Aquaculture is one of the fastest-growing food sectors in Brazil. Cage fish farming has been widely practiced in the country, mainly in hydroelectric reservoirs. However, different regulatory, technical, and economic challenges may need to be overcome before the sector can achieve increased national and international competitiveness. This study aimed to analyze and compare the competitiveness of tilapia cage farms located on different sides of the Canoas I hydroelectric reservoir, which forms the border between the states of São Paulo and Paraná, Brazil. Structured questionnaires were administered to all fish farmers in the reservoir. Questions about seven competitiveness indicators were rated on a 5-point Likert scale. The results revealed that the major barriers to competitiveness are the institutional environment and environmental sustainability. Paraná has an active environmental inspection service, but São Paulo does not. As a result, tilapia fish farmers in Paraná gave more importance to environmental compliance than those located in São Paulo

In recent decades, there has been a change in consumer behaviour towards adopting a more conscious on the products it purchases. A realização deste projeto de pesquisa contou com o apoio financeiro da FUNDUNESP (Fundação para o Desenvolvimento da Unesp).---------------------------------------------To guarantee to the final consumer products with quality is a question of survival and competitiveness of the agents of the peanut production chain. The aim of this paper is to analyze the technological management in a dairy industry, making it possible to suggest improvements. An open-ended questionnaire was applied, considering two main points: the classification and comprehension of the company’s performance in relation to the technologies available and the understanding of the industry’s technological motivations, making it possible to analyze technological behaviors, forms of acquisition and adoption of technological innovations. It was observed that the company loses competitiveness due to the technology adopted, when compared to bigger players and when the distribution of its products is carried out through supermarkets. The changes introduced in the products’ portfolio were of public-domain, stable and highly divulged, in other words, they were not a technological barrier to the industry’s competitors. The industry established a technological partnership with research institutes for treating the industrial effluents and also with another dairy industry, fortifying its financial, production and marketing areas. It was concluded that improvements in the production process, to reduce costs and better meet the consumers’ needs, are still necessary. The technological partnerships are an important part of this process.strategic management, technology, dairy industry, consumer needs, Agribusiness, Agricultural Finance,

Objective of the study: To analyze the costs and profits of sugarcane production regarding the cultural practices of sugarcane suppliers. Methodology/approach: This study positions itself in this gap by comparatively analyzing 6 types of cultural practices: unraveling, windrowing, application of correctives, herbicides, insecticides and fertilizers, with the option of two systems Fixed rate (TF) and Variable rate (TV). Originality/Relevance: Brazil is a world reference in sugarcane production, with the State of São Paulo being the largest Brazilian producer. However, for sugarcane suppliers to maintain this activity there is a need to reduce production costs and increase profitability/ha. However, there is a theoretical-practical gap in the financial assessment (costs and profits) of different cultural practices inherent to sugarcane production. Main results: The results demonstrated that the costs of cultural practices represent more than 30% of the total sugarcane production costs. The TF system proved to be more cost-efficient in the following operations: correctives, herbicides and insecticides. In the application of fertilizers, the TV system, in broadcast mode, had the best result. Finally, the profit/ton was R$1.70, demonstrating a very low profit margin/ha given the risk of the activity. Theoretical/methodological contributions: The sample for this research comprised 55 sugarcane suppliers from the State of São Paulo, whose data were obtained through a survey. The comparative analysis was based on the difference in costs of cultural practices and the estimation of the level of certainty (profit/costs), analyzed through the cumulative frequency carried out through the Monte Carlo Simulation (SMC)

The evaluation of the performance of rural enterprises is usually based on financial and productive factors. Indicators related to personal and family aims are rarely considered under such perspectives. In this context, this research proposes a systemic model for managing family farming. The conceptual model reveals, by using financial and non-financial performance indicators, the interaction of family needs and the production and financial oriented approaches that occur in this type of business. Farm Management, System Thinking and Balanced Scorecard were the theoretical guidelines of this work. Based on the theory and on the empirical study carried out, it was possible to identify the key variables, and their inter-relations, that affect rural enterprise management
