Apparatus for endoscopic examination
An endoscope is having a propulsion mechanism and at least one transmitter at the distal end transmitting bursts of energy waves (radio frequency or ultrasonic) for tracking the position of the distal end through the use of two or more transducers on the anterior or lateral surfaces of a patient is described. The propulsion mechanism which consists of two radially expandable bladders separated by an axially expandable bellows with only the forward bladder attached to the distal end is discussed. Alternate mechanisms are reported. A sheath on the endoscope which includes material having a sharp melting point slightly above body temperature so that the sheath is made flexible at selected sections by applying current to separate heating wires in the sections of the sheath is described

Coupling apparatus for ultrasonic medical diagnostic system
An apparatus for the ultrasonic scanning of a breast or other tissue is reported that contains a cavity for receiving the breast, a vacuum for drawing the breast into intimate contact with the walls of the cavity, and transducers coupled through a fluid to the cavity to transmit sound waves through the breast. Each transducer lies at the end of a tapered chamber which has flexible walls and which is filled with fluid, so that the transducer can be moved in a raster pattern while the chamber walls flex accordingly, with sound transmission always occurring through the fluid
Constant magnification optical tracking system
A constant magnification optical tracking system for continuously tracking of a moving object is described. In the tracking system, a traveling objective lens maintains a fixed relationship with an object to be optically tracked. The objective lens was chosen to provide a collimated light beam oriented in the direction of travel of the moving object. A reflective surface is attached to the traveling objective lens for reflecting an image of the moving object. The object to be tracked is a free-falling object which is located at the focal point of the objective lens for at least a portion of its free-fall path. A motor and control means is provided for mantaining the traveling objective lens in a fixed relationship relative to the free-falling object, thereby keeping the free-falling object at the focal point and centered on the axis of the traveling objective lens throughout its entire free-fall path
Strong thin membrane structure
A continuous process is described for producing strong lightweight structures for use as solar sails for spacecraft propulsion by radiation pressure. A thin reflective coating, such as aluminum, is applied to a rotating cylinder. A nylon mesh, applied over the aluminum coating, is then coated with a polymerizing material such as a para-xylylene monomer gas to polymerize as a film bound to the mesh and the aluminum. An emissivity increasing material such as chromium or silicon monoxide is applied to the polymer film to disperse such material colloidally into the growing polymer film, or to the final polymer film. The resulting membrane structure is then removed from the cylinder. Alternately, the membrane structure can be formed by etching a substrate in the form of an organic film such as a polymide, or a metal foil, to remove material from the substrate and reduce its thickness. A thin reflective coating (aluminum) is applied on one side of the substrate, and an emissivity increasing coating is applied on the reverse side of the substrate
Stability of multifield cosmological solutions in the presence of a fluid
We explore the stability properties of multifield solutions in the presence of a perfect fluid, as appropriate to assisted quintessence scenarios. We show that the stability condition for multiple fields phi(i) in identical potentials V-i is simply d(2)V(i)/d phi(2)(i) > 0, exactly as in the absence of a fluid. A possible new instability associated with the fluid is shown not to arise in situations of cosmological interest
Flood modelling with hydraTE: 2+1-dimensional smoothed-particle hydrodynamics
We present HydraTE, our own implementation of the smoothed-particle hydrodynamics technique for shallow water that uses the adaptive size of the smoothing kernel as a proxy for the local water depth. We derive the equa- tions of motion for this approach from the Lagrangian before demonstrating that we can model the depth of water in a trough, implement vertical walls, recover the correct acceleration and terminal velocity for water flowing down a slope and obtain a stable hydraulic jump with the correct jump condition. We demonstrate that HydraTE performs well on two of the UK Environ- ment Agency flood modelling benchmark tests. Benchmark EA3 involves flow down an incline into a double dip depression and studies the amount of water that reaches the second dip. Our results are in agreement with those of the other codes that have attempted this test. Benchmark EA6 is a dam break into a horizontal channel containing a building. HydraTE again pro- duces results that are in good agreement with the other methods and the experimetal validation data except where the vertical velocity structure of the flow is expected to be multi-valued, such as the hydralic jump where the precise location is not recovered even though the pre- and post- jump water heights are. We conclude that HydraTE is suitable for a wide range of flood modelling problems as it preforms at least as well as the best available commercial alternatives for the problems we have tested
Multifield consequences for D-brane inflation
We analyse the multifield behaviour in D-brane inflation when contributions from the bulk are taken into account. For this purpose, we study a large number of realisations of the potential; we find the nature of the inflationary trajectory to be very consistent despite the complex construction. Inflation is always canonical and occurs in the vicinity of an inflection point. Extending the transport method to non-slow-roll and to calculate the running, we obtain distributions for observables. The spectral index is typically blue and the running positive, putting the model under moderate pressure from WMAP7 constraints. The local f_NL and tensor-to-scalar ratio are typically unobservably small, though we find approximately 0.5% of realisations to give observably large local f_NL. Approximating the potential as sum-separable, we are able to give fully analytic explanations for the trends in observed behaviour. Finally we find the model suffers from the persistence of isocurvature perturbations, which can be expected to cause further evolution of adiabatic perturbations after inflation. We argue this is a typical problem for models of multifield inflation involving inflection points and renders models of this type technically unpredictive without a description of reheating
