Fisheries in the Development of Indian Economy

    Get PDF
Fisheries sector plays a vital role in Indian economy through substantial forex earnings, employment generation and ensuring nutritional and food security. Contribution of fisheries to total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at current prices is about 1.3 percent. The fisheries economy of our country has undergone rapid structural changes during the last few decades. The vast technological options available to fishers led them for a fast shift from traditional to mechanised and motorised fishing methods in marine fisheries and from traditional to improved seed production and culture practices in inland fisheries

Maternal and perinatal outcome in preterm premature rupture of membranes

Background: Preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) and preterm birth results in one third of perinatal mortality and maternal morbidity such as chorioamnionitis and abruption placenta and preterm caesarean section, Preterm premature rupture of membranes occurs in 3% of pregnancies. PPROM is associated with intrauterine infection. Early detection of intrauterine infection may help in prevent neonatal sepsis. Objective of present study was to analyse the maternal and perinatal outcome of PPROM patients between 28 to 36 weeks +6 days and predict intrauterine infection by access the level of C reactive protein to prevent chorioamnionitis and neonatal infection. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted on 126 antenatal patients between 24 to 36 weeks+6 days with PPROM admitted to Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Cheluvamba Hospital Mysore medical college, Mysore, Karnataka, India from February 2022 to July 2022. After establishing the diagnosis of PPROM patients were monitored and maternal and perinatal outcomes were studied. Results: 24% patients had late PPROM. 63% of early PPROM latency period >24 hours and were managed conservatively till 34 weeks. 18% had chorioamnionitis in that 12% CRP positive status and immediate termination of pregnancy. 73% of newborns in this group needed admission due to complications of prematurity like RDS (54.54%). Perinatal mortality (2.12%) was due to sepsis. 80% of late PPROM had latency period 24 hours and sepsis was 36% in >24 hours and 10% in <24 hours. Conclusions: The most common cause of perinatal mortality in early PPROM is prematurity and its complications. Hence conservative management to prolong pregnancy is recommended under strict monitoring for evidence of chorioamnionitis. C-reactive protein helps to pick up chorioamnionitis early. At the earliest evidence of chorioamnionitis termination irrespective of gestational age is warranted. In late PPROM, perinatal outcome is good. So, termination is advised as conservative management shall add to the fetal and maternal morbidity due to sepsis

Human resources development is an important part of fisheries development. Keeping this in view, the Government of India established the Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE) at Bombay In 1961. The Institute during Its eventful 25 years of service has provided the requisite trained manpower at different levels for fisheries development, industry, research, education, training and extension. In addition to regular courses, a large number of short term training programmes on selected topics have also been conducted at national and Inlernational levels to meet specific demands. The Institute is today recognised as the centre of excellence in higher education in fisheries

Techno-economic viability of rice-fish culture in Assam

    Get PDF
The economic viability of rice-fish culture practiced by the fanners of Assam in North- Eastern part of India was evaluated using techno-economic approach. The fanners followed extensive level farming practice using low input technology. Cobb-Douglas production function was used to determine the input-output relationship of the system. The cost and return evaluation shows that rice-fish culture can be a more profitable option than monoculture of paddy

Project formulation is an important part of entrepreneurship development. Fisheries sector, hosting a gamut of entrepreneurship venture, requires technical know-how in project formulation and management. Keeping this in mind, my colleagues Mr. Shyam S. Salim, Scientist and Dr. R. S. Biradar, Principal Scientist of Fisheries Informatics, Technology Evaluation and Transfer Division of this Institute have written a course manual on "FISHERIES PROJECT FORMULA TlON AND MANAGEMENT' in a simple and systematic manner to cater to the requirements and expectations of students of fishery science. The manual contains basic concepts and applications, which are necessary to understand and practice the subject

Indian Shrimp Trade: Reflections and Prospects in the Post-WTO Era

Indian fisheries sector in view of its potential contribution to national income, nutritional security, employment opportunities, social objectives, and export earnings plays an important role in the 50cio~economic development of the country. The marine products exports contributed a whopping 7245 crofes of foreign exchange to the exchequer during 2005- 2006, which is onethird of the total agricultural exports and 1.5 percent of the total GDP. Shrimps continue to be the predominant item in our. marine export claiming about 29 and 67 percent in quantity and value tenns share, respectively. Until recently, India depended heavily on one product (shrimp) and one market (Japan) for its marine products export and thus there is a need for product and market diversification

Pattern Based Mining For Relevant Document Extraction

    Get PDF
This paper presents efficient mining algorithm for discovering patterns from text collection and search for useful and interesting patterns. For extracting useful information we used pattern based model containing frequent sequential patterns and pruned the meaningless patterns. Here an innovative and effective technique is used for pattern discovery which includes SPM & FP growth algorithms for pattern mining and applies the processes of pattern deploying, pattern evolving, to improve the effectiveness of using and updating discovered patterns for finding relevant and interesting information

An attempt has been made to document traditional knowledge from tribal people, medicinal practitioner, traditional healers medicinemen, herbal venders, rustics etc. The plants were enumerated alphabetically along with botanical name, family and vernacular name.&nbsp

Study of maternal and fetal outcome in pregnancy beyond 40 weeks: a prospective observational study at a tertiary institute

    Get PDF
Background: Prolonged pregnancy is one that exceeds 42 0/7weeks. Management of prolonged pregnancy is very challenging in modern obstetrics. Methods: It is prospective observational study in department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Shri B.M Patil medical college and Research center, deemed to be University, Vijayapur, North karnataka. Study period was from January 2018 to January 2019.Results: Total of 186 pregnant women were included in the study. Results in terms of age, gravidity, gestational age, time of induction, mode of delivery, neonatal outcome and maternal complications. Conclusion: Pregnancies beyond 40 weeks require early detection, effective fetal monitoring and proper planning of labour. In pregnancies beyond 40 weeks, decision of induction should be taken cautiously as early induction leads to failure of induction and increased rates of lower (uterine) segment Caesarean section (LSCS), while delayed induction leads to increased fetal complications
