    Measurement and Simulation Study on Effective Drainage Radius of Borehole Along Coal Seam

    A measurement study was conducted for the effective drainage radius of borehole along coal seam #9 of the Kaiyuan Coal Mine using the gas pressure method and gas flow method. The measurement results show that the effective drainage radius of borehole along coal seam #9 was 0.75 m, 27 days after drainage, and 1.5 m, 92 days after drainage. Experimental schemes were designed for the entire evolution of the stress in the coal mass around the borehole, and an experimental study on methane seepage in the coal mass around borehole was conducted. Fitting functions for the permeability of the coal sample and its vertical stress were obtained by fitting the experimental data. Based on the vertical stress–permeability functional relationship of coal masses around borehole, a numerical calculation model for methane seepage from coal masses around borehole was established, and the influences of drainage time, initial gas pressure, borehole diameter, and drainage negative pressure on the effective drainage radius of borehole were investigated. The numerical simulation results show that with the increase in initial gas pressure and borehole diameter, the effective drainage radius of borehole increases continuously but its increase amplitude decreases constantly. With the increase in drainage negative pressure, the effective drainage radius of borehole increases linearly but the increase amplitude is relatively small. The layout parameters of borehole along coal seam #9 of the Kaiyuan Coal Mine were optimized based on the numerical calculation results, and the reasonable drainage time, reasonable borehole diameter, and reasonable drainage negative pressure are 180 days, 120 mm, and 15 kPa, respectively, for the borehole along coal seam #9

    Post-thrombolysis hemorrhage in a patient with hypothyroidism and acute ischemic stroke: Case report

    Thrombolytic treatment with intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) is an effective treatment for acute ischemic stroke. However, its effectiveness and risks in patients with hypothyroidism have not been reported. Here, we report the case of hemorrhagic transformation after intravenous rtPA thrombolysis treatment in a patient with acute ischemic stroke and hypothyroidism. An apparent edema formed around the hematoma and progressively worsened. He also developed lung infection, electrolyte imbalance, and abnormal liver and kidney functions, and eventually died within 1 month of symptom onset. Thus, our observations suggest that caution should be exercised for the administration of intravenous rtPA thrombolysis to patients with hypothyroidism

    Age as a risk factor for acute mountain sickness upon rapid ascent to 3,700 m among young adult Chinese men.

    BackgroundThe aim of this study was to explore the relationship between age and acute mountain sickness (AMS) when subjects are exposed suddenly to high altitude.MethodsA total of 856 young adult men were recruited. Before and after acute altitude exposure, the Athens Insomnia Scale score (AISS) was used to evaluate the subjective sleep quality of subjects. AMS was assessed using the Lake Louise scoring system. Heart rate (HR) and arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) were measured.ResultsResults showed that, at 500 m, AISS and insomnia prevalence were higher in older individuals. After acute exposure to altitude, the HR, AISS, and insomnia prevalence increased sharply, and the increase in older individuals was more marked. The opposite trend was observed for SaO2. At 3,700 m, the prevalence of AMS increased with age, as did severe AMS, and AMS symptoms (except gastrointestinal symptoms). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that age was a risk factor for AMS (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 1.07, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01-1.13, P<0.05), as well as AISS (adjusted OR 1.39, 95% CI 1.28-1.51, P<0.001).ConclusionThe present study is the first to demonstrate that older age is an independent risk factor for AMS upon rapid ascent to high altitude among young adult Chinese men, and pre-existing poor subjective sleep quality may be a contributor to increased AMS prevalence in older subjects

    Online Coupling of Lab-on-Valve Format to Amperometry Based on Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Doped Carbon Paste Electrode and Its Application to the Analysis of Morin

    The potential capabilities and analytical performance of lab-on-valve (LOV) manifold as a front end to amperometry have been explored for the on-line determination of morin. Meanwhile, the electrochemical behaviors of morin were investigated based on polyvinylpyrrolidone- (PVP-) doped carbon paste electrode (CPE), which found that PVP can significantly improve its oxidation peak current. The excellent amperometric current response was achieved when the potential difference (ΔE) of 0.6 V was implemented in pH 6.5 phosphate buffer solution (PBS) that served as the supporting electrolyte. A well-defined oxidation peak has been obtained in studies using PVP as a modifier of CPE based on the oxidation of morin. The present work introduces the LOV technique as a useful tool for amperometric measurement, documents advantages of using programmable flow, and outlines means for miniaturization of assays on the basis of PVP modified CPE.
