Development of anion-selective membranes
Methods were studied of preparing anion-exchange membranes that would have low resistance, high selectivity, and physical and chemical stability when used in acidic media in a redox energy storage system. Of the twelve systems selected for study, only the system that was based on crosslinked poly-4-vinylpyridinium chloride produced physically strong membranes when equilibrated in l M HCl. The resistivity of the best membrane was 12 ohm-cm, and the transference number for chloride ions was 0.81

Coatings of high thermal and chemical stability for application to metal, glass, ceramics, and other surfaces are formed by reacting diphenyldichlorosilane in the presence of triethylamine with a nitrogen base selected from the group consisting of ammonia and methylamine. The pl polymeric, noncrystalline reaction product is heated in a reaction zone open to the atmosphere at a temperature ranging from approximately 250 C to 450 C until the infusible polymer is formed
Southern Arizona riparian habitat: Spatial distribution and analysis
The objectives of this study were centered around the demonstration of remote sensing as an inventory tool and researching the multiple uses of riparian vegetation. Specific study objectives were to: (1) map riparian vegetation along the Gila River, San Simon Creek, San Pedro River, Pantano Wash, (2) determine the feasibility of automated mapping using LANDSAT-1 computer compatible tapes, (3) locate and summarize existing mpas delineating riparian vegetation, (4) summarize data relevant to Southern Arizona's riparian products and uses, (5) document recent riparian vegetation changes along a selected portion of the San Pedro River, (6) summarize historical changes in composition and distribution of riparian vegetation, and (7) summarize sources of available photography pertinent to Southern Arizona
Conceptual design study of a Harrier V/STOL research aircraft
MCAIR recently completed a conceptual design study to define modification approaches to, and derive planning prices for the conversion of a two place Harrier to a V/STOL control, display and guidance research aircraft. Control concepts such as rate damping, attitude stabilization, velocity command, and cockpit controllers are to be demonstrated. Display formats will also be investigated, and landing, navigation and guidance systems flight tested. The rear cockpit is modified such that it can be quickly adapted to faithfully simulate the controls, displays and handling qualities of a Type A or Type B V/STOL. The safety pilot always has take command capability. The modifications studied fall into two categories: basic modifications and optional modifications. Technical descriptions of the basic modifications and of the optional modifications are presented. The modification plan and schedule as well as the test plan and schedule are presented. The failure mode and effects analysis, aircraft performance, aircraft weight, and aircraft support are discussed
Conditional Mass Functions and Merger Rates of Dark Matter Halos in the Ellipsoidal Collapse Model
Analytic models based on spherical and ellipsoidal gravitational collapse
have been used to derive the mass functions of dark matter halos and their
progenitors (the conditional mass function). The ellipsoidal model generally
provides a better match to simulation results, but there has been no simple
analytic expression in this model for the conditional mass function that is
accurate for small time steps, a limit that is important for generating halo
merger trees and computing halo merger rates. We remedy the situation by
deriving accurate analytic formulae for the first-crossing distribution, the
conditional mass function, and the halo merger rate in the ellipsoidal collapse
model in the limit of small look-back times. We show that our formulae provide
a closer match to the Millennium simulation results than those in the spherical
collapse model and the ellipsoidal model of Sheth & Tormen (2002).Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted by MNRAS letter
Adverse childhood experiences and depressive symptoms in later life: Longitudinal mediation effects of inflammation
Background:
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been associated with both inflammation and depression. However, few studies have examined the role of inflammation as a possible biological mechanism underlying the association of ACEs with depression in later life using longitudinal data. This study investigated the longitudinal mediation effects of inflammation in the relationship between ACEs and depressive symptoms in older adults. /
Methods:
We utilised data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (N = 4382). ACEs (i.e. threat, family dysfunction, low parental bonding, loss experiences) were assessed retrospectively at wave 3 (2006/07). C-reactive protein (CRP), an inflammatory marker, was measured at waves 2 (2004/05), 4 (2008/09), and 6 (2012/13). Depressive symptoms were ascertained from wave 6 to 8 (2016/17). The mediation analysis was conducted using parallel process latent growth curve modelling. /
Results:
Greater ACEs cumulative exposure was associated with higher CRP and depressive symptoms at baseline (βCRPi = 0.066[0.030–0.102]; βDEPi = 0.149[0.115–0.183]) and with their increase over time (βCRPs = 0.205[0.095–0.315]; βDEPs = 0.355[0.184–0.526]). Baseline CRP levels were positively associated with baseline depressive symptoms (βDEPi = 0.145[0.104–0.186]) and their trajectory (βDEPs = 0.215[0.124–0.306]). The mediation analysis indicated that higher baseline CRP levels mediated respectively 7% and 5% of the total effect of ACEs cumulative exposure on the baseline value and change in depressive symptoms. These mediation effects were larger for Loss experiences (i.e. 20% and 12% respectively) than for other types of ACEs. In addition, they were independent of possible confounders and additional mediators including adult socioeconomic position and lifestyle factors. /
Conclusion:
ACEs were related to higher depressive symptoms partly via elevated CRP levels. Inflammation might be one of the psychobiological mechanisms underlying the link between ACEs and depression. Psychosocial and behavioural interventions to prevent and reduce the negative impact of ACEs might help to lower the risk of inflammation and depression in the population
The Effects of the Peak-Peak Correlation on the Peak Model of Hierarchical Clustering
In two previous papers a semi-analytical model was presented for the
hierarchical clustering of halos via gravitational instability from peaks in a
random Gaussian field of density fluctuations. This model is better founded
than the extended Press-Schechter model, which is known to agree with numerical
simulations and to make similar predictions. The specific merger rate, however,
shows a significant departure at intermediate captured masses. The origin of
this was suspected as being the rather crude approximation used for the density
of nested peaks. Here, we seek to verify this suspicion by implementing a more
accurate expression for the latter quantity which accounts for the correlation
among peaks. We confirm that the inclusion of the peak-peak correlation
improves the specific merger rate, while the good behavior of the remaining

The Clustering of Massive Halos
The clustering properties of dark matter halos are a firm prediction of
modern theories of structure formation. We use two large volume,
high-resolution N-body simulations to study how the correlation function of
massive dark matter halos depends upon their mass and formation history. We
find that halos with the lowest concentrations are presently more clustered
than those of higher concentration, the size of the effect increasing with halo
mass; this agrees with trends found in studies of lower mass halos. The
clustering dependence on other characterizations of the full mass accretion
history appears weaker than the effect with concentration. Using the integrated
correlation function, marked correlation functions, and a power-law fit to the
correlation function, we find evidence that halos which have recently undergone
a major merger or a large mass gain have slightly enhanced clustering relative

Non-linear power spectra of dark and luminous matter in halo model of structure formation
The late stages of large-scale structure evolution are treated
semi-analytically within the framework of modified halo model. We suggest
simple yet accurate approximation for relating the non-linear amplitude to
linear one for spherical density perturbation. For halo concentration
parameter, , a new computation technique is proposed, which eliminates the
need of interim evaluation of the . Validity of the technique is
proved for CDM and WDM cosmologies. Also, the parameters for
Sheth-Tormen mass function are estimated. The modified and extended halo model
is applied for determination of non-linear power spectrum of dark matter, as
well as for galaxy power spectrum estimation. The semi-analytical techniques
for dark matter power spectrum are verified by comparison with data from
numerical simulations. Also, the predictions for the galaxy power spectra are
confronted with 'observed' data from PSCz and SDSS galaxy catalogs, good
