    Earthquake source parameters of the 2009 Mw 7.8 Fiordland (New Zealand) earthquake from L-band InSAR observations

    The 2009 MW7.8 Fiordland (New Zealand) earthquake is the largest to have occurred in New Zealand since the 1931 Mw 7.8 Hawke’s Bay earthquake, 1 000 km to the northwest. In this paper two tracks of ALOS PALSAR interferograms (one ascending and one descending) are used to determine fault geometry and slip distribution of this large earthquake. Modeling the event as dislocation in an elastic half-space suggests that the earthquake resulted from slip on a SSW-NNE orientated thrust fault that is associated with the subduction between the Pacific and Australian Plates, with oblique displacement of up to 6.3 m. This finding is consistent with the preliminary studies undertaken by the USGS using seismic data

    Interconnecting bilayer networks

    A typical complex system should be described by a supernetwork or a network of networks, in which the networks are coupled to some other networks. As the first step to understanding the complex systems on such more systematic level, scientists studied interdependent multilayer networks. In this letter, we introduce a new kind of interdependent multilayer networks, i.e., interconnecting networks, for which the component networks are coupled each other by sharing some common nodes. Based on the empirical investigations, we revealed a common feature of such interconnecting networks, namely, the networks with smaller averaged topological differences of the interconnecting nodes tend to share more nodes. A very simple node sharing mechanism is proposed to analytically explain the observed feature of the interconnecting networks.Comment: 9 page

    Bone functional remodeling under multi-field loadings

    Bone remodeling process is investigated theoretically and numerically within the framework of the extended adaptive elasticity. The coupling between the internal and surface remodeling is considered for the solution of the bone remodeling process. A semi-analytical solution based on the state-space method was used to analyze remodeling process of inhomogeneous bone materials subjected to multi-field loadings. The results show that, in contrast to the former works without considering the coupling between the internal and the surface remodeling, the magnitude of the electrical field changes is obviously lower and the remodeling time is shorten significantly. This implies that the coupling between the internal and the surface remodeling plays an important role in the bone remodeling process
