    Interest Based Bargaining and the Japanese Management Style: Two Models for Cooperation in the Workplace

    Dealing with conflict between workers and managers is an ongoing concern for management specialists. Models have been introduced to help manage the conflict in the workplace. Two are examined in this thesis; Interest Based Bargaining and the Japanese Management Style. Both models seek to lessen the conflict in the workplace by utilizing problem solving tools and communication tools that will provide a balance of the control that governs the work process. Both models will find success difficult because the tendency of American managers is to resist empowering workers because they fear that empowering workers will result in decreased productivity that will effect the bottom line. Therefore, even though both models have the elements needed to be successful, complete implementation of either model is unlikely in the American workplace

    Measuring Fiscal Effects Based on Changes in Deepwater Off-Shore Drilling Activities

    This paper accomplishes two objectives. First, this paper estimates a model for oil wells drilled in the Gulf of Mexico using specific time series models. In the second objective, the number of wells drilled are applied to the COMPAS model for Louisiana. Wells drilled are treated as final demand in an input-output model framework to estimate exogenous changes in employment demand. This demand is then applied to a block recursive labor force module that measures changes in key labor market variables. These variables then serve as exogenous variables in revenue capacity equations. These revenue capacity variables are finally applied to local government expenditure demand equations.     An Analytical Method For Quantifying The Electrical Space Heating Component Of A Cold Load Pick Up

    After an extended cold weather outage on a distribution circuit supplying a high saturation of electrical space heating, large transient overcurrent\u27s persist for several hours because of the undiversified heating load. In this paper, the electrical space heating component of enduring demand is characterized by a smooth curve. Expressions are derived for the parameters of the curve in terms of the outage conditions and a statistical description of the residences. A method is suggested for using this characterization to determine the effects of a cold load pick up on the distribution circuit components.     System for the measurement of ultra-low stray light levels

    An apparatus is described for measuring the effectiveness of stray light suppression light shields and baffle arrangements used in optical space experiments and large space telescopes. The light shield and baffle arrangement and a telescope model are contained in a vacuum chamber. A source of short, high-powered light energy illuminates portions of the light shield and baffle arrangement and reflects a portion of same to a photomultiplier tube by virtue of multipath scattering. The resulting signal is transferred to time-channel electronics timed by the firing of the high energy light source allowing time discrimination of the signal thereby enabling the light scattered and suppressed by the model to be distinguished from the walls and holders around the apparatus

    Magnetization of rotating ferrofluids: the effect of polydispersity

    The influence of polydispersity on the magnetization is analyzed in a nonequilibrium situation where a cylindrical ferrofluid column is enforced to rotate with constant frequency like a rigid body in a homogeneous magnetic field that is applied perpendicular to the cylinder axis. Then, the magnetization and the internal magnetic field are not longer parallel to each other and their directions differ from that of the applied magnetic field. Experimental results on the transverse magnetization component perpendicular to the applied field are compared and analyzed as functions of rotation frequency and field strength with different polydisperse Debye models that take into account the polydispersity in different ways and to a varying degree.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, to be published in Journal of Physics

    Aging is becoming a critical heath care issue and a burgeoning economic burden on society. Mechanotransduction is the ability of the cell to sense, process, and respond to mechanical stimuli and is an important regulator of physiologic function that has been found to play a role in regulating gene expression, protein synthesis, cell differentiation, tissue growth, and most recently, the pathophysiology of disease. Here we will review some of the recent findings of this field and attempt, where possible, to present changes in mechanotransduction that are associated with the aging process in several selected physiological systems, including musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, neuronal, respiratory systems and skin

    Eigenstate–Specific Temperatures in Two–Level Paramagnetic Spin Lattices

    Increasing interest in the thermodynamics of small and/or isolated systems, in combination with recent observations of negative temperatures of atoms in ultracold optical lattices, has stimulated the need for estimating the conventional, canonical temperature Tconvc of systems in equilibrium with heat baths using eigenstate-specific temperatures (ESTs). Four distinct ESTs—continuous canonical, discrete canonical, continuous microcanonical, and discrete microcanonical—are accordingly derived for two-level paramagnetic spin lattices (PSLs) in external magnetic fields. At large N, the four ESTs are intensive, equal to Tconvc, and obey all four laws of thermodynamics. In contrast, for N \u3c 1000, the ESTs of most PSL eigenstates are non-intensive, differ from Tconvc, and violate each of the thermodynamic laws. Hence, in spite of their similarities to Tconvc at large N, the ESTs are not true thermodynamic temperatures. Even so, each of the ESTs manifests a unique functional dependence on energy which clearly specifies the magnitude and direction of their deviation from Tconvc; the ESTs are thus good temperature estimators for small PSLs. The thermodynamic uncertainty relation is obeyed only by the ESTs of small canonical PSLs; it is violated by large canonical PSLs and by microcanonical PSLs of any size. The ESTs of population-inverted eigenstates are negative (positive) when calculated using Boltzmann (Gibbs) entropies; the thermodynamic implications of these entropically induced differences in sign are discussed in light of adiabatic invariance of the entropies. Potential applications of the four ESTs to nanothermometers and to systems with long-range interactions are discussed

    Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the United States. Aging is a primary risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease as well as cardiovascular-related morbidity and mortality. Aging is a universal process that all humans undergo; however, research in aging is limited by cost and time constraints. Therefore, most research in aging has been done in primates and rodents; however it is unknown how well the effects of aging in rat models translate into humans. To compound the complication of aging gender has also been indicated as a risk factor for various cardiovascular diseases. This review addresses the systemic pathophysiology of the cardiovascular system associated with aging and gender for aging research with regard to the applicability of rat derived data for translational application to human aging
