Adherent carbon film deposition by cathodic arc with implantation

    Get PDF
A method of improving the adhesion of carbon thin films deposited using a cathodic vacuum arc by the use of implantation at energies up to 20 keV is described. A detailed analysis of carbon films deposited onto silicon in this way is carried out using complementary techniques of transmission electron microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is presented. This analysis shows that an amorphous mixing layer consisting of carbon and silicon is formed between the grown pure carbon film and the crystalline silicon substrate. In the mixing layer, it is shown that some chemical bonding occurs between carbon and silicon. Damage to the underlying crystalline silicon substrate is observed and believed to be caused by interstitial implanted carbon atoms which XPS shows are not bonded to the silicon. The effectiveness of this technique is confirmed by scratch testing and by analysis with scanning electron microscopy which shows failure of the silicon substrate occurs before delamination of the carbon film

Excimer laser crystallization of InGaZnO4 on SiO2 substrate

In this paper, we were able to crystallize InGaZnO4 (IGZO) by excimer laser on SiO2 substrate. It was observed that uniform [0001] textured polycrystalline IGZO film has been obtained without any grain boundaries and oxygen vacancies on SiO2 substrate. This process is very promising in fabricating high quality IGZO thin film transistors (TFT) at low temperature without seed substrate.Quantum NanoscienceApplied Science

Molecular signatures of the three stem cell lineages in Hydra and the emergence of stem cell function at the base of multicellularity

How distinct stem cell populations originate and whether there is a clear stem cell “genetic signature” remain poorly understood. Understanding the evolution of stem cells requires molecular profiling of stem cells in an animal at a basal phylogenetic position. In this study, using transgenic Hydra polyps, we reveal for each of the three stem cell populations a specific signature set of transcriptions factors and of genes playing key roles in cell type-specific function and interlineage communication. Our data show that principal functions of stem cell genes, such as maintenance of stemness and control of stem cell self-renewal and differentiation, arose very early in metazoan evolution. They are corroborating the view that stem cell types shared common, multifunctional ancestors, which achieved complexity through a stepwise segregation of function in daughter cells
