The water mites (Acari: Hydrachnidia) of the standing waters of Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily: review and new data
A compilation of our present knowledge of the water mites (Acari: Hydrachnidia) adapted to life in standing waters on the
three large islands in the western Mediterranean (Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily) is provided. In addition to published data,
this study deals with a rich volume of new material from recent field work, mostly deriving from intermittent ponds and
pools, an extremely poorly investigated yet peculiar habitat type in the Mediterranean area. Species richness of water mites
reported for the standing waters of the three islands amounts to 91 species. Out of the 47 species for which we present new
distributional data, Hydrachna incisa Halbert, 1903, Hydrachna leegei Koenike, 1895, Piersigia limophila Protz, 1896,
Hydryphantes crassipalpis Koenike, 1914 and Piona laminata (Thor, 1900) have not been recorded previously from the
Mediterranean area. Most of these species were believed to have typical North European distributions. In addition to these,
a further 13 species are recorded for the first time from the area covered. In total, 11 species are new for Italy, seven more are
new for Sicily, three for Sardinia and seven for Corsica. Redescriptions are given of Axonopsis complanata (Müller, 1776)
(A. graeca, nov. syn), Brachypoda baderi (reported for the first time after the original description from Abruzzo, Italy,
synonymization with B. mutila rejected) and B. mutila (recorded for the first time outside Algeria with certainty). For each
species, information is given on habitat preference and geographical distribution; the significance of the data is discussed
under perspectives of zoogeography and nature protection. The completeness of our knowledge for the three investigated
island is assessed using rarefaction curves and non-parametric estimators of species richness; while Sicily can be considered
fairly well known, Corsica and Sardinia require further sampling to assess their water mite diversity
ALS in Italian professional soccer players: the risk is still present and could be soccer-specific
We previously found an increased risk for ALS in Italian professional soccer players actively engaged between 1970 and 2001 (n=7325). The present study extends previous work with a prospective follow-up of the original cohort to 2006 and investigates the risk of ALS in two other cohorts of professional athletes, basketball players (n=1973) and road cyclists (n=1701). Standardized morbidity ratios (SMRs) were calculated. Among soccer players three new cases of ALS were identified, reaching a total of eight ALS cases (mean age of onset, 41.6 years). The number of expected cases was 1.24, with an SMR of 6.45 (95% CI 2.78-12.70; p5 years, for midfielders, and for players engaged after 1980. No basketball player and no cyclist developed ALS. This prospective extension of the Italian soccer players cohort survey confirms the highly significant risk of developing ALS, the young age of onset, the dose-effect risk and a predilection for midfielders. Experimental and numerical analysis of supersonic blade profiles developed for highly loaded impulse type steam turbine stages
The paper describes the results of a numerical and experimental research program addressing the aerodynamic investigation on the performance of blade profiles specifically developed for application in highly loaded impulse type turbine stages. The industrial requirements driving toward the adoption of highly loaded stage solutions are presented, along with an estimation of the profiles operating parameters. Two stator vanes and one rotor blade profile have been developed and extensively tested by means of flow field measurements and schlieren visualization in a transonic blow-down wind tunnel for linear cascades. Experimental results for the relevant operating conditions are presented, providing validation data for the CFD model used for blade design and evidencing that the main goals of the design optimization procedure have been achieved
Experimental Observation of Non-Ideal Nozzle Flow of Siloxane Vapor MDM
The first experimental results from the Test-Rig for Organic Vapors (TROVA) at Politecnico di Milano are reported. The facility implements an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) where the expansion process takes place within a straight axis convergent-divergent nozzle, which is the simplest geometry representative of an ORC turbine blade passage. In order to reduce the required input thermal power, a batch operating mode was selected for the plant. Experimental runs with air allowed to verify the throttling valve operation and the measurement techniques, which include total pressure and temperature measurements in the settling chamber, static pressure measurements along the nozzle axis. A double-passage Schlieren technique is used to visualize the flow field in the nozzle throat and divergent section and to determine the position of shock waves within the flow field. The first experimental observation of non-ideal nozzle flows are presented for the expansion of siloxane fluid MDM (C8H24O2Si3, octamethyltrisiloxane) for vapor expansion in the close proximity of the liquid-vapor saturation curve, at relatively low pressure of operation. A supersonic flow is attained within the divergent section of the nozzle, as demonstrated by the observation of an oblique shock wave at the throat section, where a 0.1 mm recessed step is located. Schlieren visualizations are limited by the occurrence of condensation along the mirror side of the nozzle. Pressure measurements are compatible with the observed flow field
Cytosolic Prion Protein (PrP) Is Not Toxic in N2a Cells and Primary Neurons Expressing Pathogenic PrP Mutations
Inherited prion diseases are linked to mutations in the prion protein (PrP) gene, which favor conversion of PrP into a conformationally altered, pathogenic isoform. The cellular mechanism by which this process causes neurological dysfunction is unknown. It has been proposed that neuronal death can be triggered by accumulation of PrP in the cytosol because of impairment of proteasomal degradation of misfolded PrP molecules retrotranslocated from the endoplasmic reticulum (Ma, J., Wollmann, R., and Lindquist, S. (2002) Science 298, 1781-1785). To test whether this neurotoxic mechanism is operative in inherited prion diseases, we evaluated the effect of proteasome inhibitors on the viability of transfected N2a cells and primary neurons expressing mouse PrP homologues of the D178N and nine octapeptide mutations. We found that the inhibitors caused accumulation of an unglycosylated, aggregated form of PrP exclusively in transfected N2a expressing PrP from the cytomegalovirus promoter. This form contained an uncleaved signal peptide, indicating that it represented polypeptide chains that had failed to translocate into the ER lumen during synthesis, rather than retrogradely translocated PrP. Quantification of N2a viability in the presence of proteasome inhibitors demonstrated that accumulation of this form was not toxic. No evidence of cytosolic PrP was found in cerebellar granule neurons from transgenic mice expressing wild-type or mutant PrPs from the endogenous promoter, nor were these neurons more susceptible to proteasome inhibitor toxicity than neurons from PrP knock-out mice. Our analysis fails to confirm the previous observation that mislocation of PrP in the cytosol is neurotoxic, and argues against the hypothesis that perturbation of PrP metabolism through the proteasomal pathway plays a pathogenic role in prion diseases
Mini Nutritional Assessment May Identify a Dual Pattern of Perturbed Plasma Amino Acids in Patients with Alzheimer's Disease: A Window to Metabolic and Physical Rehabilitation?
