Microelectrophoresis of selected mineral particles
Particle mobilities of ilmenite, labradorite plagioclase, enstatite pyroxene, and olivine were measured with a Rank microelectrophoresis system to evaluate indicated mineral separability. Sodium bicarbonate buffer suspension media with and without additives (0.0001 M DTAB and 5 percent v/v ethylene glycol) were used to determine differential adsorption by mineral particles and modification of relative mobilities. Good separability between some minerals was indicated; additives did not enhance separability

Emission Line Variability of the Accreting Young Brown Dwarf 2MASSW J1207334-393254: From Hours to Years
We have obtained a series of high-resolution optical spectra for the brown
dwarf 2MASSW J1207334-393254 (2M1207) using the ESO Very Large Telescope with
the UVES spectrograph during two consecutive observing nights (time resolution
of ~12 min) and the Magellan Clay telescope with the MIKE spectrograph.
Combined with previously published results, these data allow us to investigate
changes in the emission line spectrum of 2M1207 on timescales of hours to
years. Most of the emission line profiles of 2M1207 are broad, in particular
that of Halpha, indicating that the dominant fraction of the emission must be
attributed to disk accretion rather than to magnetic activity. From the Halpha
10% width we deduce a relatively stable accretion rate between
10^(-10.1...-9.8) Msun/yr for two nights of consecutive observations.
Therefore, either the accretion stream is nearly homogeneous over (sub-)stellar
longitude or the system is seen face-on. Small but significant variations are
evident throughout our near-continuous observation, and they reach a maximum
after ~8 h, roughly the timescale on which maximum variability is expected
across the rotation cycle. Together with past measurements, we confirm that the
accretion rate of 2M1207 varies by more than one order of magnitude on
timescales of months to years. Such variable mass accretion yields a plausible
explanation for the observed spread in the accretion rate vs. mass diagram. The
magnetic field required to drive the funnel flow is on the order of a few
hundred G. Despite the obvious presence of a magnetic field, no radio nor X-ray
emission has been reported for 2M1207. Possibly strong accretion suppresses
magnetic activity in brown dwarfs, similar to the findings for higher mass T

Properties of the close binary and circumbinary torus of the Red Rectangle
New diffraction-limited speckle images of the Red Rectangle in the wavelength
range 2.1--3.3 microns with angular resolutions of 44--68 mas and previous
speckle images at 0.7--2.2 microns revealed well-resolved bright bipolar
outflow lobes and long X-shaped spikes originating deep inside the outflow
cavities. This set of high-resolution images stimulated us to reanalyze all
infrared observations of the Red Rectangle using our two-dimensional radiative
transfer code. The new detailed modeling, together with estimates of the
interstellar extinction in the direction of the Red Rectangle enabled us to
more accurately determine one of the key parameters, the distance D=710 pc with
model uncertainties of 70 pc, which is twice as far as the commonly used
estimate of 330 pc. The central binary is surrounded by a compact, massive
(M=1.2 Msun), very dense dusty torus with hydrogen densities reaching
n_H=2.5x10^12 cm^-3 (dust-to-gas mass ratio rho_d/rho~0.01). The bright
component of the spectroscopic binary HD 44179 is a post-AGB star with mass
M*=0.57 Msun, luminosity L*=6000 Lsun, and effective temperature T*=7750 K.
Based on the orbital elements of the binary, we identify its invisible
component with a helium white dwarf with Mwd~0.35 Msun, Lwd~100 Lsun, and
Twd~6x10^4 K. The hot white dwarf ionizes the low-density bipolar outflow
cavities inside the dense torus, producing a small HII region observed at radio
wavelengths. We propose an evolutionary scenario for the formation of the Red
Rectangle nebula, in which the binary initially had 2.3 and 1.9 Msun components
at a separation of 130 Rsun. The nebula was formed in the ejection of a common

Anion selective membrane
Experimental anion permselective membranes were prepared and tested for their suitability as cell separators in a chemical redox power storage system being developed at NASA-Lewis Research Center. The goals of long-term (1000 hr) oxidative and thermal stability at 80 C in FeCl3 and CrCl3 electrolytes were met by most of the weak base and strong base amino exchange groups considered in the program. Good stability is exhibited by several of the membrane substrate resins. These are 'styrene' divinylbenzene copolymer and PVC film. At least four membrane systems produce strong flexible films with electrochemical properties (resistivity, cation transfer) superior to those of the 103QZL, the most promising commercial membrane. Aligning employees with the firm’s larger strategic goals is critical if organizations hope to manage their human capital effectively and ultimately attain strategic success. Using recent empirical evidence, theoretical insights, and tangible examples of exemplary firm practices, we provide thought-leaders with a comprehensive view of LOS, how it is created, how it can be enhanced or stifled, and how it can be effectively managed. We integrate LOS with current thinking on employee alignment to help managers more effectively benefit from understanding human capital potential
Harnessing autophagy to overcome mitogen‐activated protein kinase kinase inhibitor‐induced resistance in metastatic melanoma
Background
Patients with malignant melanoma often relapse after treatment with BRAF and/or mitogen‐activated protein kinase kinase (MEK) inhibitors (MEKi) owing to development of drug resistance.
Objectives
To establish the temporal pattern of CD271 regulation during development of resistance by melanoma to trametinib, and determine the association between development of resistance to trametinib and induction of prosurvival autophagy.
Methods
Immunohistochemistry for CD271 and p62 was performed on human naevi and primary malignant melanoma tumours. Western blotting was used to analyse expression of CD271, p62 and LC3 in melanoma subpopulations. Flow cytometry and immunofluorescence microscopy was used to evaluate trametinib‐induced cell death and CD271 expression. MTS viability assays and zebrafish xenografts were used to evaluate the effect of CD271 and autophagy modulation on trametinib‐resistant melanoma cell survival and invasion, respectively.
Results
CD271 and autophagic signalling are increased in stage III primary melanomas vs. benign naevi. In vitro studies demonstrate MEKi of BRAF‐mutant melanoma induced cytotoxic autophagy, followed by the emergence of CD271‐expressing subpopulations. Trametinib‐induced CD271 reduced autophagic flux, leading to activation of prosurvival autophagy and development of MEKi resistance. Treatment of CD271‐expressing melanoma subpopulations with RNA interference and small‐molecule inhibitors to CD271 reduced the development of MEKi resistance, while clinically applicable autophagy modulatory agents – including Δ9‐tetrahydrocannabinol and Vps34 – reduced survival of MEKi‐resistant melanoma cells. Combined MEK/autophagy inhibition also reduced the invasive and metastatic potential of MEKi‐resistant cells in an in vivo zebrafish xenograft.
Conclusions
These results highlight a novel mechanism of MEKi‐induced drug resistance and suggest that targeting autophagy may be a translatable approach to resensitize drug‐resistant melanoma cells to the cytotoxic effects of MEKi
