Single transverse-spin asymmetry in Drell-Yan lepton angular distribution
We calculate a single transverse-spin asymmetry for the Drell-Yan
lepton-pair's angular distribution in perturbative QCD. At leading order in the
strong coupling constant, the asymmetry is expressed in terms of a twist-3
quark-gluon correlation function T_F^{(V)}(x_1,x_2). In our calculation, the
same result was obtained in both light-cone and covariant gauge in QCD, while
keeping explicit electromagnetic current conservation for the virtual photon
that decays into the lepton pair. We also present a numerical estimate of the
asymmetry and compare the result to an existing other prediction.Comment: 15 pages, Revtex, 5 Postscript figures, uses aps.sty, epsfig.st
Surface-mode microcavity
Optical microcavities based on zero-group-velocity surface modes in photonic
crystal slabs are studied. It is shown that high quality factors can be easily
obtained for such microcavities in photonic crystal slabs. With increasing of
the cavity length, the quality factor is gradually enhanced and the resonant
frequency converges to that of the zero-group-velocity surface mode in the
photonic crystal. The number of the resonant modes with high quality factors is
mainly determined by the number of surface modes with zero-group velocity.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Polarization in Hadronic \Lambda Hyperon Production and Chiral-Odd Twist-3 Distribution
Polarization of the \Lambda hyperon produced with a large transverse momentum
in the unpolarized nucleon-nucleon collision is analyzed in the framework of
QCD factorization. We focus on the mechanism in which the soft-gluon component
of the chiral-odd spin-independent twist-3 quark distribution E_F(x,x) becomes
a source of the polarized quark fragmenting into the polarized \Lambda. Our
simple model estimate for this contribution indicates that it gives rise to a
significant \Lambda polarization at large x_F. This is in parallel with the
observation that the soft gluon pole mechanism gives rise to a large single
transverse spin asymmetry in the pion production at x_F\to 1.Comment: 10 pages in LaTex + 5 figures in PS files. Phys. Rev. D in press.

Trace distance from the viewpoint of quantum operation techniques
In the present paper, the trace distance is exposed within the quantum
operations formalism. The definition of the trace distance in terms of a
maximum over all quantum operations is given. It is shown that for any pair of
different states, there are an uncountably infinite number of maximizing
quantum operations. Conversely, for any operation of the described type, there
are an uncountably infinite number of those pairs of states that the maximum is
reached by the operation. A behavior of the trace distance under considered
operations is studied. Relations and distinctions between the trace distance
and the sine distance are discussed.Comment: 26 pages, no figures. The bibliography is extended, explanatory
