The effect of grain size on workhardening and superplasticity in Zn/0.4% Al Alloy

    Get PDF
Superplasticity*requires, amongst other things, a metal with a grain-size in the range 0.5-5μ. Theories of SP invoking dynamic recovery require that the cell-Size of the substructure for the alloy in question is larger than the SP grain-size, so that gliding dislocations are always annihilated in the grain boundaries and workhardening cannot occur (1,2). .Thus the grain-size is critical, and for a given set of conditions, there must be a grain-size greater than which SP cannot be achieved

Is level of neighbourhood green space associated with physical activity in green space?

    Get PDF
Background There is accumulating evidence that greater availability of green space in a neighbourhood is associated with health benefits for the local population. One mechanism proposed for this association is that green space provides a venue for, and therefore encourages, physical activity. It has also been suggested that socio-economic health inequalities may be narrower in greener areas because of the equalised opportunity for physical activity green spaces provide. However, research exploring associations between the availability of green space and physical activity has produced mixed results. Limits to the assessment of the type and amount of physical activity which occurs specifically in green space may account for these mixed findings. This observational study was therefore concerned with the extent to which green space is a venue for physical activity and whether this could account for narrower socio-economic health inequalities in greener neighbourhoods.

Method Secondary analysis of cross sectional data on 3679 adults (16+) living in urban areas across Scotland matched with a neighbourhood level measure of green space availability. Associations between green space availability and both total physical activity, and activity specifically within green space, were explored using logistic regression models. Interactions between socio-economic position and physical activity were assessed. All models adjusted for age, sex and household income.

Results The availability of green space in a neighbourhood was not associated with total physical activity or that specifically in green space. There was no evidence that income-related inequalities in physical activity within green space were narrower in greener areas of Scotland.

Conclusion Physical activity may not be the main mechanism explaining the association between green space and health in Scotland. The direct effect of perceiving a natural environment on physiological and psychological health may offer an alternative explanation.
</p&gt

Connecting Mathematics and the Applied Science of Energy Conservation

To effectively teach science in the elementary classroom, pre-service K-8 teachers need a basic understanding of the underlying concepts of physics, which demand a strong foundation in mathematics. Unfortunately, the depth of mathematics understanding of prospective elementary teachers has been a growing and serious concern for several decades. To overcome this challenge, a two-pronged attack was used in this study. First. students in mathematics courses were coupled with physical science courses by linking registration to ensure co-requisites were taken. This alone improved passing rates. Secondly, an energy conservation project was introduced in both classes that intimately tied the theoretical mathematics base knowledge to problems in physical science, energy efficiency, and household economics. These connections made the mathematics highly relevant to the students and improved both their theoretical understanding and their grades. Together, the two approaches of tying mathematics to physical science and applying mathematical skills to solving energy efficiency problems have shown to be extremely effective at improving student performance. This five-year study not only exhibited record improvements in student performance, but also can be easily replicated at other institutions experiencing similar challenges in training pre-service elementary school teachers

Flood modelling with hydraTE: 2+1-dimensional smoothed-particle hydrodynamics

We present HydraTE, our own implementation of the smoothed-particle hydrodynamics technique for shallow water that uses the adaptive size of the smoothing kernel as a proxy for the local water depth. We derive the equa- tions of motion for this approach from the Lagrangian before demonstrating that we can model the depth of water in a trough, implement vertical walls, recover the correct acceleration and terminal velocity for water flowing down a slope and obtain a stable hydraulic jump with the correct jump condition. We demonstrate that HydraTE performs well on two of the UK Environ- ment Agency flood modelling benchmark tests. Benchmark EA3 involves flow down an incline into a double dip depression and studies the amount of water that reaches the second dip. Our results are in agreement with those of the other codes that have attempted this test. Benchmark EA6 is a dam break into a horizontal channel containing a building. HydraTE again pro- duces results that are in good agreement with the other methods and the experimetal validation data except where the vertical velocity structure of the flow is expected to be multi-valued, such as the hydralic jump where the precise location is not recovered even though the pre- and post- jump water heights are. We conclude that HydraTE is suitable for a wide range of flood modelling problems as it preforms at least as well as the best available commercial alternatives for the problems we have tested
