    ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNER INTERACTIONS WITH CHATBOTS: NEGOTIATION FOR MEANING

    Chatbots, whose potential for language learning have caused controversy among Second Language Acquisition (SLA) researchers (Atwell, 1999; Fryer & Carpenter, 2006; Fryer & Nakao, 2009; Parker, 2005, Coniam, 2014; Jia, 2004; Chantarotwong, 2005) are intelligent conversational systems stimulating human interlocutors with voice or text. In this paper, two different types of chatbots (pedagogical chatbot Tutor Mike and conversational chatbot Mitsuku) were selected to investigate their potential for foreign language learning by exploring the frequency and patterns of Negotiation for Meaning (NfM) in CMC interactions. 8 Chinese EFL leaners were randomly divided into two groups (lower and higher-level learners), and all learners interacted with both the pedagogical and conversational chatbot in a switching replications research design. Data were analysed through content analysis to identify the number of NfM instances observed, the different stages of NfM, trigger types, modified output and learners’ perceptions. The findings of this study indicate that while learners with low language levels would benefit most from interactions with pedagogical agents, high language level learners expressed dissatisfaction with chatbots and a low level of engagement was observed in their interactions with the pedagogical chatbot.Bu çalışma düşük ve yüksek dil seviyelerindeki yabancı dil öğrencilerinin eğitsel (Tutor Mike) ve iletişimsel (Mitsuku) amaçlarla tasarlanmış iki sohbet robotu ile öğretmen gözetimi olmadan gerçekleştirdikleri etkileşimlerin dil öğrenimi açısından sunduğu fırsatları incelemektedir. Bu makalede yabancı dil öğrenme fırsatları anlam uzlaşmasının gözlenmesi ile belirlenmiştir. Çalışmaya katılan sekiz Çin meşeili öğrencinin iletişimleri araştırmacılar tarafından önerilen çeşitli konular etrafında gerçekleşmiştir. Nicel ve nitel verilerin kullanıldığı bu çalışmada gözlenen anlam uzlaşması miktarı, farklı aşamalardaki anlam uzlaşması miktarı, tetikleyici türleri, iyileştirilmiş çıktılar ve öğrencilerin algıları incelenmiştir. Çalışma bulguları, sohbet robotlarının sınırlı eğitsel kapasitelerine rağmen hedef dil pratiği imkanı sınırlı olan dil öğrencilerine aradil gelişimleri için fırsatlar sunduğunu göstermektedir. Eğitsel sohbet robotlarıyla etkileşimden en yüksek faydayı düşük dil seviyesindeki öğrencilerin sağlayacağı görülmüştür. Bu grubun eğitsel sohbet robotu ile etkileşimlerinde önceki çalışmalarda dil öğrencileri ile diğer insanlar arasındaki internet tabanlı iletişimlerde gözlenen miktarlara benzer oranlarda anlam uzlaşması, iyileştirilmiş çıktı ve sözcüksel tetikleyici miktarı gözlenmiştir. Ancak dil seviyesi yüksek öğrenciler sohbet robotlarıyla iletişimlerinde memnuniyetsizliklerini dile getirmiştir. Bu grubun özellikle eğitsel sohbet robotu ile etkileşimlerinde düşük katılım gözlenmiştir. Bu açıdan, sohbet robotu teknolojisinin günümüz gelişimsel düzeyi göz önüne alındığında, dil seviyesi düşük öğrenciler için sohbet robotları bir seçenek olsa da, dil seviyesi yüksek olan öğrencilerin hedef dili konuşan diğer kişiler ile iletişim kurmaları daha uygun olacaktır

    Human MicroRNA Oncogenes and Tumor Suppressors Show Significantly Different Biological Patterns: From Functions to Targets

    MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs which play essential roles in many important biological processes. Therefore, their dysfunction is associated with a variety of human diseases, including cancer. Increasing evidence shows that miRNAs can act as oncogenes or tumor suppressors, and although there is great interest in research into these cancer-associated miRNAs, little is known about them. In this study, we performed a comprehensive analysis of putative human miRNA oncogenes and tumor suppressors. We found that miRNA oncogenes and tumor suppressors clearly show different patterns in function, evolutionary rate, expression, chromosome distribution, molecule size, free energy, transcription factors, and targets. For example, miRNA oncogenes are located mainly in the amplified regions in human cancers, whereas miRNA tumor suppressors are located mainly in the deleted regions. miRNA oncogenes tend to cleave target mRNAs more frequently than miRNA tumor suppressors. These results indicate that these two types of cancer-associated miRNAs play different roles in cancer formation and development. Moreover, the patterns identified here can discriminate novel miRNA oncogenes and tumor suppressors with a high degree of accuracy. This study represents the first large-scale bioinformatic analysis of human miRNA oncogenes and tumor suppressors. Our findings provide help for not only understanding of miRNAs in cancer but also for the specific identification of novel miRNAs as miRNA oncogenes and tumor suppressors. In addition, the data presented in this study will be valuable for the study of both miRNAs and cancer

