    Characterization of low-energy magnetic excitations in chromium

    The low-energy excitations of Cr, i.e. the Fincher-Burke (FB) modes, have been investigated in the transversely polarized spin-density-wave phase by inelastic neutron scattering using a single-(Q+-) crystal with a propagation vector (Q+-) parallel to [0,0,1]. The constant-momentum-transfer scans show that the energy spectra consist of two components, namely dispersive FB modes and an almost energy-independent cross section. Most remarkably, we find that the spectrum of the FB modes exhibits one peak at 140 K near Q = (0,0,0.98) and two peaks near Q = (0,0,1.02), respectively. This is surprising because Cr crystallizes in a centro-symmetric bcc structure. The asymmetry of those energy spectra decreases with increasing temperature. In addition, the observed magnetic peak intensity is independent of Q suggesting a transfer of spectral-weight between the upper and lower FB modes. The energy-independent cross section is localized only between the incommensurate peaks and develops rapidly with increasing temperature.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure

    Profile retrieval of a buried periodic structure using spin echo grazing incidence neutron scattering

    When the neutron scattering technique, Spin Echo Resolved Grazing Incidence Scattering (SERGIS) concept, was originally put forward by Rekveldt [Physica B 1135, 234–236 (1997)] and Felcher et al. [Proc. SPIE 4785, 164 (2002)], they recognized that the specular scattering and the off-specular scattering could be spatially separated due to the tight neutron beam collimation in the scattering plane, a necessity for any reflectometry experiment. In this Letter, we show that it is possible to make large area measurements of periodic grating structures using SERGIS in a number of interesting scenarios. The SERGIS data can be analyzed using a dynamical theory, which makes it possible to effectively retrieve the lateral profile of a commercial periodic diffraction grating. Interestingly, this is still the case even when that grating is buried beneath a highly deuterated poly(methyl methacrylate-D8) polymer layer. We also clearly demonstrate that the maximum sensitivity to lateral structures is achieved when the specular reflection from the grating is excluded from the data analysis, demonstrating a feature of SERGIS that was proposed over two decades ago

    This paper describes a unique service-learning based environmental and humanitarian program for youth, The Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots and Shoots program (R&S). R&S aims to foster learning, personal growth and civic engagement among youth members through service activities and environmental education. Despite its promise as a youth development program and its rapid expansion into 100 countries, little is known about R&S’s impact on youth development. In this study, we explore R&S programs in China and Tanzania, two countries that are maximally different from the U.S. in important cultural and contextual factors. Through qualitative and quantitative methods we describe the programs, their practices, and perceptions of their impact on youths’ personal and social development (cognitive and social competence, leadership, self-efficacy, citizenship and social responsibility). Additionally, we highlight the importance of sociocultural and ecological factors when developing and evaluating youth programs

    Compact spherical neutron polarimeter using high-T-c YBCO films

    We describe a simple, compact device for spherical neutron polarimetry measurements at small neutron scattering angles. The device consists of a sample chamber with very low (<0.01 G) magnetic field flanked by regions within which the neutron polarization can be manipulated in a controlled manner. This allows any selected initial and final polarization direction of the neutrons to be obtained. We have constructed a prototype device using high-Tc superconducting films and mu-metal to isolate regions with different magnetic fields and tested device performance in transmission geometry. Finite-element methods were used to simulate the device’s field profile and these have been verified by experiment using a small solenoid as a test sample. Measurements are reported using both monochromatic and polychromatic neutron sources. The results show that the device is capable of extracting sample information and distinguishing small angular variations of the sample magnetic field. As a more realistic test, we present results on the characterization of a 10 μm thick Permalloy film in zero magnetic field, as well as its response to an external magnetic field
