"The More the Merrier: The Impact of Enlargement on EU Budgetary Negotiations"

Why were some of the European Union (EU) budgets vetoed in the earlier years of the EU but we do not observe any vetoes lately? Recent research on the EU budget proposes insufficient explanations of the reduction in conflict on budgetary negotiations. The literature on enlargement is pessimistic about the effects of enlargement, especially when dealing with EU funds where member states are expected to fight more. The existing bargaining models offer some insights on the cooperative dynamics in the EU, but provide no empirical testing. I argue that enlargement stabilizes the budgetary process and makes cooperation more durable among the budgetary authorities – the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers. Using formal theory and regression analysis, I show that every country that joins the EU increases the bargaining space on the budget and thus makes agreement more likely

The term attracts interest from both people who apply it in their day-to-day activities and, also, from the academic field which is involved in its study, in order to help create future responsible managers. In order to familiarize ourselves with the current situation, we decided to determine the perception level students had in relation to this concept, not forgetting the fact that they might be employed in companies operating in this specific field and, also, that all of them are members of the community where these organizations function. Our study is based on the interpretation of a series of results extracted from a survey conducted by applying a questionnaire by using the online platform SurveyConsole. The study revealed numerous aspects previously deducted from our own observations, but there were also quite a few unexpected conclusions.corporate social responsibility, education, ethics, perception.

This dissertation analyzes how institutions change, particularly how institutions go in and out of equilibrium; it proposes a dynamic account of institutional change by examining the endogenous and exogenous factors that change the preferences of players and the distributional implications of (renegotiated) institutional outcomes. The EU budgetary negotiations provide a compelling case for institutional change in the EU. Motto:"Disequilibrium, or the potential that the status quo be upset, is the characteristic feature of politics
What prevents purely random embodiments of tastes is the fact that decisions are customarily made within the framework of known rules, which are what we commonly call institutions." (Riker 1980, 443

    Get PDF
