Biphasic Insulin Aspart (Novomix® 50)
High-Fidelity and Ultrafast Initialization of a Hole Spin Bound to a Te Isoelectronic Center in ZnS
We demonstrate the optical initialization of a hole-spin qubit bound to an
isoelectronic center (IC) formed by a pair of Te impurities in ZnSe, an
impurity/host system providing high optical homogeneity, large electric dipole
moments, and long coherence times. The initialization scheme is based on the
spin-preserving tunneling of a resonantly excited donor-bound exciton to a
positively charged Te IC, thus forming a positive trion. The radiative decay of
the trion within less than 50 ps leaves a heavy hole in a well-defined
polarization-controlled spin state. The initialization fidelity exceeds 98:5 %
for an initialization time of less than 150 ps.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 supplemental information sectio
Statin for the brain: update in 2008
peer reviewedStatins are essential drugs for the prevention of coronary artery disease. There is now evidence that they can also prevent ischemic stroke. The protective effect is related to the reduction in total and LDL cholesterol levels and the clinical benefit is especially high in secondary prevention patients with previous stroke and/or transient ischemic accident. The favourable role of statins is less well documented during an acute stroke than during an acute coronary syndrome, and certainly deserves further studies. Besides their specific cholesterol-lowering effect, statins exert various pleiotropic effects, which probably contribute to vascular protection. Furthermore, statins are able to reduce the formation of beta-amyloid peptide, which plays a key-role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer disease. However, currently available results are heterogeneous and could not firmly support a protective effect of statins in dementia in general, neither in Alzheimer disease more specifically, nor in the reduction of cognitive function in the elderly. Several ongoing trials should confirm or not confirm this new potential indication of statins in a near future
Renal SGLT2 inhibitors, new agents for the management of type 2 diabetes
Kidney plays a role in glucose homeostasis, not only by its capacity to produce glucose through local gluconeogenesis, but also, and even more important in presence of diabetes, by its capacity to excrete glucose in urine when hyperglycaemia exceeds tubular reabsorption threshold. Such reabsorption depends on sodium-glucose cotransporters-2 (SGLT2), which can be blocked by selective inhibitors. These pharmacological agents augment glucosuria and reduce hyperglycaemia independently of insulin. Some have already proven their efficacy to improve glucose control, in monotherapy or in combination, while promoting weight loss and without inducing hypoglycaemia. Dapagliflozin should be the first medication of this new pharmacological class to be commercialized for the management of type 2 diabetes
Analysis-suitable volume parameterization of multi-block computational domain in isogeometric applications
International audienceParameterization of computational domain is a key step in isogeometric analysis just as mesh generation is in finite element analysis. In this paper, we study the volume parameterization problem of multi-block computational domain in isogeometric version, i.e, how to generate analysis-suitable parameterization of the multi-block computational domain bounded by B-spline surfaces. Firstly, we show how to find good volume parameterization of single-block computational domain by solving a constraint optimization problem, in which the constraint condition is the injectivity sufficient conditions of B-spline volume parametrization, and the optimization term is the minimization of quadratic energy functions related to the first and second derivatives of B-spline volume parameterization. By using this method, the resulted volume parameterization has no self-intersections, and the isoparametric structure has good uniformity and orthogonality. Then we extend this method to the multi-block case, in which the continuity condition between the neighbor B-spline volume should be added to the constraint term. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated by several examples based on three-dimensional heat conduction problem
Temporally resolved second-order photon correlations of exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensate formation
Second-order time correlation measurements with a temporal resolution better
than 3 ps were performed on a CdTe microcavity where spontaneous Bose-Einstein
condensation is observed. After the laser pulse, the nonresonantly excited
thermal polariton population relaxes into a coherent polariton condensate.
Photon statistics of the light emitted by the microcavity evidences a clear
phase transition from the thermal state to a coherent state, which occurs
within 3.2 ps after the onset of stimulated scattering. Following this very
fast transition, we show that the emission possesses a very high coherence that
persists for more than 100 ps after the build-up of the condensate.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
