Toward a theory of organizational elements
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2005.Includes bibliographical references (leaf 71).Businesses are complex organizations with seemingly limitless interconnectedness and functionality. Organizational Charts are the limit to which many organizations consider their internal structure, while others build workflow models to identify and codify every keystroke and communique. In order to provide a middle ground between superficial Organizational Charts and elaborate workflow models, this thesis develops a simple and broadly applicable method of modeling organizations. In particular, ideas from computer program structuring are transplanted into organizational design. Initially, a theory of Organizational Elements is defined. Then characteristics common to the elements of the framework are explored and a small set of example elements is identified and developed. Finally, the framework is applied to two example organizations and recommendations for further work are presented.by Alson Remington Kemp, III.S.M

Use of multiple loop model for brushless doubly fed machine rotor design
The Brushless Doubly Fed Machine (BDFM) is receiving attention as a candidate for use in adjustable speed drives (ASDs) and variable speed generators (VSGs). With a large percentage of a drive or generator system's cost due to power electronics content, considerable research has been conducted to find drives in which the power electronics can be minimized. Generally, the power electronics in a drive must be able to process the full apparent power rating of the machine. With the BDFM, the power electronics must only process a fraction of the apparent power rating of the machine, and so can be less expensive than alternative solutions. Rotor designs for the BDFM have assumed that the currents in the rotor bars are evenly distributed and have used equal area rotor bars. Qualitative observation suggested that rotor currents are not distributed equally between the rotor bars. Test data and novel simulation methods were used to quantitatively assess the current distributions in the rotor bars. Rotor current distributions can be investigated three ways: finite element analysis, test data from a modified BDFM, and simulation using a novel multiple rotor circuit model. The latter two methods were employed to obtain the results presented in this thesis. The multiple loop model of the BDFM is presented and use of the model is described. Epidemiology and clinical aspects of hematological malignancies at the military hospital of Antananarivo
Background: Malignant hemopathies constitute a group of pathologies having in common the anomalies of the bone marrow or of the lymphatic system cells. In developed countries, the number and actual distribution of cancers is provided by cancer registries. In Madagascar there is no effective cancer registry and only two studies on malignant hemopathies have been carried out to date, but neither has described their epidemiology and clinical aspects. Thus, we aimed to describe the epidemiology and clinical aspects of malignant hemopathies managed in the Medical Oncology Unit of the Military Hospital of Antananarivo.Methods: It was a cross-sectional and descriptive study carried out at this unit from 1st December 2012 to 31st August 2015 (33 months). Authors included all patients followed, then excluded those without pathologic evidence, cases of monoclonal gammapathy of unknown significance and cases of solid cancers.Results: We followed up 57 cases of malignant hemopathies. The mean age was 49.39±15.46 years and the sex ratio was 1.71. Superficial lymphadenopathy was the most frequent warning signs (31.58%) and lymphomas were most represented (52.63%). There was a significant association between warning signs and diagnosis (p value <0.001).Conclusions: Present results are grossly similar to those of other African authors. Present results are distinguished by a low proportion of chronic myeloid leukemia and a very low proportion of chronic lymphocytic leukemia compared to literature data. The effectiveness of the cancer registry will allow us to improve the knowledge about frequency and current distribution of cancer in Madagascar
Alternative Transportation Energy
Transportation energy issues are moving to the forefront of the public consciousness in the U.S. and particularly California, and gaining increasing attention from legislators and regulators. The three principal concerns motivating interest in transportation energy are urban air quality, oil dependence, and the threat of global warming.
