    Designing behaviourally informed policies for land stewardship: A new paradigm

    This paper argues the case for a new approach to the stewardship of land resources that uses behavioural science theory to support the design and application of policies that facilitate changes in behaviour by those who develop policy and the farmers who implement it. Current approaches have: focused on legally-based expert system; and have been devised by national and international bureaucracies with little or no knowledge of how land owners and managers are motivated, and how they think, behave and operate as stewards of their natural resources. A review of current approaches from the social scientific literature is provided, with a particular focus on principles from social psychology. This is followed by an examination of how these principles can be applied to influence behaviour related to land restoration and soil conservation. Examples of the problems with traditional approaches and the evolution of new approaches with full engagement of farmers as the delivery agents are provided from within the European Union, Iceland and Scotland. In the light of these examples and emerging thinking in other parts of the world, the paper sets out the basis for a new approach based on behavioural science theory and application, reinforcing the arguments already made in the literature for a social license for farming

    Comparing students' conceptions of technology in a city technology college and a rural comprehensive school

    This paper summarises the findings of a study which captured and compared the conceptions of Technology held by students in a City Technology College and a Rural Comprehensive School. The first section provides a brief overview of the methodology which was adopted. The second section reports the major findings of the comparative study. The two student populations cannot be differentiated by virtue of the range of conceptions which one group holds being distinct from those of the other. However; a comparison is made based on the extent to which students in a school tend towards a common conception. The third section considers the learning environment and curriculum of the city technology college in relation to the TEC-Lab project reported by Householder and Bolin (1993) and questions if this influences students’ awareness of technology

    Mathematics: A good predictor for success in a health science degree

    Research-based literature indicates that secondary school mathematics performance is highly predictive of university performance Moreover, scholars suggest that success in secondary mathematics courses translates into success in tertiary degrees where mathematics is required. This paper examines the extent to which the completion of secondary school mathematics courses is predictive of academic success for 57 first-year students enrolled in a Health Science degree at The University of Notre Dame Australia (UNDA) (Fremantle Campus). Using the University’s databases, the level of mathematics completed at secondary school was examined against gender, Tertiary Entrance Ranking (TER) and Grade Point Average (GPA). A statistical analysis of collected data revealed that irrespective of gender, students who completed 3C3D mathematics at secondary school had a significantly (p = .00) higher GPA, than those students who had studied level 2C2D mathematics. These findings are discussed briefly in light of the current literature presented

    Implicit and explicit host effects on excitons in pentacene derivatives

    An ab initio study of the effects of implicit and explicit hosts on the excited state properties of pentacene and its nitrogen-based derivatives has been performed using ground state density func- tional theory (DFT), time-dependent DFT and ∆SCF. We observe a significant solvatochromic redshift in the excitation energy of the lowest singlet state (S 1 ) of pentacene from inclusion in a p -terphenyl host compared to vacuum; for an explicit host consisting of six nearest neighbour p -terphenyls, we obtain a redshift of 65 meV while a conductor-like polarisable continuum model (CPCM) yields a 78 meV redshift. Comparison is made between the excitonic properties of pen- tacene and four of its nitrogen-based analogues, 1,8-, 2,9-, 5,12-, and 6,13-diazapentacene with the latter found to be the most distinct due to local distortions in the ground state electronic struc- ture. We observe that a CPCM is insufficient to fully understand the impact of the host due to the presence of a mild charge-transfer (CT) coupling between the chromophore and neighbouring p -terphenyls, a phenomenon which can only be captured using an explicit model. The strength of this CT interaction increases as the nitrogens are brought closer to the central acene ring of pentacene

    LOCAL COOPERATIVES' EVALUATION OF BUSINESS INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES

    Agricultural cooperatives have been restructuring, by way of mergers, acquisitions, joint-ventures, and strategic alliances, to increase efficiencies to remain competitive in a changing business environment. The research evaluating the reorganization of cooperatives has revealed that less than one-half of the restructured businesses are financially successful. There is the potential to significantly influence the future health of the cooperative business sector if, first, insights can be gained concerning the factors being considered by cooperative managers when making restructuring decisions and, second, extension education programs can be adapted to meet the greatest need.