    XTQA: Span-Level Explanations of the Textbook Question Answering

    Textbook Question Answering (TQA) is a task that one should answer a diagram/non-diagram question given a large multi-modal context consisting of abundant essays and diagrams. We argue that the explainability of this task should place students as a key aspect to be considered. To address this issue, we devise a novel architecture towards span-level eXplanations of the TQA (XTQA) based on our proposed coarse-to-fine grained algorithm, which can provide not only the answers but also the span-level evidences to choose them for students. This algorithm first coarsely chooses top MM paragraphs relevant to questions using the TF-IDF method, and then chooses top KK evidence spans finely from all candidate spans within these paragraphs by computing the information gain of each span to questions. Experimental results shows that XTQA significantly improves the state-of-the-art performance compared with baselines.     Primary catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome in children with midbrain infarction: a case report

    BackgroundCatastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome (CAPS) is a multi-system autoimmune disease characterized by extensive thrombosis. Pediatric CAPS is extremely rare and associated with a high mortality rate, especially when midbrain infarction is involved. Hence, early diagnosis and prompt initiation of appropriate treatment for CAPS complicated by midbrain infarction are of utmost importance in achieving favorable outcomes.Case presentationIn this report, we present the case of a 14-year-old girl who presented with neurological symptoms and digestive system infection and was initially diagnosed with an “intracranial infection”. After a series of rigorous diagnostic procedures, the patient was ultimately diagnosed with primary CAPS and was immediately transferred to the intensive care unit where she was treated with anticoagulation, glucocorticoids, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy, and multiple plasma infusions. Twenty-seven days after admission, the patient's condition improved with standardized treatment, and she was discharged and followed up regularly.ConclusionThis case report provides a description of the clinical features observed in a pediatric patient with CAPS and concurrent midbrain infarction, highlighting the crucial role of early diagnosis and timely treatment in influencing patient prognosis

    A Case study of a snowstorm at the Great Wall Station, Antarctica

    A case of a snowstorm at the Great Wall Station was studied using data of NCEP(National Centers for Environmental Prediction) analysis, in situ observations and surface weather charts. The storm occurred on August 29th, 2006, and brought high winds and poor horizontal visibility to the region. It was found that the storm occurred under the synoptic situation of a high in the south and a low in the north. A low-level easterly jet from the Antarctic continent significantly decreased the air temperature and humidity. Warm air advection at high level brought sufficient vapor from lower latitudes for the snowstorm to develop. The dynamic factors relating to strong snowfall and even the development of a snowstorm were deep cyclonic vorticity at middle and low levels, the configuration of divergence at high level and convergence at low level, and strong vertical uplift. There was an inversion layer in the low-level atmosphere during the later phase of the storm. This vertical structure of cold air at low levels and warm air at high levels may have been important to the longevity of the snowstorm

However, in China, where the urban PM levels are typically considerably higher than in Western communities, some studies suggest nonlinearity in this association. Health impact assessments (HIA) of PM in China have generally not incorporated nonlinearity in the concentration–response (C-R) association, which could result in large discrepancies in estimates of excess deaths if the true association is nonlinear. Objectives: We investigated nonlinearity in the C-R associations between with PM with aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5μm (PM2.5) and mortality in Beijing, China, and the sensitivity of HIA to linearity assumptions. Methods: We modeled the C-R association between PM2.5 and cause-specific mortality in Beijing, China (2009–2012), using generalized linear models (GLM). PM2.5 was included through either linear, piecewise-linear, or spline functions to investigate evidence of nonlinearity. To determine the sensitivity of HIA to linearity assumptions, we estimated PM2.5-attributable deaths using both linear- and nonlinear-based C-R associations between PM2.5 and mortality. Results: We found some evidence that, for nonaccidental and circulatory mortality, the shape of the C-R association was relatively flat at lower concentrations of PM2.5, but then had a positive slope at higher concentrations, indicating nonlinearity. Conversely, the shape for respiratory mortality was positive and linear at lower concentrations of PM2.5, but then leveled off at the higher concentrations. Estimates of excess deaths attributable to short-term PM2.5 exposure were, in some cases, very sensitive to the linearity assumption in the association, but in other cases robust to this assumption. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate some evidence of nonlinearity in PM2.5–mortality associations and that an assumption of linearity in this association can influence HIAs, highlighting the importance of understanding potential nonlinearity in the PM2.5–mortality association at the high concentrations of PM2.5 in developing megacities like Beijing. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP446

    Aflatoxin B1, zearalenone and deoxynivalenol in feed ingredients and complete feed from different Province in China

