    From growth goals to proactive organizational resilience: first evidence in women-led and non-women-led Italian wineries

    In a fast-changing world, characterized by evenly unexpected challenges and shocks, being resilient is a crucial aspect for every organization. Drawing from the goal setting theory and the double standards of competence perspective, this study aims at understanding the antecedents of organizational proactive resilience. More precisely, it looks at the impact of quantitative and qualitative organizational growth goals on proactive resilience, distinguishing between women-led and non-women-led firms. Based on a unique sample of 167 Italian wineries (67 women-led and 100 non-women-led), this paper tests this theoretical model using path analysis techniques. The wine sector is a particularly interesting context to study the phenomenon due to its exposure to natural disasters, new consumers' behaviours that are requiring firms to continuously innovate and differentiate in a traditionally low-tech sector, but also changes happening at wineries' management level. In fact, the sector has been traditionally male dominated, but women are increasingly taking the lead. The findings indicate that growth goals differently contribute to proactive organizational resilience, but their effects vary in women- and non-women-led businesses. Specifically, these results suggest that in women-led wineries, proactive organizational resilience depends on quantitative growth goals while in non-women-led wineries businesses this depends on qualitative growth goals

    Monopoles, abelian projection, and gauge invariance

    A direct connection is proved between the Non-Abelian Bianchi Identities(NABI), and the abelian Bianchi identities for the 't Hooft tensor. As a consequence the existence of a non-zero magnetic current is related to the violation of the NABI's and is a gauge-invariant property. The construction allows to show that not all abelian projections can be used to expose monopoles in lattice configurations: each field configuration with non-zero magnetic charge identifies its natural projection, up to gauge transformations which tend to unity at large distances. It is shown that the so-called maximal-abelian gauge is a legitimate choice. It is also proved, starting from the NABI, that monopole condensation is a physical gauge invariant phenomenon, independent of the choice of the abelian projection.Comment: 9 pages, no figur

    Exploring the attitude towards the adoption of a sustainable diet: a cross-country comparison

    Purpose: Understanding the determinants that influence consumers' attitude to adopt sustainable diets represents an important area of research to promote sustainable food consumption. The aim of this study is to investigate how (1) the individual openness to new foods (ONFs), (2) the involvement in food trends (IFTs) and (3) the social media use (SMU) can potentially impact the attitude towards the adoption of a sustainable diet (ATSD). Design/methodology/approach: The authors conducted a structured survey in eight countries: Italy, Germany, Poland, USA, Brazil, Japan, Korea and China. The final sample of 5,501 individuals was analysed applying a structural equation model. Findings: The main results show that attitude towards the ATSD is influenced differently by the antecedents investigated in each country. In particular, the ONF positively influences the ATSD only in Italy, USA and Germany. IFT positively influences the ATSD only in Italy, Poland and USA, while negatively in Germany. SMU has a positive influence on the ATSD only in Japan, USA and Germany, while a negative one in Brazil and Korea. Originality/value: This study presents a cross-country comparison about the antecedents of attitude towards the ATSD, thus providing evidence for the need of ad hoc marketing strategies by companies and policies by institutions at single country level

    The virtuous cycle of stakeholder engagement in developing a sustainability culture: Salcheto winery

    Stakeholder engagement in sustainability represents a powerful driver for value creation. Drawing from stakeholder theory, this paper explores how a firm with a proactive sustainable behaviour engages stakeholders in developing innovation and creating value. A longitudinal, single case study of the Salcheto winery was carried out. Since the late 1990s, Salcheto has been at the forefront of wine eco-innovation and it has played a key role in the development of Montepulciano (Tuscany, Italy) as one of the first sustainable wine clusters worldwide. The development of a sustainable wine culture is one of the firm's various innovations. In doing so, the firm has had to face three challenges - identity creation, legitimization and enhancement - and has engaged its stakeholders through three specific mechanisms (adoption and development; co-creation and diffusion; exploitation and contamination).     “Influence of the Therapy with Dorzolamide on the Corneal Structures: Analysis by Confocal Microscopy (CS3)”

    Purpose: To value, in vivo, with the confocal microscopy(CS3) the corneal microscopic changes in a group of patients in therapy with Dorzolamide 2% eyedrops. Methods:Thirty patients (sixty eyes) with monocular hypertension (IOP21 mmHg) and no previous ipotonic therapy were recruited. The hypertensive eye (HE)was treated with Dorzolamine 2% eyedrops three times daily, the normal tension eye (NE) was used as the control eye. At the time of recruitment, one and three months after the beginning of treatment were performed: applanation tonometry, ultrasound pachimetry (USP), and a CS examination. Results: Mean age was 41,13±10,515 year, at the recruitment time: mean IOP was 16,50±2.34 mmHg in the NE and 22,06±0.68 mmHg in the HE, USP was 542,50±31,18 µ in the NE and 536,63±38,08 in the HE, endothelial cell density was (cell/mm2) 2473,37±339,58 in the NE and 2386,94±284,16 in the HE, stromal reflectivity was 0.36±0.06 in the NE and 0.36±0.05 in the HE. At each control time the IOP was statistically reduced in the treated eyes of a mean of 7,25 mmHg (p<0.01), all the corneal data didn’t show a statistically significant change during the follow–up period, only the stromal reflectivity seemed to be increased in the last control of 0,1 (p<0.005). Conclusions: The CS3 examination allowed us to value the microscopic corneal structure and to show that no clinically significant changes were produced by dorzolamide local therapy

    't Hooft tensor for generic gauge group

    We study monopoles in gauge theories with generic gauge group. Magnetic charges are in one-to-one correspondence with the second homotopy classes at spatial infinity (Π2{\Pi}_2), which are therefore identified by the 't Hooft tensor.     Hypnosis and superficial cervical anesthesia for total thyroidectomy in a high-risk patient - A case report.

    Total thyroidectomy can be challenging in high-risk patients. Local cervical anesthesia with sedation is an alternative to general anesthesia. A 33-year old male patient with cyanotic congenital heart disease due to unrepaired tricuspid atresia type Ic and associated pulmonary arterial hypertension presented with tachycardic atrial fibrillation and amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis resulting in recurrent hemodynamic instability. Because of difficulties controlling the thyrotoxic state, the indication for total thyroidectomy was established. Total thyroidectomy was subsequently performed using local anesthesia combined using a hypnosis-analgesia technique instead of intravenous sedation. The intervention and the post-operative course were uneventful. A well-established therapist-patient relationship is crucial for a successful induction of hypnosis. Patient motivation and expectations are equally important for a successful implementation of this approach. We conclude that hypnosis combined with local anesthesia provides an effective alternative in selected patients with very high anesthesiological risk

    Optimization of an organic memristor as an adaptive memory element

    The combination of memory and signal handling characteristics of a memristor makes it a promising candidate for adaptive bioinspired information processing systems. This poses stringent requirements on the basic device, such as stability and reproducibility over a large number of training/learning cycles, and a large anisotropy in the fundamental control material parameter, in our case the electrical conductivity. In this work we report results on the improved performance of electrochemically controlled polymeric memristors, where optimization of a conducting polymer polyaniline in the active channel and better environmental control of fabrication methods led to a large increase both in the absolute values of the conductivity in the partially oxydized state of polyaniline and of the on-off conductivity ratio. These improvements are crucial for the application of the organic memristor to adaptive complex signal handling networks
