[Review of] Thomas Kochman, Black and White Styles in Conflict

    Get PDF
Race, class and culture are the ingredients of black-white relations in America. Thomas Kochman\u27s book attempts to separate out the cultural component of this mix and to examine it because he believes that it is both ignored and the source of much interracial conflict. The author is Professor of Communications and Theatre at the University of Illinois and has taught and researched in the area of black language and behavior. His background has clearly made him sensitive to aspects of black culture, a sensitivity he exploits in his book

A general aerodynamic approach to the problem of decaying or growing vibrations of thin, flexible wings with supersonic leading and trailing edges and no side edges

    Get PDF
Indicial aerodynamic influence coefficients were evaluated from potential theory for a thin, flexible wing with supersonic leading and trailing edges only. The analysis is based on the use of small surface areas in which the downwash is assumed uniform. Within this limitation, the results are exact except for the restriction of linearized theory. The areas are not restricted either to square boxes or Mach boxes. A given area may be any rectangle or square which may or may not be cut by the Mach forecone, and any area can be used anywhere in the forecone without loss of accuracy

A Challenge to All: Raising the Participation and Success of Women and Minorities in Mathematics, Science, and Technlogy

This issue of our journal is the product of a Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition (VMSC) conference titled, Programs That Work and held in March, 2000 on the issues of raising both the levels of success and the levels of participation of women and minorities in mathematics, science, and technology. Traditionally, these two groups have had low rates of participation in these subjects, and we believe this situation can and must be changed. The conference was to Coalition\u27s first direct assault on the problem

We construct smooth BPS three-charge geometries that resolve the zero-entropy singularity of the U(1) x U(1) invariant black ring. This singularity is resolved by a geometric transition that results in geometries without any branes sources or singularities but with non-trivial topology. These geometries are both ground states of the black ring, and non-trivial microstates of the D1-D5-P system. We also find the form of the geometries that result from the geometric transition of N zero-entropy black rings, and argue that, in general, such geometries give a very large number of smooth bound-state three-charge solutions, parameterized by 6N functions. The generic microstate solution is specified by a four-dimensional hyper-Kahler geometry of a certain signature, and contains a ``foam'' of non-trivial two-spheres. We conjecture that these geometries will account for a significant part of the entropy of the D1-D5-P black hole, and that Mathur's conjecture might reduce to counting certain hyper-Kahler manifolds.Comment: 40 pages, harvmac. v2 references added, typo correcte

Doing it the Wimba way - an initial evaluation of a voice tool for learning

    Get PDF
The internationalisation of the higher education sector presents many challenges for both learners and educators. One challenge is the provision of effective feedback on the assessment of written tasks. Such feedback forms part of the assessment process of the Introductory Academic Program (IAP), a five week pre-semester program to induct international postgraduate AusAID students at the University of Adelaide, into a western-style academic culture. During the most recent IAP students were required to complete several written tasks, one of which was an extended piece of academic writing. This task presented the opportunity to trial a new technology that might provide another dimension to the written feedback. Students were therefore given written feedback and an individualised podcast from the assessor, via the Wimba1 voicetool. This enabled the students to be better informed about their writing from discussions with peers and also in formal meetings with academic staff. This paper will focus on the information obtained from survey data and staff observations about the usefulness of the Wimba Voice tool in a multicultural teaching environment.Richard Warne

    Molecular films associated with LDEF

    Get PDF
The molecular films deposited on the surface of the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) originated from the paints and room-temperature-vulcanized (RTV) silicone materials intentionally used on the satellite and not from residual contaminants. The high silicone content of most of the films and the uniformity of the films indicates a homogenization process in the molecular deposition and suggests a chemically most favored composition for the final film. The deposition on interior surfaces and vents indicated multiple bounce trajectories or repeated deposition-reemission cycles. Exterior surface deposits indicated a significant return flux. Ultraviolet light exposure was required to fix the deposited film as is indicated by the distribution of the films on interior surfaces and the thickness of films at the vent locations. Thermal conditions at the time of exposure to ultraviolet light seems to be an important factor in the thickness of the deposit. Sunrise facing (ram direction) surfaces always had the thicker film. These were the coldest surfaces at the time of their exposure to ultraviolet light. The films have a layered structure suggesting cyclic deposition. As many as 34 distinct layers were seen in the films. The cyclic nature of the deposition and the chemical uniformity of the film one layer to the next suggest an early deposition of the films though there is evidence for the deposition of molecular films throughout the nearly six year exposure of the satellite. A final 'spray' of an organic material associated with water soluble salts occurred very late in the mission. This may have been the result of one of the shuttle dump activities
