    A cross-sectional study of maternal perception of fetal movements and antenatal advice in a general pregnant population, using a qualitative framework

    BACKGROUND: Maternal perception of fetal movements has been used as a measure of fetal well-being. Yet a Cochrane review does not recommend formal fetal movement counting compared to discretional fetal movement counting. There is some evidence that suggests that the quality of fetal movements can precede quantitative changes however there has been almost no assessment of how women describe movements and whether these descriptions may be useful in a clinical setting. Therefore we aimed to examine maternal perception of fetal movements using a qualitative framework. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design we identified women during routine antenatal care at a tertiary referral hospital, in Sydney, Australia. Eligible women were pregnant ≥ 28 weeks, carrying a single child, > 18 years old, and with sufficient English literacy to self-complete a questionnaire. Post-natally the medical records were reviewed and demographic, pregnancy and fetal outcome data were extracted. Text responses to questions regarding maternal descriptions of fetal movements throughout pregnancy, were analysed using thematic analysis in an explicit process. RESULTS: 156 women participated. There was a general pattern to fetal movement descriptions with increasing gestation, beginning with words such as “gentle”, to descriptions of “strong” and “limb” movements, and finally to “whole body” movements. Women perceived and described qualitative changes to fetal movements that changed throughout gestation. The majority (83%) reported that they were asked to assess fetal movements in an implicit qualitative method during their antenatal care. In contrast, only 16% regularly counted fetal movements and many described counting as confusing and reported that the advice they had received on counting differed. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to use qualitative analysis to identify that pregnant women perceive fetal movements and can describe them in a relatively homogenous way throughout pregnancy that follow a general pattern of fetal growth and development. These findings suggest that women’s perception of fetal wellbeing based on their own assessment of fetal movement is used in an ad hoc method in antenatal care by clinicians

    Morphological and Comparative Transcriptome Analysis of Three Species of Five-Needle Pines: Insights Into Phenotypic Evolution and Phylogeny

    Pinus koraiensis, Pinus sibirica, and Pinus pumila are the major five-needle pines in northeast China, with substantial economic and ecological values. The phenotypic variation, environmental adaptability and evolutionary relationships of these three five-needle pines remain largely undecided. It is therefore important to study their genetic differentiation and evolutionary history. To obtain more genetic information, the needle transcriptomes of the three five-needle pines were sequenced and assembled. To explore the relationship of sequence information and adaptation to a high mountain environment, data on needle morphological traits [needle length (NL), needle width (NW), needle thickness (NT), and fascicle width (FW)] and 19 climatic variables describing the patterns and intensity of temperature and precipitation at six natural populations were recorded. Geographic coordinates of altitude, latitude, and longitude were also obtained. The needle morphological data was combined with transcriptome information, location, and climate data, for a comparative analysis of the three five-needle pines. We found significant differences for needle traits among the populations of the three five-needle pine species. Transcriptome analysis showed that the phenotypic variation and environmental adaptation of the needles of P. koraiensis, P. sibirica, and P. pumila were related to photosynthesis, respiration, and metabolites. Analysis of orthologs from 11 Pinus species indicated a closer genetic relationship between P. koraiensis and P. sibirica compared to P. pumila. Our study lays a foundation for genetic improvement of these five-needle pines and provides insights into the adaptation and evolution of Pinus species

    Developing a new treatment for superficial fungal infection using antifungal Collagen-HSAF dressing

    Fungal pathogens are common causes of superficial clinical infection. Their increasing drug resistance gradually makes existing antifungal drugs ineffective. Heat stable antifungal factor (HSAF) is a novel antifungal natural product with a unique structure. However, the application of HSAF has been hampered by very low yield in the current microbial producers and from extremely poor solubility in water and common solvents. In this study, we developed an effective mode of treatment applying HSAF to superficial fungal infections. The marine-derived Lysobacter enzymogenes YC36 contains the HSAF biosynthetic gene cluster, which we activated by the interspecific signaling molecule indole. An efficient extraction strategy was used to significantly improve the purity to 95.3%. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the Type I collagen-based HSAF (Col-HSAF) has a transparent appearance and good physical properties, and the in vitro sustained-release effect of HSAF was maintained for more than 2 weeks. The effective therapeutic concentration of Col-HSAF against superficial fungal infection was explored, and Col-HSAF showed good biocompatibility, lower clinical scores, mild histological changes, and antifungal capabilities in animals with Aspergillus fumigatus keratitis and cutaneous candidiasis. In conclusion, Col-HSAF is an antifungal reagent with significant clinical value in the treatment of superficial fungal infections

    Influenza Vaccination Coverage among Older Adults with Hypertension in Shenzhen, China: A Cross-Sectional Survey during the COVID-19 Pandemic