    Abstract Background The current study was carried out to provide a reference for monitory of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), zearalenone (ZEN) and deoxynivalenol (DON) contamination in feed ingredients and complete feeds were collected from different Province in China from 2013 to 2015. Methods A total of 443 feed ingredients, including 220 corn, 24 wheat, 24 domestic distillers dried grains with soluble (DDGS), 55 bran, 20 wheat shorts and red dog, 37 imported DDGS, 34 corn germ meal and 29 soybean meal as well as 127 complete feeds including 25 pig complete feed (powder), 90 pig complete feed (pellet), six duck complete feed and six cattle complete feed were randomly collected from different Province in China, respectively, by high-performance chromatography in combined with UV or fluorescence analysis. Results The incidence rates of AFB1, ZEN and DON contamination of feed ingredients and complete feeds were 80.8, 92.3 and 93.9 %, respectively. The percentage of positive samples for DON ranged from 66.7 to 100 %. Domestic DDGS and imported DDGS presented the most serious contamination AFB1, ZEN and DON contamination levels of feeds ranged from 61.5 to 100 %, indicated that serious contamination over the studied 3-year period. Conclusion The current data provide clear evidence that AFB1, ZEN and DON contamination of feed ingredients and complete feeds in different Province in China is serious and differs over past 3-year. The use of corn, domestic DDGS, imported DDGS and corn germ meal, which may be contaminated with these three mycotoxins, as animal feed may triggered a health risk for animal. Feeds are most contaminated with DON followed by ZEN and AFB1. Mycotoxins contamination in feed ingredients and complete feeds should be monitored routinely in China

    Transcriptome analysis of Deinagkistrodon acutus venomous gland focusing on cellular structure and functional aspects using expressed sequence tags

    BACKGROUND: The snake venom gland is a specialized organ, which synthesizes and secretes the complex and abundant toxin proteins. Though gene expression in the snake venom gland has been extensively studied, the focus has been on the components of the venom. As far as the molecular mechanism of toxin secretion and metabolism is concerned, we still knew a little. Therefore, a fundamental question being arisen is what genes are expressed in the snake venom glands besides many toxin components? RESULTS: To examine extensively the transcripts expressed in the venom gland of Deinagkistrodon acutus and unveil the potential of its products on cellular structure and functional aspects, we generated 8696 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from a non-normalized cDNA library. All ESTs were clustered into 3416 clusters, of which 40.16% of total ESTs belong to recognized toxin-coding sequences; 39.85% are similar to cellular transcripts; and 20.00% have no significant similarity to any known sequences. By analyzing cellular functional transcripts, we found high expression of some venom related genes and gland-specific genes, such as calglandulin EF-hand protein gene and protein disulfide isomerase gene. The transcripts of creatine kinase and NADH dehydrogenase were also identified at high level. Moreover, abundant cellular structural proteins similar to mammalian muscle tissues were also identified. The phylogenetic analysis of two snake venom toxin families of group III metalloproteinase and serine protease in suborder Colubroidea showed an early single recruitment event in the viperids evolutionary process. CONCLUSION: Gene cataloguing and profiling of the venom gland of Deinagkistrodon acutus is an essential requisite to provide molecular reagents for functional genomic studies needed for elucidating mechanisms of action of toxins and surveying physiological events taking place in the very specialized secretory tissue. So this study provides a first global view of the genetic programs for the venom gland of Deinagkistrodon acutus described so far and an insight into molecular mechanism of toxin secreting.     Evaluation of a novel saliva-based epidermal growth factor receptor mutation detection for lung cancer: A pilot study.

    BackgroundThis article describes a pilot study evaluating a novel liquid biopsy system for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. The electric field-induced release and measurement (EFIRM) method utilizes an electrochemical biosensor for detecting oncogenic mutations in biofluids.MethodsSaliva and plasma of 17 patients were collected from three cancer centers prior to and after surgical resection. The EFIRM method was then applied to the collected samples to assay for exon 19 deletion and p.L858 mutations. EFIRM results were compared with cobas results of exon 19 deletion and p.L858 mutation detection in cancer tissues.ResultsThe EFIRM method was found to detect exon 19 deletion with an area under the curve (AUC) of 1.0 in both saliva and plasma samples in lung cancer patients. For L858R mutation detection, the AUC of saliva was 1.0, while the AUC of plasma was 0.98. Strong correlations were also found between presurgery and post-surgery samples for both saliva (0.86 for exon 19 and 0.98 for L858R) and plasma (0.73 for exon 19 and 0.94 for L858R).ConclusionOur study demonstrates the feasibility of utilizing EFIRM to rapidly, non-invasively, and conveniently detect epidermal growth factor receptor mutations in the saliva of patients with NSCLC, with results corresponding perfectly with the results of cobas tissue genotyping
