How Students Make Book Choices
In an effort to learn the extent and variety of factors that influence students\u27 book selection, the study reported here was undertaken. The researchers also questioned students regarding what they liked to read about, what authors they liked, and books they had recently read and enjoyed. A total of 688 fifth through eighth grade students enrolled in public schools in two small cities in Nebraska and California responded to a questionnaire. Numbers of respondents from both sexes were fairly evenly distributed across four grades
High-speed Imaging of a Bulk Metallic Glass During Uniaxial Compression
High-speed imaging directly correlates the propagation of a particular shear band with mechanical measurements during uniaxial compression of a bulk metallic glass. Imaging shows shear occurs simultaneously over the entire shear plane, and load data, synced and time-stamped to the same clock as the camera, reveal that shear sliding is coincident with the load drop of each serration. Digital image correlation agrees with these results. These data demonstrate that shear band sliding occurs with velocities on the order of millimeters per second. Fracture occurs much more rapidly than the shear banding events, thereby readily leading to melting on fracture surfaces

Immobilization on a Nanomagnetic Co/C Surface Using ROM Polymerization: Generation of a Hybrid Material as Support for a Recyclable Palladium Catalyst
A novel hybrid material is reported as support for a recyclable palladium catalyst via surface immobilization of a ligand onto Co-based magnetic nanoparticles (NPs). A standard “click” reaction is utilized to covalently attach a norbornene tag (Nb-tag) to the surface of the carbon coated cobalt NPs. The hybrid magnetic nanoparticles are produced by initiating polymerization of a mixture containing both Nb-tagged ligand (Nb-tagged PPh 3) and Nb-tagged carbon coated cobalt NPs. In turn, the norbornene units are suitably functionalized to serve as ligands for metal catalysts. A composite material is thus obtained which furnishes a loading that is one order of magnitude higher than the value obtained previously for the synthesis of functionalized Co/C-nanopowders. This allows for its application as a hybrid support with high local catalyst concentrations, as demonstrated for the immobilization of a highly active and recyclable palladium complex for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions. Due to the explicit magnetic moment of the cobalt- NPs, the overall magnetization of this organic/inorganic framework is significantly higher than of polymer coated iron oxide nanoparticles with comparable metal content, hence, its rapid separation from the reaction mixture and recycling via an external magnetic field is not hampered by the functionalized polymer shell
Against all odds: Tentative steps toward efficient information sharing in groups
When groups face difficult problems, the voices of experts may be lost in the noise of others’ contributions. We present results from a “naturally noisy” setting, a large first-year undergraduate class, in which the expert’s voice was “lost” to such a degree that bringing forward even more inferior information was optimal. A single individual had little chance to improve the outcome and coordinating with the whole group was impossible. In this setting, we examined the change in behavior before and after people could talk to their neighbors. We found that the number of people who reduced noise by holding back their information strongly and significantly increased
Bulk Metallic Glasses Deform via Slip Avalanches
Inelastic deformation of metallic glasses occurs via slip events with
avalanche dynamics similar to those of earthquakes. For the first time in these
materials, measurements have been obtained with sufficiently high temporal
resolution to extract both the exponents and the scaling functions that
describe the nature, statistics and dynamics of the slips according to a simple
mean-field model. These slips originate from localized deformation in shear
bands. The mean-field model describes the slip process as an avalanche of
rearrangements of atoms in shear transformation zones (STZs). Small slips show
the predicted power-law scaling and correspond to limited propagation of a
shear front, while large slips are associated with uniform shear on
unconstrained shear bands. The agreement between the model and data across
multiple independent measures of slip statistics and dynamics provides
compelling evidence for slip avalanches of STZs as the elementary mechanism of
inhomogeneous deformation in metallic glasses.Comment: Article: 11 pages, 4 figures, plus Supplementary Material: 16 pages,

Monomer-on-Monomer (MoM) Mitsunobu Reaction: Facile Purification Utilizing Surface-Initiated Sequestration
A monomer-on-monomer (MoM) Mitsunobu reaction utilizing norbornenyl-tagged (Nb-tagged) reagents is reported, whereby purification was rapidly achieved by employing ring-opening metathesis polymerization which is initiated by any of three methods utilizing Grubbs catalyst (i) free catalyst in solution, (ii) surface-initiated catalyst-armed silica or (iii) surface-initiated catalyst-armed Co/C magnetic nanoparticles

VSHOT: a tool for characterizing large, imprecise reflectors
A prototype Video Scanning Hartmann Optical Tester (VSHOT) has been developed to characterize the optics of dish-type solar concentrators. VSHOT is a flexible platform that may characterize any large reflector with a focal length over diameter ratio (f{number_sign}) greater than 0. 45, and RMS optical error in the 0. I - I 0 milliradian range. The VSHOT hardware, software, and operation are described. Measurement uncertainty and preliminary test results are discussed. Another potential application being explored for the VSHOT is the quality assurance of slumped-glass automobile windshields. Preliminary test results from a reference optic and a section of a windshield are presented
Universal Quake Statistics: From Compressed Nanocrystals to Earthquakes
Slowly-compressed single crystals, bulk metallic glasses (BMGs), rocks, granular materials, and the earth all deform via intermittent slips or “quakes”. We find that although these systems span 12 decades in length scale, they all show the same scaling behavior for their slip size distributions and other statistical properties. Remarkably, the size distributions follow the same power law multiplied with the same exponential cutoff. The cutoff grows with applied force for materials spanning length scales from nanometers to kilometers. The tuneability of the cutoff with stress reflects “tuned critical” behavior, rather than self-organized criticality (SOC), which would imply stress-independence. A simple mean field model for avalanches of slipping weak spots explains the agreement across scales. It predicts the observed slip-size distributions and the observed stress-dependent cutoff function. The results enable extrapolations from one scale to another, and from one force to another, across different materials and structures, from nanocrystals to earthquakes
