A lean way of design and production for healthcare construction projects

    Get PDF
As a consequence of the lack of solid conceptual foundation, the project management concepts and techniques usually applied within the construction sector are fragmented and have proved to be incapable of solving the complex problems of design management. As a result, healthcare providers have become frustrated with the outcomes such as cost and schedule overruns, accidents, less than expected quality and inadequate functionality. However, an investigation of successful healthcare projects reveals that new approaches have been developed to tackle such problems. This study uses recent data based on six construction projects. The idea is demonstrate how successful projects are dealing with the integration between design, production, and operations, through an appropriate approach to the management of production systems. The paper aims to assist the different parties of the AEC industry to better understand how practices applied into design phase could support the efficiency in the management of production systems

Lean knowledge management : the problem of value

    Get PDF
Lean knowledge management is defined here as: getting the right information, in the right form, to the right people at the right time. This definition highlights series of practical problems for knowledge management in the built environment which, in turn, have implications for lean theory. In the terms of TFV theory, the problems that arise from getting information to the right people at the right time are essentially flow (F) issues, but those that are concerned with defining the right information and the form in which it is to be delivered are more concerned with value (V). Here, we focus primarily on the problem of defining right information. A distinction is made between sociological 'values' and economic 'value', showing how both relate to production theory. In the course of benefits capture and realisation, both values and value are negotiated between project participants and other stakeholders. It is argued that these processes are best conceived as conversations and that this is implied in the basic formulation of V theory. The notion of objectivity and its significance for these values/value negotiations is examined. The problem of benefits realisation is considered and a set of hypotheses are generated regarding the nature of an effective benefits realization management process

The impact of atrazine on several biochemical properties of chernozem soil

    Get PDF
The impact of the pesticide atrazine on biochemical processes in soil was investigated. Atrazine loadings of 8.0, 40.0 and 80.0 mg/kg soil were laboratory tested in an experiment set up on a clay loam soil. Dehydrogenase activity, change in biomass carbon, soil respiration and metabolic coefficient were examined. The samples were collected for analysis 1, 7, 14, 21, 30 and 60 days after atrazine application. The acquired data indicated that the effect of atrazine on the biochemical activity of the soil depended on its application rate and duration of activity, and the effect was either stimulating or inhibiting. However, the detected changes were found to be transient, indicating that there is no real risk of the compound disrupting the balance of biochemical processes in soil

Excisional treatment of cavernous hemangioma of the liver

    Get PDF
Fifteen patients had hepatic hemangiomas removed with liver resections that ranged in extent from local excision to right trisegmentectomy. There was no mortality and little morbidity. The propriety and feasibility of extirpative treatment of such liver tumors has been emphasized by this experience

New Kadampa Buddhists and Jungian psychological type

    Get PDF
Building on previous studies on Canadian Anglicans and Catholics, this study examines and discusses the psychological type profile of 31 adherents to New Kadampa Buddhism. Like Anglicans and Catholics, Buddhists preferred introversion (I). Like Anglicans who preferred intuition (N) and unlike Catholics who preferred sensing (S), Buddhists displayed a preference for intuition (N). Unlike Anglicans and Catholics who both preferred feeling (F), Buddhists displayed a balance between feeling (F) and thinking (T). Like Anglicans and unlike Catholics, Buddhists preferred the Apollonian temperament (NF) over the Epimethean temperament (SJ). These data are discussed to interpret the psychological appeal of New Kadampa Buddhism

    Spread Supersymmetry

In the multiverse the scale of SUSY breaking, \tilde{m} = F_X/M_*, may scan and environmental constraints on the dark matter density may exclude a large range of \tilde{m} from the reheating temperature after inflation down to values that yield a LSP mass of order a TeV. After selection effects, the distribution for \tilde{m} may prefer larger values. A single environmental constraint from dark matter can then lead to multi-component dark matter, including both axions and the LSP, giving a TeV-scale LSP lighter than the corresponding value for single-component LSP dark matter. If SUSY breaking is mediated to the SM sector at order X^* X, only squarks, sleptons and one Higgs doublet acquire masses of order \tilde{m}. The gravitino mass is lighter by a factor of M_*/M_Pl and the gaugino masses are suppressed by a further loop factor. This Spread SUSY spectrum has two versions; the Higgsino masses are generated in one from supergravity giving a wino LSP and in the other radiatively giving a Higgsino LSP. The environmental restriction on dark matter fixes the LSP mass to the TeV domain, so that the squark and slepton masses are order 10^3 TeV and 10^6 TeV in these two schemes. We study the spectrum, dark matter and collider signals of these two versions of Spread SUSY. The Higgs is SM-like and lighter than 145 GeV; monochromatic photons in cosmic rays arise from dark matter annihilations in the halo; exotic short charged tracks occur at the LHC, at least for the wino LSP; and there are the eventual possibilities of direct detection of dark matter and detailed exploration of the TeV-scale states at a future linear collider. Gauge coupling unification is as in minimal SUSY theories. If SUSY breaking is mediated at order X, a much less hierarchical spectrum results---similar to that of the MSSM, but with the superpartner masses 1--2 orders of magnitude larger than in natural theories.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure

The use of cyclosporin A and prednisone in cadaver kidney transplantation

    Get PDF
Eighteen patients were treated with primary cadaveric renal transplantation using cyclosporin A therapy, and four more patients underwent cadaveric retransplantation. Eleven of the 22 recipients were conditioned with lymphoid depletion before transplantation, using thoracic duct drainage or lymphapheresis for two to eight and one-half weeks. cyclosporin A was begun a few hours before grafting. The other 11 patients were pretreated wtih cyclosporin A for from one day to 18 days. After transplantation, the majority of patients in both subgroups of 11 had rejection develop, but in most, the immunologic process was readily controlled with relatively small dosages of prednisone. After follow-up periods of two to four and one-half months, one patient has died of the complications of a coronary artery reconstruction that was not related to the transplantation. Another graft was lost from rejection, and a third organ was removed because of ureteral necrosis. Nineteen of the original 22 cadaveric kidneys are functioning, including 17 of the 18 kidneys given to patients who were undergoing transplantation for the first time. The only loss in the latter group of 18 patients was in the patient who died after an open heart operation. Results of these studies have shown that cyclosporin A is a superior and safe immunosuppressive drug but that, for optimal use in cadaveric transplantation, it usually should not be given alone. Steroid therapy greatly amplified the value of cyclosporin A. Unless major delayed morbidity develops which is not obvious so far, this drug combination should permit revolutionary advances ion the transplantation of all organs. Other adjunct to the cyclosporin A-steroid combination, including lymphoid depletion techniques, will require further investigation

Measuring attitude towards Buddhism and Sikhism : internal consistency reliability for two new instruments

    Get PDF
This paper describes and discusses the development and empirical properties of two new 24-item scales – one measuring attitude toward Buddhism and the other measuring attitude toward Sikhism. The scale is designed to facilitate inter-faith comparisons within the psychology of religion alongside the well-established Francis Scale of Attitude toward Christianity. Data were obtained from a multi-religious sample of 369 school pupils aged between 13 and 15 in London. Application of the two scales demonstrated that adolescents had a more positive attitude to Buddhism than Sikhism. The findings confirm the reliability of the scales and commend them for further use
