The last fifteen years of stagnation in Italy: A Business Cycle Accounting Perspective
In this paper, we investigate possible sources of declining economic growth performance in Italy starting around the middle of the ’90s. A long-run data analysis suggests that the poor performance of the Italian economy cannot be ascribed to an unfortunate business cycle contingency. The rest of the euro area countries have shown better performance, and the macroeconomic data show that the Italian economy has not grown as rapidly as these other European economies. We investigate the sources of economic fluctuations in Italy by applying the Business Cycle Accounting procedure introduced by Chari, Kehoe and McGrattan (2007). We analyze the relative importance of efficiency, labor, investment and government wedges for business cycles in Italy over the 1982-2008 period. We find that different wedges have played different roles during the period, but the efficiency wedge is revealed to be the main factor responsible for the stagnation phase beginning around 1995. Our findings also show that the improvement in labor market distortions that occurred in Italy during the ’90s provided an alleviating effect, preventing an even stronger slowdown in per capita output growth.
Decentralized robust control of uncertain Markov jump parameter systems via output feedback
This paper addresses the problem of decentralized robust stabilization and control for a class of uncertain Markov jump parameter systems. Control is via output feedback and knowledge of the discrete Markov state. It is shown that the existence of a solution to a collection of mode-dependent coupled algebraic Riccati equations and inequalities, which depend on certain additional parameters, is both necessary and sufficient for the existence of a robust decentralized switching controller. A guaranteed upper bound on robust performance is also given. To obtain a controller which satisfies this bound, an optimization problem involving rank constrained linear matrix inequalities is introduced, and a numerical approach for solving this problem is presented. To demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach, an example stabilization problem for a power system comprising three generators and one on-load tap changing transformer is considered. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Clinical significance of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in laryngeal carcinoma: Its role in the different subsites
Background: During epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, cancer cells lose adhesion capacity gaining migratory properties. The role of the process on prognosis has been evaluated in 50 cases of laryngeal carcinoma. Methods: E-cadherin, N-cadherin, β-catenin, α-catenin, γ-catenin, caveolin-1, and vimentin immunohistochemical expression were evaluated using a double score based on staining intensity and cellular localization. Results: Cytoplasmic E-cadherin and α/γ catenin staining were associated with a decrease in survival, cytoplasmic β-catenin was associated with advanced stage, and N-cadherin and vimentin expression were associated with poor differentiation and tumor relapse. On the basis of cancer cells, epithelial or mesenchymal morphological and immunophenotypic similarity we identified 4 main subgroups correlated with a transition to a more undifferentiated phenotype, which have a different pattern of relapse and survival. Conclusion: The negative prognostic role of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition has been confirmed and a predictive role in glottic tumors has been suggested, leading us to propose epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition as an additional adverse feature in laryngeal carcinoma
Volume of Mixing Effect on Fluid Counter-Diffusion
The counter-current diffusion-driven mixing process of two miscible fluids is studied in the absence of gravity, assuming that the mixture is non regular, that is its volume is smaller than the sum of the initial volumes of the two components. Two competing effects are present in the mixing region: on one hand, the mass flow rate of each species increases, due to the larger density of the fluid; on the other hand, though, the volumetric flux is retarded by the inward convection due to volume disappearance, which opposes the outward velocity field due to diffusion. This intuition is confirmed by the analytical result of a 1D non-ideal mixing process, showing that, in the presence of the convection induced by a volume decrease, a) the process is self-similar; b) the mass flux of each species at the interface increases by approximately 0.8 e, where e is the maximum relative volume decrease; c) the volume flux of each species decreases by approximately a 0.2 e amount. Photon creation in a spherical oscillating cavity
We study the photon creation inside a perfectly conducting, spherical
oscillating cavity. The electromagnetic field inside the cavity is described by
means of two scalar fields which satisfy Dirichlet and (generalized) Neumann
boundary conditions. As a preliminary step, we analyze the dynamical Casimir
effect for both scalar fields. We then consider the full electromagnetic case.
The conservation of angular momentum of the electromagnetic field is also
discussed, showing that photons inside the cavity are created in singlet

Efeitos De Variações Sazonais E Métodos De Coleta Sobre A Composição Mineral De Própolis De Colmeias De Apis Mellifera Linnaeus
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientĂfico e TecnolĂłgico (CNPq)The effects of seasonal variations and the methods of collection of propolis produced by Africanized honey bees Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758, on the composition of constituent minerals such as magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), and potassium (K) were evaluated. Propolis was harvested from 25 beehives by scraping or by means of propolis collectors (screen, “intelligent” collector propolis [ICP], lateral opening of the super [LOS], and underlay method). During the one-year study, the propolis produced was harvested each month, ground, homogenized, and stored in a freezer at -10 ÂşC. Seasonal analyses of the mineral composition were carried out by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and the results were evaluated by analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey-Kramer’s test to compare the mean values (p<0.05). The results showed that seasonal variations influence the contents of 5 minerals (Mg, Fe, Na, Ca, and Cu), and the propolis harvesting method affects the contents of 4 minerals (Mg, Zn, Fe, and Ca). © 2016, Instituto Internacional de Ecologia.
