    Seasonality of the pelagic ichthyofauna in the Lazarev Sea

    The Southern Ocean is characterised by an extreme seasonality which is best observed by the huge variation in sea ice extent. It expands from a minimum extent of 4 million square kilometres in February to a maximum of 19 million square kilometres in September and influences the physics and chemistry of the surface layers and the corresponding life histories of organisms. Reduced light condition and sea ice cover have a pronounced impact on primary production and predation risk in the pelagic zone. Here we present comparison of the distribution of fish in the Lazarev Sea correlated to biotic an abiotic features. Samples were collected in the framework of three LAKRIS (Lazarev Krill Study) campaigns onboard RV Polarstern during summer, fall and winter. The main focus was on factors affecting krill distribution. As such a wide variety of biotic and abiotic measures were made. Fish and fish larvae were collected from trawls from the upper 200m during both seasons. Both during summer and winter larval composition was dominated by pre-metamorphic Electrona antarctica and Notolepis coatsi. Post-metamorphic E. antarctica showed a pronounced seasonal difference in occurrence

    See the cake and have it too? Investigating the effect of watching a TV cooking show on unhealthy food choices

    Contains fulltext : 233413.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)This study tested whether exposure to food-related (vs. non-food related) TV content would increase unhealthy food choices in unsuccessful restrained eaters (i.e., chronic dieters with low perceived self-regulatory success; PSRS), decrease unhealthy food choices in successful restrained eaters (i.e., chronic dieters with high PSRS), and would not affect food choices in unrestrained eaters (i.e., non-dieters). As such, we attempted to (1) explain previous mixed findings on behavioral effects of exposure to food-related TV content, and (2) generalize previous findings on successful and unsuccessful restrained and unrestrained eaters' differential reactivity to isolated food cues (e.g., food words) to food cues embedded in TV content. In a one-factorial between-subjects experiment, participants viewed a cooking segment in which high-calorie cakes were prepared (n = 50) or a non-food segment (n = 62) of a TV show. The percentage of unhealthy (vs. healthy) food choices in a computerized choice task served as dependent variable. Eating restraint and PSRS were measured afterwards. In contrast to the hypothesis, no three-way interaction between TV content, eating restraint, and PSRS on the percentage of unhealthy food choices was found. However, it was found that overall, people with lower levels of PSRS made a higher percentage of unhealthy food choices compared to people with higher levels of PSRS. Contrasting findings from previous research using isolated food cues, this study showed no evidence of unsuccessful restrained eaters' heightened susceptibility to food cues in TV content, possibly explained by a lower salience of or attention to food cues.8 p

    Is it more feeling or thinking? The influence of affective and cognitive attitude on adolescents' intention to engage in binge drinking

    Previous work has revealed that interventions aiming to reduce adolescent binge drinking commonly focus on cognitive attitudes, but are insufficiently effective in changing binge-drinking intentions. The focus on these cognitive attitudes might be the reason for this insufficient success. That is, other work has revealed that affective attitudes have a stronger influence on binge-drinking intention than cognitive attitudes. However, this relation has so far only been found among traditional college students and pre-vocational school students, therewith neglecting another important population at risk, namely vocational community college students. This study examines whether affective attitudes are also significantly stronger influencers of binge-drinking intentions among vocational community college students. Using a sample of 298 vocational community college students (Mage = 17.63), the current study shows that affective attitudes were more strongly related to vocational community college students' intention to engage in binge drinking than cognitive attitudes. This finding indicates that the effectiveness of interventions targeting adolescent binge drinking can be improved by incorporating content elements concerning affective attitudes
