Appearance of the canine meninges in subtraction magnetic resonance images
The canine meninges are not visible as discrete structures in noncontrast magnetic resonance (MR) images, and are incompletely visualized in T1âweighted, postgadolinium images, reportedly appearing as short, thin curvilinear segments with minimal enhancement. Subtraction imaging facilitates detection of enhancement of tissues, hence may increase the conspicuity of meninges. The aim of the present study was to describe qualitatively the appearance of canine meninges in subtraction MR images obtained using a dynamic technique. Images were reviewed of 10 consecutive dogs that had dynamic preâ and postgadolinium T1W imaging of the brain that was interpreted as normal, and had normal cerebrospinal fluid. Imageâanatomic correlation was facilitated by dissection and histologic examination of two canine cadavers. Meningeal enhancement was relatively inconspicuous in postgadolinium T1âweighted images, but was clearly visible in subtraction images of all dogs. Enhancement was visible as faint, smallârounded foci compatible with vessels seen end on within the sulci, a series of larger rounded foci compatible with vessels of variable caliber on the dorsal aspect of the cerebral cortex, and a continuous thin zone of moderate enhancement around the brain. Superimposition of colorâencoded subtraction images on pregadolinium T1â and T2âweighted images facilitated localization of the origin of enhancement, which appeared to be predominantly dural, with relatively few leptomeningeal structures visible. Dynamic subtraction MR imaging should be considered for inclusion in clinical brain MR protocols because of the possibility that its use may increase sensitivity for lesions affecting the meninges
Three New Long Period X-ray Pulsars Discovered in the Small Magellanic Cloud
The Small Magellanic Cloud is increasingly an invaluable laboratory for
studying accreting and isolated X-ray pulsars. We add to the class of compact
SMC objects by reporting the discovery of three new long period X-ray pulsars
detected with the {\it Chandra X-ray Observatory}. The pulsars, with periods of
152, 304 and 565 seconds, all show hard X-ray spectra over the range from 0.6 -
7.5 keV. The source positions of the three pulsars are consistent with known
H-alpha emission sources, indicating they are likely to be Be type X-ray binary

Anomalous Microfluidic Phonons Induced by the Interplay of Hydrodynamic Screening and Incompressibility
We investigate the acoustic normal modes ("phonons") of a 1D microfluidic
droplet crystal at the crossover between 2D flow and confined 1D plug flow. The
unusual phonon spectra of the crystal, which arise from long-range hydrodynamic
interactions, change anomalously under confinement. The boundaries induce
weakening and screening of the interactions, but when approaching the 1D limit
we measure a marked increase in the crystal sound velocity, a sign of
interaction strengthening. This non-monotonous behavior of the phonon spectra

Gamma-Ray Bursts are Produced Predominately in the Early Universe
It is known that some observed gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are produced at
cosmological distances and that the GRB production rate may follow the star
formation rate. We model the BATSE-detected intensity distribution of long GRBs
in order to determine their space density distribution and opening angle
distribution. Our main results are: the lower and upper distance limits to the
GRB production are z 0.24 and >10, respectively; the GRB opening angle follows
an exponential distribution and the mean opening angle is about 0.03 radians;
and the peak luminosity appears to be a better standard candle than the total

Gamma-Ray Bursts as a Probe of the Very High Redshift Universe
We show that, if many GRBs are indeed produced by the collapse of massive
stars, GRBs and their afterglows provide a powerful probe of the very high

Very high energy gamma rays from the Crab Nebula
Observations of the Crab pulsar using the atmospheric Cerenkov technique were conducted for 22 hours. The light curve obtained shows a single peak at approximately the position of the expected main peak with a significance level of 3.2 sigma. The pulsed flux above 200 GeV is 2.5 + or - 0.8 x 10 to the 11th power cm(-2)s(-1)
Twist distribution in staple fibre yarns
Staple fibre yarns vary quite markedly in linear density (tex) along their length and the degree to which twist redistributes from thick to thin places will affect the strength, torque and extension behaviour of the yarn. Theory suggests that twist along worsted yarns should vary as 1/(tex)2 if fibres were locked in the structure, whereas themean torque of worsted yarns reported in the literature implies that twist should be proportional to 1/tex. This article examines twist distribution in ring-spun marl yarns, down to 5 mm resolution, as a function of linear density measured using a high-resolution capacitive sensor. It is found for moderate twist-level worsted yarns that twist is approximately proportional to 1/(tex)1.6. The results and theory provide a guide as to the effect the observed large variations in linear density will have on yarn properties such as tenacity and torque.<br /
Previously Claimed(/Unclaimed) X-ray Emission Lines in High Resolution Afterglow Spectra
We review the significance determination for emission lines in the Chandra
HETGS spectrum for GRB020813, and we report on a search for additional lines in
high resolution Chandra spectra. No previously unclaimed features are found. We
also discuss the significance of lines sets reportedly discovered using XMM
data for GRB011211 and GRB030227. We find that these features are likely of

Chandra Observations of the Optically Dark GRB030528
The X-ray-rich GRB030528 was detected by the HETE satellite and its
localization was rapidly disseminated. However, early optical observations
failed to detect a counterpart source. In a 2-epoch ToO observation with
Chandra, we discovered a fading X-ray source likely counterpart to GRB030528.
The source brightness was typical of X-ray afterglows observed at similar
epochs. Other observers detected an IR source at a location consistent with the
X-ray source. The X-ray spectrum is not consistent with a large absorbing
