    Spiky strings in AdS_3 x S^1 and their AdS-pp-wave limits

    Full text link
    We study a class of classical solutions for closed strings moving in AdS_3 x S^1 part of AdS_5 x S^5 with energy E and spin S in AdS_3 and angular momentum J and winding m in S^1. They have rigid shape with n spikes in AdS_3. We find that when J or m are non-zero, the spikes do not end in cusps. We consider in detail a special large n limit in which S ~ n^2, J ~ n, i.e. S >> J >> 1, with (E+S)/ n^2, (E-S)/ n, J/n, m/n staying finite. In that limit the spiky spinning string approaches the boundary of AdS_5. We show that the corresponding solution can be interpreted as describing a periodic-spike string moving in AdS_3 --pp-wave x S^1 background. The resulting expression for the string energy should represent a strong-coupling prediction for anomalous dimension of a class of dual gauge theory states in a particular thermodynamic limit of the SL(2) spin chain.Comment: 34 pages, 4 figures; v2: references added; v3: typos correcte

    Generalized scaling function from light-cone gauge AdS_5 x S^5 superstring

    Full text link
    We revisit the computation of the 2-loop correction to the energy of a folded spinning string in AdS_5 with an angular momentum J in S^5 in the scaling limit log S, J >>1 with J / log S fixed. This correction gives the third term in the strong-coupling expansion of the generalized scaling function. The computation, using the AdS light-cone gauge approach developed in our previous paper, is done by expanding the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring partition function near the generalized null cusp world surface associated to the spinning string solution. The result corrects and extends the previous conformal gauge result of arXiv:0712.2479 and is found to be in complete agreement with the corresponding terms in the generalized scaling function as obtained from the asymptotic Bethe ansatz in arXiv:0805.4615 (and also partially from the quantum O(6) model and the Bethe ansatz data in arXiv:0809.4952). This provides a highly nontrivial strong coupling comparison of the Bethe ansatz proposal with the quantum AdS_5 x S^5 superstring theory, which goes beyond the leading semiclassical term effectively controlled by the underlying algebraic curve. The 2-loop computation we perform involves all the structures in the AdS light-cone gauge superstring action of hep-th/0009171 and thus tests its ultraviolet finiteness and, through the agreement with the Bethe ansatz, its quantum integrability. We do most of the computations for a generalized spinning string solution or the corresponding null cusp surface that involves both the orbital momentum and the winding in a large circle of S^5.Comment: 50 pages, late

    Generating AdS String Solutions

    Full text link
    We use a Pohlmeyer type reduction to generate classical string solutions in AdS spacetime. In this framework we describe a correspondence between spikes in AdS_3 and soliton profiles of the sinh-Gordon equation. The null cusp string solution and its closed spinning string counterpart are related to the sinh-Gordon vacuum. We construct classical string solutions corresponding to sinh-Gordon solitons, antisolitons and breathers by the inverse scattering technique. The breather solutions can also be reproduced by the sigma model dressing method.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures, references adde

    Three Spin Spiky Strings in beta-deformed Background

    Full text link
    We study rigidly rotating strings in β\beta-deformed AdS5×S5AdS_5\times S^5 background with one spin along AdS5_5 and two angular momenta along S5S^5. We find the spiky string solutions and present the dispersion relation among various charges in this background. We further generalize the result to the case of four angular momenta along AdS5×Sγ5AdS_5 \times S_{\gamma}^5.Comment: 12 pages, minor corrections, added references, to appear in JHE

    Spiky Strings on I-brane

    Full text link
    We study rigidly rotating strings in the near horizon geometry of the 1+1 dimensional intersection of two orthogonal stacks of NS5-branes, the so called I-brane background. We solve the equations of motion of the fundamental string action in the presence of two form NS-NS fluxes that the I-brane background supports and write down general form of conserved quantities. We further find out two limiting cases corresponding to giant magnon and single spike like strings in various parameter space of solutions.Comment: 17 pages, major restructuring of text, added a referenc

    On the Rotating and Oscillating strings in (AdS3×S3)ϰ(AdS_3\times S^3)_{\varkappa}

    Full text link
    We study rigidly rotating strings in the ϰ\varkappa-deformed AdS3×S3AdS_3 \times S^3 background. We find out two classes of solutions corresponding to the giant magnon and single spike solutions of the string rotating in two Sϰ2S^2_{\varkappa} subspace of rotations reduced along two different isometries. We verify that the dispersion relations reduce to the well known relation in the ϰ→0\varkappa\rightarrow 0 limit. We further study some oscillating string solutions in the Sϰ3S^3_{\varkappa} subspace.Comment: 20 pages, clarifications added, version to appear in JHE

    Generalized cusp in AdS_4 x CP^3 and more one-loop results from semiclassical strings

    We evaluate the exact one-loop partition function for fundamental strings whose world-surface ends on a cusp at the boundary of AdS_4 and has a "jump" in CP^3. This allows us to extract the stringy prediction for the ABJM generalized cusp anomalous dimension Gamma_{cusp}^{ABJM} (phi, theta) up to NLO in sigma-model perturbation theory. With a similar analysis, we present the exact partition functions for folded closed string solutions moving in the AdS_3 parts of AdS_4 x CP^3 and AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x S^1 backgrounds. Results are obtained applying to the string solutions relevant for the AdS_4/CFT_3 and AdS_3/CFT_2 correspondence the tools previously developed for their AdS_5 x S^5 counterparts.Comment: 48 pages, 2 figures, version 3, corrected misprints in formulas 2.12, B.86, C.33, added comment on verification of the light-like limi
