    Giant Dipole Resonance Width in near-Sn Nuclei at Low Temperature and High Angular Momentum

    High energy gamma-rays in coincidence with low energy yrast gamma-rays have been measured from 113Sb, at excitation energies of 109 and 122 MeV, formed by bombarding 20Ne on 93Nb at projectile energies of 145 and 160 MeV respectively to study the role of angular momentum (J) and temperature (T) over Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) width. The maximum populated angular momenta for fusion were 67hbar and 73hbar respectively for the above-mentioned beam energies. The high energy photons were detected using a Large Area Modular BaF2 Detector Array (LAMBDA) along with a 24-element multiplicity filter. After pre-equilibrium corrections, the excitation energy E* was averaged over the decay steps of the compound nucleus (CN). The average values of temperature, angular momentum, CN mass etc. have been calculated by the statistical model code CASCADE. Using those average values, results show the systematic increase of GDR width with T which is consistent with Kusnezov parametrization and the Thermal Shape Fluctuation Model. The rise of GDR width with temperature also supports the assumptions of adiabatic coupling in the Thermal Shape Fluctuation Model. But the GDR widths and corresponding reduced plots with J are not consistent with the theoretical model at high spins.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, Submitted to Physics Review

    Patients in a private hospital in India leave the emergency department against medical advice for financial reasons

    BACKGROUND: Some reports indicate financial concerns as a factor affecting ED patients leaving the acute care setting against medical advice (AMA). In India, no person is supposed to be denied urgent care because of inability to pay. Since a large proportion of the Indian health care system is financed by out-of-pocket expenses, we investigate the role of financial constraints for ED patients at a private hospital in India in leaving AMA. METHODS: A prospective ED-based cross-sectional survey of patients leaving AMA was conducted at a private hospital in India from 1 October 2010 to 31 December 2010. Descriptive statistics and the chi-square test were used to identify associations between financial factors and the decision to leave the hospital AMA. RESULTS: Overall, 55 (3.84%) ED patients left AMA, of which 46 (84%) reported leaving because of financial restrictions. Thirty-nine (71%) respondents indicated the medical bill would represent more that 25% of their annual income. Females (19/19) were more likely to leave AMA for financial reasons compared to males (27/36, p = 0.017). Among females who signed out AMA, the decision was never made by the female herself. CONCLUSION: The number of people leaving the ED AMA in a private Indian hospital is relatively high, with most leaving for financial reasons. In most cases, women did not decide to leave the ED AMA for themselves, whereas males did. This survey suggests that steps are needed to ensure that the inability to pay does not prevent emergent care from being provided

    Quantum Discord in a spin-1/2 transverse XY Chain Following a Quench

    We report a study on the zero-temperature quantum discord as a measure of two-spin correlation of a transverse XY spin chain following a quench across a quantum critical point and investigate the behavior of mutual information, classical correlations and hence of discord in the final state as a function of the rate of quenching. We show that though discord vanishes in the limit of very slow as well as very fast quenching, it exhibits a peak for an intermediate value of the quenching rate. We show that though discord and also the mutual information exhibit a similar behavior with respect to the quenching rate to that of concurrence or negativity following an identical quenching, there are quantitative differences. Our studies indicate that like concurrence, discord also exhibits a power law scaling with the rate of quenching in the limit of slow quenching though it may not be expressible in a closed power law form. We also explore the behavior of discord on quenching linearly across a quantum multicritical point (MCP) and observe a scaling similar to that of the defect density.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    Privatization in the presence of foreign competition and strategic policies

    Recent evidence shows that developing and transition economies are increasingly privatizing their public firms and also experiencing rapid growth of inward foreign direct investment (FDI). In an international mixed oligopoly with strategic tax/subsidy policies, we analyze the interaction between privatization and FDI. We find that the incentive for FDI increases with privatization. However, the possibility of FDI reduces the degree of privatization. Our paper shows that FDI policies reducing the fixed-cost of undertaking FDI may need to complement the privatization policies to attract FDI and to improve domestic welfare

    Nuclear level density and thermal properties of 115^{115}Sn from neutron evaporation

    The nuclear level density of 115^{115}Sn has been measured in an excitation energy range of \sim 2 - 9 MeV using the experimental neutron evaporation spectra from the 115^{115}In(p,np,n)115^{115}Sn reaction. The experimental level densities were compared with the microscopic Hartree-Fock BCS (HFBCS), Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov plus combinatorial (HFB+C), and an exact pairing plus independent particle model (EP+IPM) calculations. It is observed that the EP+IPM provides the most accurate description of the experimental data. The thermal properties (entropy and temperature) of 115^{115}Sn have been investigated from the measured level densities. The experimental temperature profile as well as the calculated heat capacity show distinct signatures of a transition from the strongly-paired nucleonic phase to the weakly paired one in this nucleus.Comment: This article has been submitted to European Journal of Physics A for publicatio
