Theorie leren en gebruiken? Zeg gewoon ja
Should students in business schools leam to understand relevant theory and if so, why? This paper argues that the right attitude is one of theory without apology. Future leaders and managers should learn to understand their environment and only good theories can serve as all infrastructure Tor contemplation, reasoning and evaluation. This does not mean that education and learning should proceed on abstract and inaccessible levels. It only means that relevant and tested theories should be the inspiring and driving forces for business education.

Ice core evidence for a 20th century increase in surface mass balance in coastal Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica
Ice cores provide temporal records of surface mass balance (SMB). Coastal areas of Antarctica have relatively high and variable SMB, but are under-represented in records spanning more than 100 years. Here we present SMB reconstruction from a 120 m-long ice core drilled in 2012 on the Derwael Ice Rise, coastal Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica. Water stable isotope (δ18O and δD) stratigraphy is supplemented by discontinuous major ion profiles and continuous electrical conductivity measurements. The base of the ice core is dated to AD 1759 ± 16, providing a climate proxy for the past  ∼ 250 years. The core's annual layer thickness history is combined with its gravimetric density profile to reconstruct the site's SMB history, corrected for the influence of ice deformation. The mean SMB for the core's entire history is 0.47 ± 0.02 m water equivalent (w.e.) a−1. The time series of reconstructed annual SMB shows high variability, but a general increase beginning in the 20th century. This increase is particularly marked during the last 50 years (1962–2011), which yields mean SMB of 0.61 ± 0.01 m w.e. a−1. This trend is compared with other reported SMB data in Antarctica, generally showing a high spatial variability. Output of the fully coupled Community Earth System Model (CESM) suggests that, although atmospheric circulation is the main factor influencing SMB, variability in sea surface temperatures and sea ice cover in the precipitation source region also explain part of the variability in SMB. Local snow redistribution can also influence interannual variability but is unlikely to influence long-term trends significantly. This is the first record from a coastal ice core in East Antarctica to show an increase in SMB beginning in the early 20th century and particularly marked during the last 50 years

A fast Monte Carlo algorithm for site or bond percolation
We describe in detail a new and highly efficient algorithm for studying site
or bond percolation on any lattice. The algorithm can measure an observable
quantity in a percolation system for all values of the site or bond occupation
probability from zero to one in an amount of time which scales linearly with
the size of the system. We demonstrate our algorithm by using it to investigate
a number of issues in percolation theory, including the position of the
percolation transition for site percolation on the square lattice, the
stretched exponential behavior of spanning probabilities away from the critical
point, and the size of the giant component for site percolation on random

Direct Comparison of the Hinge-Cleaving Proteases IgdE and BdpK for LC-MS-Based IgG1 Clonal Profiling
Human antibodies are heterogeneous molecules primarily due to clonal sequence variations. Analytical techniques to assess antibody levels quantitatively, such as ELISA, lack the power to resolve abundances at the clonal level. Recently, we introduced an LC-MS-based approach that can distinguish and quantify antibody clones using the mass and retention time of their corresponding Fab-fragments. We used specific hinge-cleaving protease IgdE (FabALACTICA) to release the Fab-fragments from the constant Fc region of the antibody. Here, we explore an alternative IgG1 hinge-cleaving protease, BdpK (FabDELLO), and compare it directly to IgdE for use in IgG1 repertoire profiling. We used IgdE and BdpK in parallel to digest all IgG1s from the same set of plasma samples. Both proteases cleave IgG1 specifically in the hinge, albeit via different mechanisms and at two distinct cleavage sites. Notwithstanding these differences, the Fab fragments generated by IgdE or BdpK produced highly similar clonal repertoires. However, IgdE required ∼16 h of incubation to digest plasma IgG1s, while BdpK required ∼2 h. We authenticated the similarity of the clones by top-down proteomics using electron transfer dissociation. We conclude that BdpK performs very well in digesting polyclonal plasma IgG1s and that neither BdpK nor IgdE displays detectable biases in cleaving IgG1s. We anticipate that BdpK may emerge as the preferred protease for IgG1 hinge-digestion because it offers a shorter digestion time compared to IgdE, an equally specific digestion site, and no bias against any IgG1 present in plasma
Pregnancy-associated serum N-glycome changes studied by high-throughput MALDI-TOF-MS
Pregnancy requires partial suppression of the immune system to ensure maternal-foetal tolerance. Protein glycosylation, and especially terminal sialic acid linkages, are of prime importance in regulating the pro- and anti-inflammatory immune responses. However, little is known about pregnancy-associated changes of the serum N-glycome and sialic acid linkages. Using a combination of recently developed methods, i.e. derivatisation that allows the distinction between α2,3- and α2,6-linked sialic acids by high-throughput MALDI-TOF-MS and software-assisted data processing, we analysed the serum N-glycome of a cohort of 29 healthy women at 6 time points during and after pregnancy. A total of 77 N-glycans were followed over time, confirming in part previous findings while also revealing novel associations (e.g. an increase of FA2BG1S1(6), FA2G1S1(6) and A2BG2S2(6) with delivery). From the individual glycans we calculated 42 derived traits. With these, an increase during pregnancy and decrease after delivery was observed for both α2,3- and α2,6-linked sialylation. Additionally, a difference in the recovery speed after delivery was observed for α2,3- and α2,6-linked sialylation of triantennary glycans. In conclusion, our new high-throughput workflow allowed the identification of novel plasma glycosylation changes with pregnancy
Money Market Uncertainty and Retail Interest Rate Fluctuations: A Cross-Country Comparison
This paper analyzes empirically the relationship between money market uncertainty and unexpected deviations in retail interest rates in a sample of 10 OECD countries. We find that, with the exception of the US, money market uncertainty has only a modest impact on the conditional volatility of retail interest rates. Even for the US we find that the effects of money market uncertainty are spread out over time. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that banking relationships include implicit insurance arrangements and thereby reduce uncertainty
