    Faster, Smaller, Cheaper: An Hedonic Price Analysis of PDAs

    We compute quality-adjusted price indexes for Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) for the period 1999-2004, using data on prices and characteristics of 203 models sold by 12 manufacturers. The PDA market is growing in size, it is technologically dynamic with very substantial changes in measured characteristics over time, and it has experienced rapid rates of product introduction. Hedonic regressions consistently show prices to be positively related to processor performance, RAM memory, permanent storage capacity, and battery life, as well as several measures of screen size and quality. Features such as networking, biometric identification, camera, and cellphone capability are also positively associated with price. Hedonic price indexes implied by these regressions decline at an AAGR of 21.1% to 25.6% per year during this period. A matched model price index computed from a subset of observations declines at 18.75% per year. Though these PDA rates of price decline are lower than have been estimated for desktop and laptop PCs, consumers in this "ultra-portable" segment of the computer market appear to have enjoyed substantial welfare gains over the past five years.

    Scanning tunneling microscopy and kinetic Monte Carlo investigation of Cesium superlattices on Ag(111)

    Cesium adsorption structures on Ag(111) were characterized in a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy experiment. At low coverages, atomic resolution of individual Cs atoms is occasionally suppressed in regions of an otherwise hexagonally ordered adsorbate film on terraces. Close to step edges Cs atoms appear as elongated protrusions along the step edge direction. At higher coverages, Cs superstructures with atomically resolved hexagonal lattices are observed. Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations model the observed adsorbate structures on a qualitative level.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

    New limits on "odderon" amplitudes from analyticity constraints

    In studies of high energy pppp and pˉp\bar pp scattering, the odd (under crossing) forward scattering amplitude accounts for the difference between the pppp and pˉp\bar pp cross sections. Typically, it is taken as f−=−p4πDsα−1eiπ(1−α)/2f_-=-\frac{p}{4\pi}Ds^{\alpha-1}e^{i\pi(1-\alpha)/2} (α∌0.5\alpha\sim 0.5), which has Δσ,Δρ→0\Delta\sigma, \Delta\rho\to0 as s→∞s\to\infty, where ρ\rho is the ratio of the real to the imaginary portion of the forward scattering amplitude. However, the odd-signatured amplitude can have in principle a strikingly different behavior, ranging from having Δσ→\Delta\sigma\tonon-zero constant to having Δσ→ln⁥s/s0\Delta\sigma \to \ln s/s_0 as s→∞s\to\infty, the maximal behavior allowed by analyticity and the Froissart bound. We reanalyze high energy pppp and pˉp\bar pp scattering data, using new analyticity constraints, in order to put new and precise limits on the magnitude of ``odderon'' amplitudes.Comment: 13 pages LaTex, 6 figure

    Generation of three-dimensional prototype models based on cone beam computed tomography

    Purpose: The purpose of this study was to generate three-dimensional models based on digital volumetric data that can be used in basic and advanced education. Methods: Four sets of digital volumetric data were established by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) (Accuitomo, J. Morita, Kyoto, Japan). Datasets were exported as Dicom formats and imported into Mimics and Magic software programs to separate the different tissues such as nerve, tooth and bone. These data were transferred to a Polyjet 3D Printing machine (Eden 330, Object, Israel) to generate the models. Results: Three-dimensional prototype models of certain limited anatomical structures as acquired volumetrically were fabricated. Conclusions: Generating three-dimensional models based on CBCT datasets is possible. Automated routine fabrication of these models, with the given infrastructure, is too time-consuming and therefore too expensiv

    Technical Change, Investment and Energy Intensity

The framework applied represents an accounting of technical change components, comprising autonomous as well as embodied and induced technical change. The inducement of embodied technical change is introduced by an equation for the physical capital stock that is a fixed factor in the short-run. The dataset on capital services and user costs of capital in EUKLEMS enables explaining capital accumulation depending on factor prices.     A relativistic parton cascade with radiation

    We consider the evolution of a parton system which is formed at the central rapidity region just after an ultrarelativistic heavy ion collision. The evolution of the system, which is composed of gluons, quarks and antiquarks, is described by a relativistic Boltzmann equations with collision terms including radiation and retardation effects. The equations are solved by the test particle method using Monte-Carlo sampling. Our simulations do not show any evidence of kinetic equilibration, unless the cross sections are artificially increased to unrealistically large values.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

    Nilpotent Classical Mechanics

    The formalism of nilpotent mechanics is introduced in the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian form. Systems are described using nilpotent, commuting coordinates η\eta. Necessary geometrical notions and elements of generalized differential η\eta-calculus are introduced. The so called s−s-geometry, in a special case when it is orthogonally related to a traceless symmetric form, shows some resemblances to the symplectic geometry. As an example of an η\eta-system the nilpotent oscillator is introduced and its supersymmetrization considered. It is shown that the RR-symmetry known for the Graded Superfield Oscillator (GSO) is present also here for the supersymmetric η\eta-system.
