Circumstellar environment of RX Puppis
The symbiotic Mira, RX Pup, shows long-term variations in its mean light
level due to variable obscuration by circumstellar dust. The last increase in
extinction towards the Mira, between 1995 and 2000, has been accompanied by
large changes in the degree of polarization in the optical and red spectral
range. The lack of any obvious associated changes in the position angle may
indicate the polarization variations are driven by changes in the properties of
the dust grains (e.g. variable quantity of dust and variable particle size
distribution, due to dust grain formation and growth) rather than changes in
the viewing geometry of the scattering region(s), e.g. due to the binary

Observation of enhanced transmission for s-polarized light through a subwavelength slit
Enhanced optical transmission (EOT) through subwavelength apertures is
usually obtained for p-polarized light. The present study experimentally
investigates EOT for s-polarized light. A subwavelength slit surrounded on each
side by periodic grooves has been fabricated in a gold film and covered by a
thin dielectric layer. The excitation of s-polarized dielectric waveguide modes
inside the dielectric film strongly increases the s-polarized transmission.
Transmission measurements are compared with a coupled mode model and show good
qualitative agreement. Adding a waveguide can improve light transmission
through subwavelength apertures, as both s and p-polarization can be

Scattering of surface plasmon polaritons by one-dimensional inhomogeneities
The scattering of surface plasmons polaritons by a one-dimensional defect of
the surface is theoretically studied, by means of both Rayleigh and modal
expansions. The considered defects are either relief perturbations or
variations in the permittivity of the metal. The dependence of transmission,
reflection and out-of-plane scattering on parameters defining the defect is
presented. We find that the radiated energy is forwardly directed (with respect
to the surface plasmon propagation) in the case of an impedance defect.
However, for relief defects, the radiated energy may be directed into backward
or forward (or both) directions, depending on the defect width.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, corrected typos, some minor modifications in

Bering Strait transports from satellite altimetry
TOPEX/POSEIDON altimetry data are used to compute sea level slopes across the Bering Strait and associated geostrophic transport anomalies through the strait during ice-free periods from 1992 to 2002. The satellite turning latitude near 66N is just north of the strait, allowing us to use data from seven nearly zonal altimeter tracks close to the strait and to provide estimates of mean slopes, geostrophic currents and water transports approximately every 1.5 days. The altimeter-derived transport anomalies far exceed the mean value and are in good agreement with those derived from in situ observations. Comparison to wind data from a nearby meteorological station in Uelen, Russia, shows that computed transport anomalies correlate well with strong along-strait winds and less so with winds from other directions, thus making the transport predictions from winds alone more successful in seasons with strong and persistent meridional winds
New exactly solvable systems with Fock symmetry
New superintegrable systems are presented which, like the Hydrogen atom,
possess a dynamical symmetry w.r.t. algebra o(4). One of them simulates a
neutral fermion with non-trivial dipole moment, interacting with the external
e.m. field. This system is presented in both non-relativistic and relativistic
formulations. Another recently discovered system (see arXiv:1208.2886v1) is
non-relativistic and includes the minimal and spin-orbit interaction with the
external electric field. It is shown that all the considered systems are shape
invariant. Applying this quality, these systems are integrated using the tools
of SUSY quantum mechanics.Comment: Section 6 and some new references are adde
`St\"uckelberg interferometry' with ultracold molecules
We report on the realization of a time-domain `St\"uckelberg interferometer',
which is based on the internal state structure of ultracold Feshbach molecules.
Two subsequent passages through a weak avoided crossing between two different
orbital angular momentum states in combination with a variable hold time lead
to high-contrast population oscillations. This allows for a precise
determination of the energy difference between the two molecular states. We
demonstrate a high degree of control over the interferometer dynamics. The
interferometric scheme provides new possibilities for precision measurements

Quantum versus classical descriptions of sub-Poissonian light generation in three-wave mixing
Sub-Poissonian light generation in the non-degenerate three-wave mixing is
studied numerically and analytically within quantum and classical approaches.
Husimi Q-functions and their classical trajectory simulations are analysed to
reveal a special regime corresponding to the time-stable sub-Poissonian
photocount statistics of the sum-frequency mode. Conditions for observation of
this regime are discussed. Theoretical predictions of the Fano factor and
explanation of the extraordinary stabilization of the sub-Poissonian photocount
behavior are obtained analytically by applying the classical trajectories.
Scaling laws for the maximum sub-Poissonian behavior are found. Noise
suppression levels in the non-degenerate vs degenerate three-wave mixing are
discussed on different time scales compared to the revival times. It is shown
that the non-degenerate conversion offers much better stabilization of the
suppressed noise in comparison to that of degenerate process.Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures, to be published in J. Optics
