    Thumb function and appearance following treatment of Wassel type III duplication thumbs

    AbstractObjectiveThe purpose of our study is to evaluate thumb function and appearance after surgical correction of Wassel type III thumbs polydactyly.MethodsWe have reconstructed 28 cases of Wassel type III duplication thumbs, in which the duplicated digits were equal or almost equal in size by ablation of a radial digit. The extra thumb is osteotomized at the bifurcation level and excised except for the distal bone fragment supporting the nail bed and fillet flap. Meanwhile, the nail of the retained thumb should be reserved completely, and if the nail has relatively poor appearance it should be repaired by nail lengthening surgery. Eighteen cases were followed up for more than 3 years and were available for assessment using the Japanese Society for Surgery of the Hand evaluation form. The average age at follow-up was 5 years. The size of the nail and distal phalanx was measured to assess the growth of the thumb.ResultsAn average functional point was 12 points (maximum 14 points) and the cosmetic score averaged 3.6 (maximum 4 points) after the assessment. Slightly small nails without a central ridge were deemed acceptable. Second revision surgery is seldom. Long-term results after surgical reconstruction for duplication thumbs were excellent, and all patients and parents were satisfied with the cosmetic and functional results.ConclusionsThis procedure is a helpful and effective way to provide functional and aesthetical thumb for Wassel type III duplication thumbs

    History of Dengue Fever Prevalence and Management in a One Health Perspective in Hainan Island, China

    Dengue fever (DF), a mosquito-borne viral infection common in warm, tropical climates, is an acute infectious disease caused by the Dengue virus (DENV). Geographically, Hainan Island falls in the southern belt of China holding an approximate area of 33,920 km2. Meteorologically, Hainan is characterized to have a tropical maritime monsoon climate, giving rise to favorable natural conditions for different mosquito species. However, the diversity of mosquitoes and their abundance has undoubtedly put the island at a higher risk of mosquito-borne viral disease outbreaks. In this chapter, we have discussed the prevalence, control, and management of DF in Hainan Island in China along with the different species of mosquitoes responsible for transmitting the virus. In addition, future prospective of some important DF management strategies, related research methods, and integrated control strategies for the effective control and management of DF with One Health perspective has been summarized

    Solution-Processed Nanoparticle Super-Float-Gated Organic Field-Effect Transistor as Un-cooled Ultraviolet and Infrared Photon Counter

    High sensitivity photodetectors in ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) range have broad civilian and military applications. Here we report on an un-cooled solution-processed UV-IR photon counter based on modified organic field-effect transistors. This type of UV detectors have light absorbing zinc oxide nanoparticles (NPs) sandwiched between two gate dielectric layers as a floating gate. The photon-generated charges on the floating gate cause high resistance regions in the transistor channel and tune the source-drain output current. This ‘‘super-float-gating’’ mechanism enables very high sensitivity photodetectors with a minimum detectable ultraviolet light intensity of 2.6 photons/µm2s at room temperature as well as photon counting capability. Based on same mechansim, infrared photodetectors with lead sulfide NPs as light absorbing materials have also been demonstrated

    Physical Properties of Radio Stars Based on LAMOST Spectral Survey

    Radio emission has been detected for all types of stars in the Hertzsprung Russell diagram. Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) low and medium-resolution spectroscopic surveys provide a good opportunity to obtain the spectroscopic properties of radio stars. We cross-matched big data from the LAMOST DR7 low resolution spectral survey with a catalogue of radio stars, and obtained 449 stellar spectra of 258 stars.     Autologous temporomandibular joint reconstruction independent of exogenous additives: a proof-of-concept study for guided self-generation

    Joint defects are complex and difficult to reconstruct. By exploiting the body's own regenerative capacity, we aimed to individually generate anatomically precise neo-tissue constructs for autologous joint reconstruction without using any exogenous additives. In a goat model, CT scans of the mandibular condyle including articular surface and a large portion of the ascending ramus were processed using computer-aided design and manufacturing. A corresponding hydroxylapatite negative mold was printed in 3D and temporarily embedded into the transition zone of costal periosteum and perichondrium. A demineralized bone matrix scaffold implanted on the contralateral side served as control. Neo-tissue constructs obtained by guided self-generation exhibited accurate configuration, robust vascularization, biomechanical stability, and function. After autologous replacement surgery, the constructs showed stable results with similar anatomical, histological, and functional findings compared to native controls. Further studies are required to assess long-term outcome and possible extensions to other further applications. The absence of exogenous cells, growth factors, and scaffolds may facilitate clinical translation of this approach

    LWS: A Framework for Log-based Workload Simulation in Session-based SUT

    Microservice-based applications and cloud-native systems have been widely applied in large IT enterprises. The operation and management of microservice-based applications and cloud-native systems have become the focus of research. Essential and real workloads are the premise and basis of prominent research topics including performance testing, dynamic resource provisioning and scheduling, and AIOps. Due to the privacy restriction, the complexity and variety of workloads, and the requirements for reasonable intervention, it is difficult to copy or generate real workloads directly. In this paper, we formulate the task of workload simulation and propose a framework for Log-based Workload Simulation (LWS) in session-based application systems. First, LWS collects session logs and transforms them into grouped and well-organized sessions. Then LWS extracts the user behavior abstraction based on a relational model and the intervenable workload intensity by three methods from different perspectives. LWS combines the user behavior abstraction and the workload intensity for simulated workload generation and designs a domain-specific language for better execution. The experimental evaluation is performed on an open-source cloud-native application and a public real-world e-commerce workload. The experimental results show that the simulated workload generated by LWS is effective and intervenable
