Diffractive Deep-Inelastic Scattering
Diffractive deep inelastic events with a large rapidity gap are analyzed by
using a Regge model for the pomeron flux and a gluonic content for the pomeron.
Contrary to the expectations, the simplest assumption for the pomeron
trajectory gives the best agreement with the data on the ratio of diffractive
to the total number of events. In this case the main properties of the model
are described by an analytic expression.Comment: 18 pages (postcript file
Fractal Inspired Models of Quark and Gluon Distributions and Longitudinal Structure Function FL(x, Q2) at small x
In recent years, Fractal Inspired Models of quark and gluon densities at
small x have been proposed. In this paper, we investigate longitudinal
structure function F-L (x, Q2) within this approach. We make predictions using
the QCD based approximate relation between the longitudinal structure function
and the gluon density. As the Altarelli-Martinelli equation for the
longitudinal structure function cannot be applied to Model I due to the
presence of a singularity in the Bjorken x-space we consider Model II only. The
qualitative feature of the prediction of Model II is found to be compatible
with the QCD expectation.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication on 10-07-2010 in Indian

Measurement of the diffractive structure function in deep inelastic scattering at HERA
This paper presents an analysis of the inclusive properties of diffractive
deep inelastic scattering events produced in interactions at HERA. The
events are characterised by a rapidity gap between the outgoing proton system
and the remaining hadronic system. Inclusive distributions are presented and
compared with Monte Carlo models for diffractive processes. The data are
consistent with models where the pomeron structure function has a hard and a
soft contribution. The diffractive structure function is measured as a function
of \xpom, the momentum fraction lost by the proton, of , the momentum
fraction of the struck quark with respect to \xpom, and of . The \xpom
dependence is consistent with the form \xpoma where
in all bins of and
. In the measured range, the diffractive structure function
approximately scales with at fixed . In an Ingelman-Schlein type
model, where commonly used pomeron flux factor normalisations are assumed, it
is found that the quarks within the pomeron do not saturate the momentum sum
rule.Comment: 36 pages, latex, 11 figures appended as uuencoded fil
Measurement of the proton and deuteron structure functions, F2p and F2d, and of the ratio sigma(L)/sigma(T)
The muon-proton and muon-deuteron inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross
sections were measured in the kinematic range 0.002 < x < 0.60 and 0.5 < Q2 <
75 GeV2 at incident muon energies of 90, 120, 200 and 280 GeV. These results
are based on the full data set collected by the New Muon Collaboration,
including the data taken with a small angle trigger. The extracted values of
the structure functions F2p and F2d are in good agreement with those from other
experiments. The data cover a sufficient range of y to allow the determination
of the ratio of the longitudinally to transversely polarised virtual photon
absorption cross sections, R= sigma(L)/sigma(T), for 0.002 < x < 0.12 . The
values of R are compatible with a perturbative QCD prediction; they agree with
earlier measurements and extend to smaller x.Comment: In this replacement the erroneously quoted R values in tables 3-6 for
x>0.12, and R1990 values in tables 5-6 for all x, have been corrected, and
the cross sections in tables 3-4 have been adapted. Everything else,
including the structure functions F2, remained unchanged. 22 pages, LateX,

Observation of hard scattering in photoproduction events with a large rapidity gap at HERA
Events with a large rapidity gap and total transverse energy greater than 5
GeV have been observed in quasi-real photoproduction at HERA with the ZEUS
detector. The distribution of these events as a function of the
centre of mass energy is consistent with diffractive scattering. For total
transverse energies above 12 GeV, the hadronic final states show predominantly
a two-jet structure with each jet having a transverse energy greater than 4
GeV. For the two-jet events, little energy flow is found outside the jets. This
observation is consistent with the hard scattering of a quasi-real photon with
a colourless object in the proton.Comment: 19 pages, latex, 4 figures appended as uuencoded fil
Non-Linear Pomeron Trajectory in Diffractive Deep Inelastic Scattering
Recent experimental data on diffractive deep inelastic scattering collected
by the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations at HERA are analysed in a model with a
non-linear trajectory in the pomeron flux. The dependence of the
diffractive structure function is predicted. The normalization of
the pomeron flux and the (weak) dependence of the pomeron structure
function are revised as well.Comment: 16 pages, Latex + 3 figures, postscrip
Effects of oral adenosine 5'-triphosphate and adenosine in enteric-coated capsules on indomethacin-induced permeability changes in the human small intestine: a randomized cross-over study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>It is well-known that nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can cause damage to the small bowel associated with disruption of mucosal barrier function. In healthy human volunteers, we showed previously that topical administration of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) by naso-intestinal tube attenuated a rise in small intestinal permeability induced by short-term challenge with the NSAID indomethacin. This finding suggested that ATP may be involved in the preservation of intestinal barrier function. Our current objective was to corroborate the favourable effect of ATP on indomethacin-induced permeability changes in healthy human volunteers when ATP is administered via enteric-coated capsules, which is a more practically feasible mode of administration. Since ATP effects may have been partly mediated through its breakdown to adenosine, effects of encapsulated adenosine were tested also.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>By ingesting a test drink containing 5 g lactulose and 0.5 g L-rhamnose followed by five-hour collection of total urine, small intestinal permeability was assessed in 33 healthy human volunteers by measuring the urinary lactulose/rhamnose excretion ratio. Urinary excretion of lactulose and L-rhamnose was determined by fluorescent detection high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Basal permeability of the small intestine was assessed as a control condition (no indomethacin, no ATP/adenosine). As a model of increased small intestinal permeability, two dosages of indomethacin were ingested at 10 h (75 mg) and 1 h (50 mg) before ingesting the lactulose/rhamnose test drink. At 1.5 h before indomethacin ingestion, two dosages of placebo, ATP (2 g per dosage) or adenosine (1 g per dosage) were administered via enteric-coated hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) capsules with Eudragit© L30D-55.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Median urinary lactulose/rhamnose excretion ratio (g/g) in the control condition was 0.032 (interquartile range: 0.022–0.044). Compared to the control condition, lactulose/rhamnose ratio after ingestion of indomethacin plus placebo was significantly increased to 0.039 (0.035–0.068); P < 0.01). The indomethacin-induced increase was neither affected by administration of encapsulated ATP (0.047 (0.033–0.065)) nor adenosine (0.050 (0.030–0.067)). Differences in L/R ratios between the conditions with indomethacin plus placebo, ATP or adenosine were not significant.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In this study, either ATP or adenosine administered via enteric-coated capsules had no effect on indomethacin-induced small intestinal permeability changes in healthy human volunteers. The observed lack of effect of encapsulated ATP/adenosine may have been caused by opening of the enteric-coated supplement at a site distal from the indomethacin-inflicted site. Further studies on site-specific effectiveness of ATP/adenosine on intestinal permeability changes are warranted.</p
Measurement of the proton and the deuteron structure functions F2p and F2d
The proton and deuteron structure functions F2p and F2d were measured in the
kinematic range 0.006<x<0.6 and 0.5<Q^2<75 GeV^2, by inclusive deep inelastic
muon scattering at 90, 120, 200 and 280 GeV. The measurements are in good
agreement with earlier high precision results. The present and earlier results
together have been parametrised to give descriptions of the proton and deuteron
structure functions F2 and their uncertainties over the range 0.006<x<0.9.Comment: 22 pages, using LATEX, 12pt, epsfig.sty, rotating.sty; 2 tables and 6
