Can pragmatic inference benefit from topic prominence? ERP evidence from Mandarin Chinese
This study investigated how pragmatic inference making is modulated by information
structure in preceding text. We created three types of two-clause structures in which
the interpretation of a critical word in the second clause was dependent on the
engagement of pragmatic inference as well as a successful establishment of a
referential relation between the target word and an intended antecedent in the
preceding text. An enhanced P600 response was elicited by target words when the
intended referent was in non-topic position compared to topic position or sub-topic
position. Moreover, a reduced N400 was elicited by the target word when the
intended referent in the preceding clause was in non-topic position, compared to topic
position. These findings suggest that the process of building an inferential relation can
benefit from information structural prominence of topicality
Age-Related Differences in the Effects of Masker Cuing on Releasing Chinese Speech From Informational Masking
The aims of the present study were to examine whether familiarity with a masker improves word recognition in speech masking situations and whether there are age-related differences in the effects of masker cuing. Thirty-two older listeners (range = 59–74; mean age = 66.41 years) with high-frequency hearing loss and 32 younger normal-hearing listeners (range = 21–28; mean age = 23.73) participated in this study, all of whom spoke Chinese as their first language. Two experiments were conducted and 16 younger and 16 older listeners were used in each experiment. The masking speech with different content from target speech with syntactically correct but semantically meaningless was a continuous recording of meaningless Chinese sentences spoken by two talkers. The masker level was adjusted to produce signal-to-masker ratios of -12, -8, -4, and 0 dB for the younger participants and -8, -4, 0, and 4 dB for the older participants. Under masker-priming conditions, a priming sentence, spoken by the masker talkers, was presented in quiet three times before a target sentence was presented together with a masker sentence 4 s later. In Experiment 1, using same-sentence masker-priming (identical to the masker sentence), the masker-priming improved the identification of the target sentence for both age groups compared to when no priming was provided. However, the amount of masking release was less in the older adults than in the younger adults. In Experiment 2, two kinds of primes were considered: same-sentence masker-priming, and different-sentence masker-priming (different from the masker sentence in content for each keyword). The results of Experiment 2 showed that both kinds of primes improved the identification of the targets for both age groups. However, the release from speech masking in both priming conditions was less in the older adults than in the younger adults, and the release from speech masking in both age groups was greater with same-sentence masker-priming than with different-sentence masker-priming. These results suggest that both the voice and content cues of a masker could be used to release target speech from maskers in noisy listening conditions. Furthermore, there was an age-related decline in masker-priming-induced release from speech masking
Additive manufacturing of monolithic microwave dielectric ceramic filters via digital light processing
Microwave dielectric ceramics are employed in filters as electromagnetic wave propagation media. Based on additive manufacturing (AM) techniques, microwave dielectric ceramic filters with complex and precise structures can be fabricated to satisfy filtering requirements. Digital light processing (DLP) is a promising AM technique that is capable of producing filters with high accuracy and efficiency. In this paper, monolithic filters made from Al2O3 and TiO2, with a molar ratio of 9:1 (0.9 Al2O3-0.1 TiO2), were fabricated by DLP. The difference in the dielectric properties between the as-sintered and post-annealed samples at different temperatures was studied. The experimental results showed that when sintered at 1550 °C for 2 h and post annealed at 1000 °C for 5 h, 0.9 Al2O3-0.1 TiO2 exhibited excellent dielectric properties: εr = 12.4, Q × f = 111,000 GHz, τf = +1.2 ppm/°C. After comparing the measured results with the simulated ones in the passband from 6.5 to 9 GHz, it was concluded that the insertion loss (IL) and return loss (RL) of the filter meet the design requirements
Research progress of sophoridine’s pharmacological activities and its molecular mechanism: an updated review
Background: Sophoridine, the major active constituent of Sophora alopecuroides and its roots, is a bioactive alkaloid with a wide range of pharmacological effects, including antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, analgesic, cardioprotective, and immunoprotective activities. Sophora flavescens Aiton is a traditional Chinese medicine that is bitter and cold. Additionally, it also exhibits the effects of clearing heat, eliminating dampness, and expelling insects.Aims of the study: To summarize the pharmacological research and associated mechanisms of sophoridine, we compiled this review by combining a huge body of relevant literature.Materials and methods: The information related to this article was systematically collected from the scientific literature databases including PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Science Direct, Springer, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, published books, PhD and MS dissertations. Results: Its antitumor activity is particularly remarkable, as it can inhibit cancer cell proliferation, invasion, and metastasis while inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Additionally, sophoridine also holds therapeutic potential for myocardial ischemia, osteoporosis, arrhythmias, and neurological disorders, primarily through the suppression of related inflammatory factors and cell apoptosis. However, sophoridine has also exhibited adverse effects such as hepatotoxicity and neurotoxicity. The antidisease effect and mechanism of sophoridine are diverse, so it has high research value. Conclusion: As an important traditional Chinese medicine alkaloid, modern pharmacological studies have demonstrated that sophoridine has prominent bioactivities, especially on anti-tumor anti-inflammation activities, and cardiovascular system protection. These activities provide prospects for novel drug development for cancer and some chronic diseases. Nevertheless, the understanding of the multitarget network pharmacology, long-term in vivo toxicity, and clinical efficacy of sophoridine require further detailed research