    Background: Older individuals with hypertension are at a high risk of being infected with influenza. However, there have been few studies investigating the influenza vaccination status among older people with hypertension. The present work aimed to estimate the vaccination coverage and determine the predictors of seasonal influenza vaccinations among hypertensive patients aged over 60 years in Shenzhen, China. Method: The study used data from an online cross-sectional survey that was conducted in Shenzhen City, China, in October 2020. Frequencies and proportions of all the variables including sociodemographic characteristics and health-related information were described and tabulated based on the influenza vaccination status. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify independent predictors associated with the influenza vaccination. Results: A total of 5216 older people with hypertension aged above 60 years were recruited. Overall, only 4.7% had received an influenza vaccine in the latest influenza season. Using the action toward being vaccinated as the primary outcome, the multivariable regression analysis showed that participants aged over 80 years (aOR 2.957, 95% CI: 1.784–4.900), obtaining higher education levels (aOR 1.424, 95% CI: 1.060–1.914 for high school, aOR 1.681, 95% CI: 1.066–2.650 for college or above), living with a partner (aOR 1.432, 95% CI: 1.068–1.920), using a family doctor (aOR 2.275, 95% CI: 1.744–2.968), and taking a physical examination 1–2 and ≥3 times each year (aOR 2.107, 95% CI: 1.601–2.772 and aOR 2.118, 95% CI: 1.083–4.143, respectively) were more likely to be vaccinated. In contrast, smokers had less likelihood of having the influenza vaccination than non-smokers (aOR 1.829, 95% CI: 1.208–2.767). Conclusions: The coverage rate of influenza vaccinations is far away from optimistic among older adults with hypertension. Additional works should be undertaken immediately to improve the influenza vaccination status

    Analysis of Existing Problems and Improvement Schemes for Substituting Electricity for Scattered Coal in China

    In recent years, a coal-induced haze erupted over a large area in China. Implementing a strategy of substituting electricity for scattered coal (hereafter referred to as SEFSC) for the control of scattered coal is thus urgently needed. In particular, there lies great practical significance in analyzing the existing problems and improving the path of SEFSC in order to ensure rapid and effective advancement in this area. In light of this, the current paper first analyzes the distribution of China’s scattered coal and the relevant policy implementation, and discusses the potential for China to implement SEFSC. Secondly, PEST (policy, economy, society and technology) analysis is used to analyze the existing problems in China’s SEFSC strategy. From this, it becomes clear that the effect of scattered coal handling is still poor due to poor policy implementation, a weak economy, a low level of social acceptance and technical bottlenecks. Finally, based on the present situation and existing problems, this paper puts forward recommendations for improving China’s SEFSC strategy

    Spatial–Temporal Variations in NO<sub>2</sub> and PM<sub>2.5</sub> over the Chengdu–Chongqing Economic Zone in China during 2005–2015 Based on Satellite Remote Sensing

    The Chengdu&#8315;Chongqing Economic Zone (CCEZ), which is located in southwestern China, is the fourth largest economic zone in China. The rapid economic development of this area has resulted in many environmental problems, including extremely high concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5). However, current ground observations lack spatial and temporal coverage. In this study, satellite remote sensing techniques were used to analyze the variation in NO2 and PM2.5 from 2005 to 2015 in the CCEZ. The Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol optical depth (AOD) product were used to retrieve tropospheric NO2 vertical columns and estimate ground-level PM2.5 concentrations, respectively. Geographically, high NO2 concentrations were mainly located in the northwest of Chengdu and southeast of Chongqing. However, high PM2.5 concentrations were mainly located in the center areas of the basin. The seasonal average NO2 and PM2.5 concentrations were both highest in winter and lowest in summer. The seasonal average NO2 and PM2.5 were as high as 749.33 &#215; 1013 molecules&#183;cm&#8722;2 and 132.39 &#181;g&#183;m&#8722;3 in winter 2010, respectively. Over 11 years, the annual average NO2 and PM2.5 values in the CCEZ increased initially and then decreased, with 2011 as the inflection point. In 2007, the concentration of NO2 reached its lowest value since 2005, which was 230.15 &#215; 1013 molecules&#183;cm&#8722;2, and in 2015, the concentration of PM2.5 reached its lowest value since 2005, which was 26.43 &#181;g&#183;m&#8722;3. Our study demonstrates the potential use of satellite remote sensing to compensate for the lack of ground-observed data when quantitatively analyzing the spatial&#8315;temporal variations in regional air quality

    Plasma actuating modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to strengthen interface of MWCNTs/Polylactic acid composites by constructing interlaminar stress-transfer bridge

    A new stepwise hybrid manufacturing (HM) strategy based on plasma-actuating carbon nanotubes is proposed to enhance the interfacial properties of modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MMWCNTs)/polylactic acid (PLA) nanocomposites. Although the thermoelectric coupling field caused by plasma can partially destroy the MMWCNTs, it does not affect the functional groups on the MMWCNTs. Meanwhile, under the actuation of the thermoelectric coupling field, the MMWCNTs can react with the PLA matrix to form chemical bonds with a strong intermolecular force, thus forming a stress-transfer bridge between adjacent substrate layers and fully exerting the nanoscale “rib-reinforcing” effect of MMWCNTs to enhance the interlaminar interface. In addition, the proposed HM method can avoid the weakening of the interlaminar interface caused by the orientation of the nozzle and the restriction of MMWCNTs on the matrix activity indicated in conventional manufacturing methods. Experimental and molecular dynamics simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method in promoting the interfacial properties of MMWCNTs/PLA nanocomposites
