    MgB2 single crystals substituted with Li and with Li-C: Structural and superconducting properties

    The effect of Li substitution for Mg and of Li-C co-substitution on the superconducting properties and crystal structure of MgB2 single crystals has been investigated. It has been found that hole doping with Li decreases the superconducting transition temperature Tc, but at a slower rate than electron doping with C or Al. Tc of MgB2 crystals with simultaneously substituted Li for Mg and C for B decreases more than in the case where C is substituted alone. This means that holes introduced by Li cannot counterbalance the effect of decrease of Tc caused by introduction of electrons coming from C. The possible reason of it can be that holes coming from Li occupy the pi band while electrons coming from C fill the sigma band. The temperature dependences of the upper critical field Hc2 for Al and Li substituted crystals with the same Tc show a similar dHc2/dT slope at Tc and a similar Hc2(T) behavior, despite of much different substitution level. This indicates that the mechanism controlling Hc2 and Tc is similar in both hole and electron doped crystals. Electrical transport measurements show an increase of resistivity both in Li substituted crystals and in Li and C co-substituted crystals. This indicates enhanced scattering due to defects introduced by substitutions including distortion of the lattice. The observed behavior can be explained as a result of two effects, influencing both Tc and Hc2. The first one is doping related to the changes in the carrier concentration, which may lead to the decrease or to the increase of Tc. The second one is related to the introduction of new scattering centers leading to the modification of the interband and/or intraband scattering and therefore, to changes in the superconducting gaps and to the reduction of Tc.Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures, submitted to PR

    Influence of low-level Pr substitution on the superconducting properties of YBa2Cu3O7-delta single crystals

    We report on measurements on Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7-delta single crystals, with x varying from 0 to 2.4%. The upper and the lower critical fields, Hc2 and Hc1, the Ginzburg-Landau parameter and the critical current density, Jc(B), were determined from magnetization measurements and the effective media approach scaling method.     Emergence of superconductivity in single-crystalline LaFeAsO under simultaneous Sm and P substitution

    We report on the high-pressure growth, structural characterization, and investigation of the electronic properties of single-crystalline LaFeAsO co-substituted by Sm and P, in both its normal-and super-conducting states. Here, the appearance of superconductivity is attributed to the inner chemical pressure induced by the smaller-size isovalent substituents. X-ray structural refinements show that the partial substitution of La by Sm and As by P in the parent LaFeAsO compound leads to a contraction in both the conducting Fe-2(As,P)(2) layers and the interlayer spacing. The main parameters of the superconducting state, including the critical temperature, the lower-and upper critical fields, as well as the coherence length, the penetration depth, and their anisotropy, were determined from magnetometry measurements on a single -crystalline La0.87Sm0.13FeAs0.91P0.09O sample. The critical current density (jc), as resulting from loops of magnetization hysteresis in the self-generated magnetic field, is 2 x 10(6) A/cm(2) at 2 K. Overall, our findings illustrate a rare and interesting case of how superconductivity can be induced by co-substitution in the 1111 family. Such approach delineates new possibilities in the creation of superconductors by design, thus sti-mulating the exploration of related systems under multi-chemical pressure conditions.(c) 2023 The Authors.     Comparative Effectiveness of Linezolid and Vancomycin Among a National Veterans Affairs Cohort with Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Pneumonia

    Study Objective: As variability in vancomycin dosing, susceptibility, and tolerability has driven the need to compare newer agents with vancomycin in real-world clinical settings, we sought to quantify the effectiveness of linezolid compared with vancomycin on clinical outcomes for the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) pneumonia. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Data Source: Veterans Health Administration national databases. Patients: Adults admitted to Veterans Affairs hospitals between January 2002 and September 2010 with diagnosis codes for MRSA and pneumonia, and who initiated and received at least 3 days of continuous intravenous vancomycin therapy (4943 patients) or intravenous or oral linezolid therapy (328 patients) while in the hospital. Measurements and Main Results: Propensity score–adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression models quantified the effect of linezolid compared with vancomycin on time to 30-day mortality (primary outcome), therapy change, hospital discharge, discharge from intensive care, intubation, 30-day readmission, and 30-day MRSA reinfection. In addition, a composite outcome of clinical success was defined as discharge from the hospital or intensive care unit by day 14 after treatment initiation, in the absence of death, therapy change, or intubation by day 14. Subgroup analyses were performed in a validated microbiology-confirmed MRSA subgroup and clinical subgroup meeting clinical criteria for infection. Although a number of baseline variables differed significantly between the vancomycin and linezolid treatment groups, balance was achieved within propensity score quintiles. A significantly lower rate of therapy change was observed in the linezolid group (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 0.68, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.48–0.96). The clinical success rate was significantly higher among patients treated with linezolid (adjusted HR 1.25, 95% CI 1.07–1.47). Comparable findings were observed in the subgroup analyses. Conclusion: Individual clinical outcomes were similar among patients treated for MRSA pneumonia with linezolid compared with vancomycin. A significantly higher rate of the composite outcome of clinical success was observed, however, among patients treated with linezolid compared with vancomycin
