Examples of Nonisothermal Moisture Movement in Wood

Moisture content gradients in wood samples subjected to nonisothermal conditions were monitored over time in two separate experiments using sample material from 1) green ash and 2) southern yellow pine. The warm and cold environment temperatures were maintained at 80 F and -40 F for both experiments. The warm environment relative humidity was maintained at 40% during the ash experiment, and 70% during the southern yellow pine experiment. The cold environment relative humidity was not controlled, but was presumed to be nearly 100%. The temperature gradient through the samples was measured using embedded Type-T thermocouples, and the moisture content profile from the warm to cold surface was determined by sectioning sample material.Total average moisture content generally increased as a function of time, indicating that moisture flux into the sample through the warm surface was greater than flux out of the sample at the cold surface. Moisture accumulated toward the warm surface for the southern yellow pine, but was generally more evenly distributed through the depth for the ash samples. These differences were attributed to different warm environment relative humidity conditions maintained between the two experiments

Egg production feasibility study of the Four Corners area: final report - August 1971

The Southern Ute Indians located in the Four Corners area of Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah have been investigating various profitable enterprises that would enable them to raise their standard of living and provide needed employment. Since there are only a few small egg producers in the Four Corners area and these units are below efficient economic size, eggs are generally imported from California. For the above reasons, at the request of the Southern Ute Indian Council through Mr. Leon Hopkins and the Four Corners Regional Commission, a study was conducted in 1970-71 by the Department of Avian Science of Colorado State University to determine the feasibility of establishing an egg production unit by the Southern Ute Indians. Treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism in kidney disease: what we know and do not know about use of calcimimetics and vitamin D analogs

There is a growing understanding of the pathophysiology of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) and a recent emergence of new agents for SHPT treatment in patients with advanced kidney disease. At the same time, appreciation that mineral metabolic derangements promote vascular calcification and contribute to excess mortality, along with recognition of potentially important “non-classical” actions of vitamin D, have prompted the nephrology community to reexamine the use of various SHPT treatments, such as activated vitamin D sterols, phosphate binders, and calcimimetics. In this review, the evidence for treatment of SHPT with calcimimetics and vitamin D analogs is evaluated, with particular consideration given to recent clinical trials that have reported encouraging findings with cinacalcet use. Additionally, several controversies in the pathogenesis and treatment of SHPT are explored. The proposition that calcitriol deficiency is a true pathological state is challenged, the relative importance of the vitamin D receptor and the calcium sensing receptor in parathyroid gland function is summarized, and the potential relevance of non-classical actions of vitamin D for patients with advanced renal disease is examined. Taken collectively, the balance of evidence now supports a treatment paradigm in which calcimimetics are the most appropriate primary treatment for SHPT in the majority of end stage renal disease patients, but which nevertheless acknowledges an important role for modest doses of activated vitamin D sterols

Moisture Adsorption and Transport by Wood Due to a Thermal Gradient Caused by Air-to-Air Thermal Differences

An experiment was conducted in which a thermal gradient was established in wood by air-to-air temperature differences. A walnut board and a redwood board, each 3/4 inch thick and approximately 4 inches wide, were installed in a 1-inch-thick sheet of wood fiber insulation board employed as the lid of a chest-type freezer. The narrow edges of the boards were exposed to room air and freezer air, respectively. The MC profiles were periodically determined by removing cross sections from the boards and reducing them to thin slices. Moisture moved down the temperature gradient and against the concentration gradient. The average MC of the walnut and redwood boards increased 21% and 2%, respectively, during the 53-day test. The results showed that when wood is used as a thermal barrier, water vapor will enter the wood from the warm air and can be condensed in the wood if the necessary temperature profile exists. In certain applications of wood, this raises the possibility for free water accumulation in wood and the associated hazards. A Blueprint for the Charles City Public School’s “Community Den”

Charles City County Public Schools (CCPS) submitted a Request for Assistance to work with a capstone team that would conduct a thorough analysis of the Community Den program and offer a blueprint that would sustain the Den’s efforts well into the future. To address this request, a doctoral Capstone team primarily utilized qualitative methods of data collection in a 3-phrase approach, including, an extensive process of literature review, asset mapping, which is a strength-based approach of connecting communities with resources, document analysis, site visits, interviews, and focus groups. These approaches allowed the capstone team to gain a better understanding of the resources available to the Community Den, the needs of the students and community members it serves, and existing best practices in rural community resource and support initiatives. Findings indicated that improving access to resources, prioritizing community connection, increasing student engagement, and optimizing the physical space as critical elements for the Community Den successful operation. Recommendations focused on opportunities for student engagement, marketing outreach, community engagement, improvements for data management, and physical spacing were formatted as initial steps within the blueprint to improve the overall operations of the Community Den