Conflicting results about alterations of plasma amino acid (AA) levels are reported in subjects with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The current study aimed to provide more homogeneous AA profiles and correlations between AAs and cognitive tests. Venous plasma AAs were measured in 54 fasting patients with AD (37 males, 17 females; 74.63 ± 8.03 yrs; 3.2 ± 1.9 yrs from symptom onset). Seventeen matched subjects without neurodegenerative symptoms (NNDS) served as a control group (C-NNDS). Patients were tested for short-term verbal memory and attention capacity and stratified for nutritional state (Mini Nutritional Assessment, MNA). Compared to C-NNDS, patients exhibited lower plasma levels of aspartic acid and taurine (p < 0.0001) and higher 3-methylhistidine (p < 0.0001), which were independent of patients' MNA. In comparison to normonourished AD, the patients at risk of and with malnutrition showed a tendency towards lower ratios of Essential AAs/Total AAs, Branched-chain AAs/Total AAs, and Branched-chain AAs/Essential AAs. Serine and histidine were positively correlated with verbal memory and attention capacity deficits, respectively. Total AAs negatively correlated with attention capacity deficits. Stratifying patients with AD for MNA may identify a dual pattern of altered AAs, one due to AD per se and the other linked to nutritional state. Ten Misconceptions from the History of Analysis and Their Debunking
The widespread idea that infinitesimals were "eliminated" by the "great
triumvirate" of Cantor, Dedekind, and Weierstrass is refuted by an
uninterrupted chain of work on infinitesimal-enriched number systems. The
elimination claim is an oversimplification created by triumvirate followers,
who tend to view the history of analysis as a pre-ordained march toward the
radiant future of Weierstrassian epsilontics. In the present text, we document
distortions of the history of analysis stemming from the triumvirate ideology
of ontological minimalism, which identified the continuum with a single number
system. Such anachronistic distortions characterize the received interpretation

Leibniz's Infinitesimals: Their Fictionality, Their Modern Implementations, And Their Foes From Berkeley To Russell And Beyond
Many historians of the calculus deny significant continuity between
infinitesimal calculus of the 17th century and 20th century developments such
as Robinson's theory. Robinson's hyperreals, while providing a consistent
theory of infinitesimals, require the resources of modern logic; thus many
commentators are comfortable denying a historical continuity. A notable
exception is Robinson himself, whose identification with the Leibnizian
tradition inspired Lakatos, Laugwitz, and others to consider the history of the
infinitesimal in a more favorable light. Inspite of his Leibnizian sympathies,
Robinson regards Berkeley's criticisms of the infinitesimal calculus as aptly
demonstrating the inconsistency of reasoning with historical infinitesimal
magnitudes. We argue that Robinson, among others, overestimates the force of
Berkeley's criticisms, by underestimating the mathematical and philosophical
resources available to Leibniz. Leibniz's infinitesimals are fictions, not
logical fictions, as Ishiguro proposed, but rather pure fictions, like
imaginaries, which are not eliminable by some syncategorematic paraphrase. We
argue that Leibniz's defense of infinitesimals is more firmly grounded than
Berkeley's criticism thereof. We show, moreover, that Leibniz's system for
differential calculus was free of logical fallacies. Our argument strengthens
the conception of modern infinitesimals as a development of Leibniz's strategy
of relating inassignable to assignable quantities by means of his

A Burgessian critique of nominalistic tendencies in contemporary mathematics and its historiography
We analyze the developments in mathematical rigor from the viewpoint of a
Burgessian critique of nominalistic reconstructions. We apply such a critique
to the reconstruction of infinitesimal analysis accomplished through the
efforts of Cantor, Dedekind, and Weierstrass; to the reconstruction of Cauchy's
foundational work associated with the work of Boyer and Grabiner; and to
Bishop's constructivist reconstruction of classical analysis. We examine the
