Frogs as bioindicators of chemical usage and farm practices in an irrigated agricultural area
This study investigated the status of four frogs and their tadpole population in rice bays of the Colleambally Irrigation Area, NSW. The aims were to determine whether or not there were links between specific agricultural chemicals used in the two main irrigated crops of the area, rice and corn and the presence/absence of frogs in that area; and to assess the abundance, growth and development of tadpoles in the area in the light of such farm practices
Amphibians and agricultural chemicals : review of the risks in a complex environment
Agricultural landscapes, although often highly altered in nature, provide habitat for many species of amphibian. However, the persistence and health of amphibian populations are likely to be compromised by the escalating use of pesticides and other agricultural chemicals. This review examines some of the issues relating to exposure of amphibian populations to these chemicals and places emphasis on mechanisms of toxicity
Ecotoxicology
This chapter of Expert Evidence is designed to provide background information for lawyers engaged in investigations or hearings related to chemicals and their potential impacts in the environment. The chapter details procedures for measurement, interpretation and prediction of effects with laboratory- and field-based data. A series of case studies relevant to the Australian environment are presented
