Space shuttle: Aerodynamic characteristics of a composite booster/040A orbiter launch configuration with fin and booster body configuration effect contribution
An investigation was made of the fin configuration and booster body configuration effects on a composite booster/040A orbiter launch configuration. Aerodynamic performance and stability characteristics in pitch and yaw were obtained. Configurations tested included two stepped cylindrical bodies of different lengths with a conical nose, four fin shapes of various sizes and aspect ratios mounted in different positions around the base of the bodies, two base flare angles and three 040A orbiter configurations. The orbiter variations included a tailless configuration and two tail sizes. A tailless booster launch configuration with deflected petals (expanded flare sectors) was also tested. The model scale was 0.003366. Data were converted to coefficient form in near real time, punched on cards, and tabulated. The cards used in conjunction with a Benson-Lehner plotter were used to provide plotted data. At the end of the test, tabulated input forms were completed for the SADSAC computer program to aid in publishing the final test data report
Forebody and vertical stabilizer effects on directional stability of a reusable LOX/RP (061) booster AR 12161-2
Results are presented of a wind tunnel test on the directional stability of space shuttle booster configurations. The test was conducted at the 14-inch trisonic tunnel starting 6 December 1971 and continued through 11 December 1971 for a total of 66 occupancy hours. Configurations tested included a cylindrical body with two axisymmetrical noses, one with and without canopy, one delta wing, located in two positions, five vertical tails (including a V tail), two having split rudders, ventral fins, two sets of chines, three airbreathing engine pods, and rocket engine shrouds. Non-nequilibrium model on Apollonian networks
We investigate the Majority-Vote Model with two states () and a noise
on Apollonian networks. The main result found here is the presence of the
phase transition as a function of the noise parameter . We also studies de
effect of redirecting a fraction of the links of the network. By means of
Monte Carlo simulations, we obtained the exponent ratio ,
, and for several values of rewiring probability . The
critical noise was determined and also was calculated. The
effective dimensionality of the system was observed to be independent on ,
and the value is observed for these networks. Previous
results on the Ising model in Apollonian Networks have reported no presence of
a phase transition. Therefore, the results present here demonstrate that the
Majority-Vote Model belongs to a different universality class as the
equilibrium Ising Model on Apollonian Network.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Diffusive transport in networks built of containers and tubes
We developed analytical and numerical methods to study a transport of
non-interacting particles in large networks consisting of M d-dimensional
containers C_1,...,C_M with radii R_i linked together by tubes of length l_{ij}
and radii a_{ij} where i,j=1,2,...,M. Tubes may join directly with each other
forming junctions. It is possible that some links are absent. Instead of
solving the diffusion equation for the full problem we formulated an approach
that is computationally more efficient. We derived a set of rate equations that
govern the time dependence of the number of particles in each container
N_1(t),N_2(t),...,N_M(t). In such a way the complicated transport problem is
reduced to a set of M first order integro-differential equations in time, which
can be solved efficiently by the algorithm presented here. The workings of the
method have been demonstrated on a couple of examples: networks involving
three, four and seven containers, and one network with a three-point junction.
Already simple networks with relatively few containers exhibit interesting
transport behavior. For example, we showed that it is possible to adjust the
geometry of the networks so that the particle concentration varies in time in a
wave-like manner. Such behavior deviates from simple exponential growth and

A novel dielectric tensiometer enabling precision PID-based irrigation control of polytunnel-grown strawberries in coir
The benefits of closed-loop irrigation control have been demonstrated in grower trials which show the potential for improved crop yields and resource usage. Managing water use, by controlling irrigation in response to soil or substrate moisture changes, to meet crop water demands is a popular approach but requires substrate specific moisture sensor calibrations and knowledge of the moisture levels that result in water deficit or overwatering. The use of water tension sensors removes the need for substrate specific calibration and enables a more direct relationship with hydraulic conductivity. In this paper, we present a novel dielectric tensiometer that has been designed specifically for use in soil-free substrates such as coir, peat and Rockwool with a water tension measurement range of 0.7 kPa to 2.5 kPa. This new sensor design has also been integrated with a precision PID-based (drip) irrigation controller in a small-scale coir substrate strawberry growing trial: 32 strawberry plants in 4 coir growbags under a polytunnel. The data illustrates that excellent regulation of water tension in coir can be achieved which delivers robust and
precise irrigation control - matching water delivery to the demands of the plants. During a 30-day growing period vapour pressure deficit (VPD) and daily water use data was collected and the irrigation controller set to maintain coir water tension at the following levels: 0.90 kPa, 0.95 kPa and 1 kPa for at least 7 consecutive days at each level. For each setpoint the coir water tension was maintained by the irrigation controller to within ±0.05 kPa. Meanwhile the polytunnel VPD varied diurnally from 0 to a maximum of 5 kPa over the trial period. Furthermore, the combination of the dielectric tensiometer and the method of PID-based irrigation control resulted in a linear relationship between daily average VPD and daily water use over 10 days during the cropping period
Netons: Vibrations of Complex Networks
We consider atoms interacting each other through the topological structure of
a complex network and investigate lattice vibrations of the system, the quanta
of which we call {\em netons} for convenience. The density of neton levels,
obtained numerically, reveals that unlike a local regular lattice, the system
develops a gap of a finite width, manifesting extreme rigidity of the network
structure at low energies. Two different network models, the small-world
network and the scale-free network, are compared: The characteristic structure
of the former is described by an additional peak in the level density whereas a
power-law tail is observed in the latter, indicating excitability of netons at
arbitrarily high energies. The gap width is also found to vanish in the

Radiation exposure of LDEF: Initial results
Initial results from LDEF include radiation detector measurements from four experiments, P0006, P0004, M0004, and A0015. The detectors were located on both the leading and trailing edges of the orbiter and also on the Earthside end. This allowed the directional dependence of the incoming radiation to be measured. Total absorbed doses from thermoluminescent detectors (TLDs) verified the predicted spatial east-west dose ratio dependence of a factor approx. 2.5, due to trapped proton anisotropy in the South Atlantic Anomaly. On the trailing edge of the orbiter a range of doses from 6.64 to 2.91 Gy were measured under Al equivalent shielding of 0.42 to 1.11 g/sq cm. A second set of detectors near this location yielded doses of 6.48 to 2.66 Gy under Al equivalent shielding of 0.48 to 15.4 g/sq cm. On the leading edge, doses of 2.58 to 2.10 Gy were found under Al equivalent shielding of 1.37 to 2.90 g/sq cm. Initial charged particle LET (linear energy transfer) spectra, fluxes, doses and dose equivalents, for LET in H2O greater than or = 8 keV/micron, were measured with plastic nuclear track detectors (PNTDs) located in two experiments. Also preliminary data on low energy neutrons were obtained from detectors containing (6)LiF foils
Low prevalence, quasi-stationarity and power-law distribution in a model of spreading
Understanding how contagions (information, infections, etc) are spread on
complex networks is important both from practical as well as theoretical point
of view. Considerable work has been done in this regard in the past decade or
so. However, most models are limited in their scope and as a result only
capture general features of spreading phenomena. Here, we propose and study a
model of spreading which takes into account the strength or quality of
contagions as well as the local (probabilistic) dynamics occurring at various
nodes. Transmission occurs only after the quality-based fitness of the
contagion has been evaluated by the local agent. The model exhibits
quality-dependent exponential time scales at early times leading to a slowly
evolving quasi-stationary state. Low prevalence is seen for a wide range of
contagion quality for arbitrary large networks. We also investigate the
activity of nodes and find a power-law distribution with a robust exponent
independent of network topology. Our results are consistent with recent
