    On equiangular lines in 17 dimensions and the characteristic polynomial of a Seidel matrix

    For ee a positive integer, we find restrictions modulo 2e2^e on the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial χS(x)\chi_S(x) of a Seidel matrix SS. We show that, for a Seidel matrix of order nn even (resp. odd), there are at most 2(e−22)2^{\binom{e-2}{2}} (resp. 2(e−22)+12^{\binom{e-2}{2}+1}) possibilities for the congruence class of χS(x)\chi_S(x) modulo 2eZ[x]2^e\mathbb Z[x]. As an application of these results, we obtain an improvement to the upper bound for the number of equiangular lines in R17\mathbb R^{17}, that is, we reduce the known upper bound from 5050 to 4949.Comment: 21 pages, fixed typo in Lemma 2.

    Another construction of edge-regular graphs with regular cliques

    We exhibit a new construction of edge-regular graphs with regular cliques that are not strongly regular. The infinite family of graphs resulting from this construction includes an edge-regular graph with parameters (24,8,2)(24,8,2). We also show that edge-regular graphs with 11-regular cliques that are not strongly regular must have at least 2424 vertices.Comment: 7 page

    We performed real-time myocardial contrast echocardiography on a patient with cardiac amyloidosis and previous normal coronary angiography presenting with atypical chest pain to assess myocardial blood flow reserve (MBFR). Myocardial contrast echocardiography was performed and flash microbubble destruction and replenishment analysis was used to calculate myocardial blood flow. Dipyridamole was used to achieve hyperemia. MBFR was derived from the ratio of peak myocardial blood flow at hyperemia and rest. The results show a marked reduction in MBFR in our patient. Previous reports of luminal obstruction of intramyocardial rather than epicardial vessels by amyloid deposition may be causing microvascular dysfunction

    A PROSPECTIVE INVESTIGATION OF JOY AND TRAIT GRATITUDE

    This prospective study examined the relationship between trait gratitude and future joy. The purpose was to determine if trait gratitude could predict future joy. Previously, studies have not examined the specific relationship between these two emotions, but there is good reason to believe that joy is a distinct positive emotion, and gratitude may be foundational for the experience of joy. The study was done with university students taking the GRAT, GQ-6, and measures of joy at two time points, seven to nine weeks apart. Data were analyzed from 149 participants recruited from psychology classes. Participants with higher trait gratitude at Time 1, as determined by the GRAT, tended to have more joy at Time 2. However, when measuring trait gratitude with the GQ-6, this trend did not reach significance. As an exploratory analysis, I analyzed the relationship between Time 1 trait joy and Time 2 state gratitude and found a similar relationship. These findings not only support that trait gratitude may be foundational for joy over time, but also suggest joy and gratitude can support each other in an upward spiral.     Absence of magnetic long range order in Y2_{2}CrSbO7_{7}: bond-disorder induced magnetic frustration in a ferromagnetic pyrochlore

    The consequences of nonmagnetic-ion dilution for the pyrochlore family Y2_{2}(M1−xNxM_{1-x}N_{x})2_{2}O7_{7} (MM = magnetic ion, NN = nonmagnetic ion) have been investigated. As a first step, we experimentally examine the magnetic properties of Y2_{2}CrSbO7_{7} (xx = 0.5), in which the magnetic sites (Cr3+^{3+}) are percolative. Although the effective Cr-Cr spin exchange is ferromagnetic, as evidenced by a positive Curie-Weiss temperature, ΘCW\Theta_\mathrm{{CW}} = 20.1(6) K, our high-resolution neutron powder diffraction measurements detect no sign of magnetic long range order down to 2 K. In order to understand our observations, we performed numerical simulations to study the bond-disorder introduced by the ionic size mismatch between MM and NN. Based on these simulations, bond-disorder (xbx_{b} ≃\simeq 0.23) percolates well ahead of site-disorder (xsx_{s} ≃\simeq 0.61). This model successfully reproduces the critical region (0.2 < xx < 0.25) for the N\'eel to spin glass phase transition in Zn(Cr1−x_{1-x}Gax_{x})2_{2}O4_{4}, where the Cr/Ga-sublattice forms the same corner-sharing tetrahedral network as the M/NM/N-sublattice in Y2_{2}(M1−xNxM_{1-x}N_{x})2_{2}O7_{7}, and the rapid drop in magnetically ordered moment in the N\'eel phase [Lee etet alal, Phys. Rev. B 77, 014405 (2008)]. Our study stresses the nonnegligible role of bond-disorder on magnetic frustration, even in ferromagnets
