    Error correction method and apparatus for electronic timepieces

    A method and apparatus for correcting errors in an electronic digital timepiece that includes an oscillator which has a 2 in. frequency output, an n-stage frequency divider for reducing the oscillator output frequency to a time keeping frequency, and means for displaying the count of the time keeping frequency. In first and second embodiments of the invention the timepiece is synchronized with a time standard at the beginning of the period of time T. In the first embodiment of the invention the timepiece user observes E (the difference between the time standard and the timepiece time at the end of the period T) and then operates a switch to correct the time of the timepiece and to obtain a count for E. In the second embodiment of the invention, the user operates a switch at the beginning of T and at the end of T and a count for E is obtained electronically

    Women as moral pioneers? Experiences of first trimester antenatal screening

This is particularly so in the area of antenatal screening, which is dominated by the language of risk and probabilities. Second trimester serum screening for Down's syndrome and neural tube defects has a well-established place in antenatal care. Increasingly, first trimester screening with biochemical and ultrasound markers is being proposed as advance on this, yielding higher detection rates of Down's syndrome at an earlier gestational age. This article explores the experiences of 14 women offered innovative first trimester screening, which takes place within the context of a detailed ultrasound scan. The study is set within the UK, where recent policy changes mean that the offer of screening for fetal anomalies, particularly Down's syndrome, will become a routine part of antenatal care and offered to all pregnant women. This paper focuses on the significance of the scan in first trimester screening, and some of the potential dilemmas for women that can result from this. It then discusses the ways in which women made their decisions about screening, in particular, their work as ‘moral pioneers’. We found that the part played by the ultrasound scan in first trimester screening, particularly in relation to the higher-quality images now being obtained, has the potential to introduce new and novel ethical dilemmas for pregnant women. Although concerns have been raised about pregnant women viewing ultrasound scans as benign, many of the women reported having thought carefully through their own moral beliefs and values prior to screening. It seems that whatever other implications they may have, first trimester screening technologies will continue the tradition of pregnant women acting as ‘moral pioneers’ in increasingly complex settings.ESRC/MRC Innovative Health Technologies Programme for funding the project (grant no: L218252042).     Mid-IR Excitation of Graphene

    In this research we investigate how the conductivity of graphene changes in response to mid-infrared photoexcitation. Our p-type sample was formed through chemical vapor deposition. Pump/probe methodology produced the time-resolved Terahertz transmission, from which the photoconductivity was calculated. We probed the sample with energies above and below the Fermi energy, which was determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Our results support a model in which heating of the electron gas, leading to high carrier scattering rates, is responsible for a decrease in conductivity. We observe this negative photoconductivity at all pump energies, allowing us to rule out the possibility of population inversion to explain the results

    Screening for health risks: A social science perspective

    Health screening promises to reduce risks to individuals via probabilistic sifting of populations for medical conditions. The categorisation and selection of 'conditions' such as cardiovascular events, dementia and depression for screening itself requires prior interpretive labour which usually remains unexamined. Screening systems can take diverse organisational forms and varying relationships to health status, as when purported disease precursors, for example 'pre-cancerous' polyps, or supposed risk factors, such as high cholesterol themselves, become targets for screening. Screening at best yields small, although not necessarily unworthwhile, net population health gains. It also creates new risks, leaving some individuals worse-off than if they had been left alone. The difficulties associated with attempting to measure small net gains through randomised controlled trials are sometimes underestimated. Despite endemic doubts about its clinical utility, bibliometric analysis of published papers shows that responses to health risks are coming to be increasingly thought about in terms of screening. This shift is superimposed on a strengthening tendency to view health through the lens of risk. It merits further scrutiny as a societal phenomenon

    A device and method was developed to rapidly quantify the relative distention of the bladder of a human subject. An ultrasonic transducer is positioned on the human subject near the bladder. A microprocessor controlled pulser excites the transducer by sending an acoustic wave into the human subject. This wave interacts with the bladder walls and is reflected back to the ultrasonic transducer where it is received, amplified, and processed by the receiver. The resulting signal is digitized by an analog to digital converter, controlled by the microprocessor again, and is stored in data memory. The software in the microprocessor determines the relative distention of the bladder as a function of the propagated ultrasonic energy. Based on programmed scientific measurements and the human subject's past history as contained in program memory, the microprocessor sends out a signal to turn on any or all of the available alarms. The alarm system includes and audible alarm, the visible alarm, the tactile alarm, and the remote wireless alarm

    Prospective randomized study evaluating an absorbable cyanoacrylate for use in vascular reconstructions

    BackgroundAn easy-to-use vascular sealant with good safety and efficacy is needed to prevent anastomotic bleeding in vascular surgery. This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of cyanoacrylate surgical sealant in establishing hemostasis of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene to arterial vascular anastomoses in arteriovenous (AV) grafts and femoral bypass grafts.MethodsThis multicenter, randomized, controlled, open-label study was conducted in a hospital setting at 12 sites: 10 in the United States and 2 in Europe. A total of 151 patients undergoing femoral bypass procedures or AV shunt procedures for hemodialysis access using expanded polytetrafluoroethylene grafts were randomized 2:1 to receive cyanoacrylate surgical sealant or the control (oxidized cellulose) between April 26, 2004, and January 18, 2005. Randomization was stratified by clinical site and type of procedure. After the anastomosis, cyanoacrylate surgical sealant or the control was applied to all anastomosis sites for patients undergoing femoral bypass procedures and to only the arterial anastomosis sites for patients undergoing AV shunt procedures. The primary end point was the elapsed time from clamp release to hemostasis. Secondary end points were the proportion of patients achieving hemostasis at t = 0 (immediate), 1, 5, or 10 minutes after clamp release, use of additional adjunctive measures to achieve hemostasis, and occurrence of adverse events.ResultsBaseline demographics and clinical characteristics showed that the two treatment groups were similar at baseline. The mean time from clamp release to hemostasis was 119.3 seconds with cyanoacrylate surgical sealant vs 403.8 seconds with the control (P < .001). Immediate hemostasis was achieved in 54.5% of patients receiving cyanoacrylate surgical sealant and in 10% of those receiving the control. The proportion of patients requiring additional adjunctive measures was lower with cyanoacrylate surgical sealant, and the occurrence of adverse events was similar in both groups.ConclusionsThis study demonstrates that cyanoacrylate surgical sealant is effective at reducing the time to hemostasis and achieving immediate hemostasis in AV shunt and femoral bypass procedures and that it is safe for internal use. Cyanoacrylate surgical sealant is an easy-to-use vascular sealant with good safety and efficacy that significantly decreases anastomotic bleeding in vascular surgery

    Examining the health and well-being experiences of singers in popular music

    This study investigated the health and well-being experiences of professional singers in popular music. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of semi-structured interviews with five professional singers identified three main themes: (1) mental and physical experiences of health and support, (2) positive musical experiences and (3) barriers to health and well-being. Participants perceived health as important to their careers and viewed it as both physical and mental in nature. The singers relied on family and industry peers for support, whilst experiencing mental health challenges and physical health problems in the context of an emotionally intense landscape. Positive musical experiences involved the self-expression of songwriting, live music performance and relationships with fans, and barriers to health and well-being included touring, commercial challenges and a perceived lack of support. The findings suggest a need for increased awareness and understanding of the challenges faced by singers in popular music
