A hybrid algorithm for coalition structure generation

    No full text
The current state-of-the-art algorithm for optimal coalition structure generation is IDP-IPā€”an algorithm that combines IDP (a dynamic programming algorithm due to Rahwan and Jennings, 2008b) with IP (a tree-search algorithm due to Rahwan et al., 2009). In this paper we analyse IDP-IP, highlight its limitations, and then develop a new approach for combining IDP with IP that overcomes these limitations

Radiocarbon determinations from the Mulifanua Lapita site, Upolu, western Samoa

The Mulifanua ferry berth has the distinction of being the only site in Samoa with dentate-stamped Lapita wares, and is the most easterly Lapita site in the Pacific. Two new radiocarbon determinations of material associated with Lapita pottery found at Mulifanua are presented. The accuracy of this data is evaluated according to the results of recent reassessment of pottery from the site, and current theories regarding the age of Lapita settlement in the eastern Pacific. The resulting calibrated radiocarbon ages put occupation of the Mulifanua Lapita site at around 2880-2750 cal BP (930ā€“800 BC). This conclusion is in agreement with the pottery chronology and supports recent hypotheses of rapid Lapita settlement in the Fiji/Tonga region around 2850ā€“2700 cal BP (900ā€“750 BC)

Variations on a theorem of Davenport concerning abundant numbers

Let \sigma(n) = \sum_{d \mid n}d be the usual sum-of-divisors function. In 1933, Davenport showed that that n/\sigma(n) possesses a continuous distribution function. In other words, the limit D(u):= \lim_{x\to\infty} \frac{1}{x}\sum_{n \leq x,~n/\sigma(n) \leq u} 1 exists for all u \in [0,1] and varies continuously with u. We study the behavior of the sums \sum_{n \leq x,~n/\sigma(n) \leq u} f(n) for certain complex-valued multiplicative functions f. Our results cover many of the more frequently encountered functions, including \varphi(n), \tau(n), and \mu(n). They also apply to the representation function for sums of two squares, yielding the following analogue of Davenport's result: For all u \in [0,1], the limit D~(u):=limā”Rā†’āˆž1Ļ€R#{(x,y)āˆˆZ2:0<x2+y2ā‰¤RĀ andĀ x2+y2Ļƒ(x2+y2)ā‰¤u} \tilde{D}(u):= \lim_{R\to\infty} \frac{1}{\pi R}\#\{(x,y) \in \Z^2: 0<x^2+y^2 \leq R \text{ and } \frac{x^2+y^2}{\sigma(x^2+y^2)} \leq u\} exists, and \tilde{D}(u) is both continuous and strictly increasing on [0,1]

    On Being Responsible

    No full text
Joint responsibility is a mental and behavioural state which captures and formalizes many of the intuitive underpinnings of collaborative problem solving. It defines the pre-conditions which must hold before such activity can commence, how individuals should behave (in their own problem solving and towards others) once such problem solving has begun and minimum conditions which group participants must satisfy
