Assessing the Effects of the Spring Hunting Season Start Date on Wild Turkey Seasonal Productivity and Hunter Behavior

Many states throughout the Southeast have documented declines in wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) harvest and estimates of recruitment in poult-per-hen ratios. Wild turkey populations are driven by seasonal productivity, so the decline in these parameters may indicate a decline in the overall population. One hypothesis as to why we are seeing a reduction in productivity and a potential population decline is that the spring hunting season is disrupting the reproductive cycle by harvesting too many males before they have had the opportunity to breed, or by harvesting dominant males and disrupting the social hierarchy of the flock. Our objectives for this study were to 1) document the effects of a two-week delay in the opening of the hunting season on wild turkey seasonal productivity; and 2) determine if hunter’s behavior, success, or satisfaction changed in response to the delayed hunting season. We radio tagged 432 individual hens from 2017 to 2022 (623 hen-years) in a Before-After-Control-Impact study design to assess nesting activity and we documented 446 initial nests. Based on AIC model selection and linear mixed effect models, we documented no effect of the season start date on nest incubation initiation (nesting rate, P = 0.83), portion of eggs to hatch from a nest (P = 0.33), or nest success (β [beta] = 0.225, SEβ [beta] = 0.256). Furthermore, we documented no effect on poult survival during the first 28 days of life (Δ[delta]AICc = 10.16), or hen survival during the nesting season (Δ[delta]AICc = 6.945). Additionally, we mailed surveys to the same 2,000 turkey hunters in south-middle Tennessee, USA each year from 2017–2022. Hunters in delayed counties heard 33.6% fewer gobbles per trip (P = 0.03) after the season delay, but hunter satisfaction remained the same before and after the season delay (P = 0.18). We documented no biological reason to support a later hunting season in Tennessee. State agencies should collect vital rate data and analyze the effects of various season start dates before changing the turkey hunting season framework

Ultracold Metastable Calcium Ensembles, a Medium for Matter Wave Amplification ?

We propose an experimental implementation of matter wave amplification by optical pumping (MAO) with metastable calcium atoms. Pedagogical Spaces in the Primary School: Teacher Agency in Multilingual Pedagogies

Multilingual pedagogies, which acknowledge and respond to the fact that an increasing number of children grow up with more than one language, can be seen as an emerging yet contested area of pedagogy in the UK and internationally. In England, the situation is complex, because teachers cannot rely on distinct curriculum guidance or a widely established body of practices in this domain, while overall schools remain framed by a culture of performativity. Against this background, this ethnographic study examines aspects that constitute, facilitate or hinder teacher agency in multilingual pedagogies, and asks how it can be enhanced in the primary school. The study draws on the subject-centred sociocultural conceptualisation of professional agency presented by Eteläpelto et. al. (2013), and the ecological approach to teacher agency proposed by Priestley et al. (2015). Both concepts allow for an exploration of teacher agency that starts with the classroom, but considers also its interrelatedness with institutional contexts and teachers’ professional subjectivities. The ethnographic study was conducted in four Lower Key Stage 2 classrooms and one Year 5 class in three maintained inner-city primary schools in London and the East of England. The findings point to a monolingual norm in the official classroom, a dominant ‘EAL-discourse’ and a symbolic multilingualism as major hindrances to teacher agency in multilingual pedagogies. Yet, the analysis also identified tensions and possibilities within the monolingual status quo. Although those were small in scope, teachers’ general agency in their classrooms, their reflexivity based on pedagogical motivations and experience, and their supportive relationships in the workplace are seen as potentially contributing to teacher agency in multilingual pedagogies. To enhance such agency, I propose to develop, conceptually and practically, a ‘pedagogical space’ that is best understood as co-constructed by teachers and their pupils and supported by education policy and the institution school

Schlaf und Nachtfluglärm: subjektive Wirkungen der Kernruhezeit am Frankfurter Flughafen im Längsschnittvergleich

Im Rahmen des Forschungsverbundprojekts NORAH untersuchte das DLR Institut für Luft- und Raumfahrtmedizin im Modul „Auswirkungen von Fluglärm auf den nächtlichen Schlaf“ in drei Messkampagnen die subjektiven Wirkungen des Fluglärms auf den Schlaf vor und nach Eröffnung der Landebahn Nordwest am Frankfurter Flughafen im Oktober 2011 und der damit einhergehenden Kernruhezeit von 23 bis 5 Uhr. Die Studien wurden im Auftrag des Umwelt- und Nachbarschaftshauses im Forum Flughafen und Region (FFR) erstellt. Sie wurden mit insgesamt 202 Probanden zu Hause im durch Nachtfluglärm belasteten Rhein-Main Gebiet durchgeführt. Die subjektiven Wirkungen des nächtlichen Fluglärms vor und nach Einführung der Kernruhezeit wurden durch Einschätzungen der schlafbezogenen psychologischen Parameter „Schlafdauer“, „Schlaftiefe“ und „Schlaferholung“ mit visuellen Analogskalen (VAS) erfasst. Als weitere Indikatoren einer durch Fluglärm schlafgestörten Nacht dienten Müdigkeits- und Schläfrigkeitsbewertungen morgens nach dem Aufstehen mittels eines Fatigue-Fragebogens (FAT) und der Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS). Für alle subjektiven Variablen wurden Expositions-Wirkungskurven in Abhängigkeit vom energieäquivalenten fluglärmbezogenen Dauerschallpegel LAeq sowie der Anzahl an nächtlichen Überfluggeräuschen mittels logistischer Regression mit Zufallseffekt berechnet. Nicht-akustische Moderatoren und das Studienjahr wurden bei der Modellbildung berücksichtigt. Im Längsschnittvergleich zeigt sich für die Schlaftiefe und Schlaferholung sowie die Müdigkeit und Schläfrigkeit eine statistisch signifikante Zunahme im dreijährigen Studienverlauf, was einer Verschlechterung des Schlaferlebens der Anwohner entspricht. Danach hat die Einführung der Kernruhezeit am Frankfurter Flughafen subjektiv zu keiner statistisch signifikanten Verbesserung des Schlafs im Vergleich zur Basiserhebung im Jahr 2011 mit durchgängigem Nachtflugbetrieb geführt. Dieses Ergebnis ist allerdings unabhängig von der Fluglärmbelastung und auf den Einfluss nicht erhobener Parameter zurückzuführen

Nocturnal air, road, and rail traffic noise and daytime cognitive performance and annoyance

Various studies indicate that at the same noise level and during the daytime, annoyance increases in the order of rail, road, and aircraft noise. The present study investigates if the same ranking can be found for annoyance to nocturnal exposure and next day cognitive performance. Annoyance ratings and performance change during combined noise exposure were also tested. In the laboratory 72 participants were exposed to air, road, or rail traffic noise and all combinations. The number of noise events and LAS,eq were kept constant. Each morning noise annoyance questionnaires and performance tasks were administered. Aircraft noise annoyance ranked first followed by railway and road noise. A possible explanation is the longer duration of aircraft noise events used in this study compared to road and railway noise events. In contrast to road and rail traffic, aircraft noise annoyance was higher after nights with combined exposure. Pooled noise exposure data showed small but significant impairments in reaction times (6 ms) compared to nights without noise. The noise sources did not have a differential impact on performance. Combined exposure to multiple traffic noise sources did not induce stronger impairments than a single noise source. This was reflected also in low workload ratings
