead to the possibility of
trapping of electronic, optical or acoustic waves in such hierarchical
geometries
Cross Sections for the Production of He+ (np) 2P0 States by 50 to 150 keV Proton Impact on Helium
Cross sections have been measured for the production of He+ (np) 2Po states, n=2,3,4, by proton impact on helium over a projectile velocity range of 1.42–2.45 a.u. (50 ≤E≤150 keV). Cross sections were determined by measuring the extreme ultraviolet photons emitted from excited He1 ions. The data indicate a lower energy than expected for the maximum cross section. A comparison of the present results in terms of projectile energy dependance with the cross sections for excitation to He (1snp) 1Po, ionization, and total electron capture suggests the primary mechanism for the production of excited He+ at low energies is transfer excitation, with ionization excitation being the dominant mechanism at higher energies
Noble gas films on a decagonal AlNiCo quasicrystal
Thermodynamic properties of Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe adsorbed on an Al-Ni-Co
quasicrystalline surface (QC) are studied with Grand Canonical Monte Carlo by
employing Lennard-Jones interactions with parameter values derived from
experiments and traditional combining rules. In all the gas/QC systems, a
layer-by-layer film growth is observed at low temperature. The monolayers have
regular epitaxial fivefold arrangements which evolve toward sixfold
close-packed structures as the pressure is increased. The final states can
contain either considerable or negligible amounts of defects. In the latter
case, there occurs a structural transition from five to sixfold symmetry which
can be described by introducing an order parameter, whose evolution
characterizes the transition to be continuous or discontinuous as in the case
of Xe/QC (first-order transition with associated latent heat). By simulating
fictitious noble gases, we find that the existence of the transition is
correlated with the size mismatch between adsorbate and substrate's
characteristic lengths. A simple rule is proposed to predict the phenomenon.Comment: 19 pages. 8 figures. (color figures can be seen at

Spectroscopy of Nine Cataclysmic Variable Stars
We present optical spectroscopy of nine cataclysmic binary stars, mostly
dwarf novae, obtained primarily to determine orbital periods Porb. The stars
and their periods are LX And, 0.1509743(5) d; CZ Aql, 0.2005(6) d; LU Cam,
0.1499686(4) d; GZ Cnc, 0.0881(4) d; V632 Cyg, 0.06377(8) d; V1006 Cyg,
0.09903(9) d; BF Eri, 0.2708804(4) d; BI Ori, 0.1915(5) d; and FO Per, for
which Porb is either 0.1467(4) or 0.1719(5) d.
Several of the stars proved to be especially interesting. In BF Eri, we
detect the absorption spectrum of a secondary star of spectral type K3 +- 1
subclass, which leads to a distance estimate of approximately 1 kpc. However,
BF Eri has a large proper motion (100 mas/yr), and we have a preliminary
parallax measurement that confirms the large proper motion and yields only an
upper limit for the parallax. BF Eri's space velocity is evidently large, and
it appears to belong to the halo population. In CZ Aql, the emission lines have
strong wings that move with large velocity amplitude, suggesting a
magnetically-channeled accretion flow. The orbital period of V1006 Cyg places
it squarely within the 2- to 3-hour "gap" in the distribution of cataclysmic

Erupting Dwarf Novae in the Large Magellanic Cloud
We report the first likely detections of erupting Dwarf Novae (DN) in an
external galaxy: the Large Magellanic Cloud. Six candidates were isolated from
approximately a million stars observed every second night over 11 nights with
the CTIO 8K x 8K Mosaic2 CCD imager. Artificial dwarf nova and completeness
tests suggest that we are seeing only the brightest of the LMC DN, probably SS
Cygni-like CVs, but possibly SU UMa-type cataclysmics undergoing
superoutbursts. We derive crude but useful limits on the LMC DN surface
density, and on the number of DN in the LMC. Many thousands of cataclysmic
variables in the Magellanic Clouds can be discovered and characterized with 8

Emission Line Flickering from the Secondary Star in Cataclysmic Variables? A study of V3885 Sagitarii
Spectrophotometric observations of H-alpha and He I 6678 emission lines of
the nova-like Cataclysmic Variable V3885 Sgr are presented and analyzed. The
binary orbital period was determined as P = 0.20716071(22) days. Doppler
Tomography was performed with both H-alpha and He I lines. Disc radial
emissivity profiles were also computed. The tomography mapping of flickering
sources was performed using the H-alpha line, from which we concluded that the
flickering is not uniformly distributed on the disc. The observed tomogram of
the flickering was compared with simulations, suggesting that the most intense
flickering source in the H-alpha is not located in the accretion disc. It is
proposed that the main line flickering source may be associated with the

UBVRI observations of the flickering of RS Ophiuchi at Quiescence
We report observations of the flickering variability of the recurrent nova RS
Oph at quiescence on the basis of simultaneous observations in 5 bands (UBVRI).
RS Oph has flickering source with (U-B)_0=-0.62 \pm 0.07, (B-V)_0=0.15 \pm
0.10, (V-R)_0=0.25 \pm 0.05. We find for the flickering source a temperature
T_fl = 9500 \pm 500 K, and luminosity L_fl = 50 - 150 L_sun (using a distance
of d=1.6kpc). We also find that on a (U-B) vs (B-V) diagram the flickering of
the symbiotic stars differs from that of the cataclysmic variables. The
possible source of the flickering is discussed. The data are available upon

Xe films on a decagonal Al-Ni-Co quasicrystal surface
The grand canonical Monte Carlo method is employed to study the adsorption of
Xe on a quasicrystalline Al-Ni-Co surface. The calculation uses a semiempirical
gas-surface interaction, based on conventional combining rules and the usual
Lennard-Jones Xe-Xe interaction. The resulting adsorption isotherms and
calculated structures are consistent with the results of LEED experimental
data. In this paper we focus on five features not discussed earlier (Phys. Rev.
Lett. 95, 136104 (2005)): the range of the average density of the adsorbate,
the order of the transition, the orientational degeneracy of the ground state,
the isosteric heat of adsorption of the system, and the effect of the vertical
