Germination energy and seed germination of cultivated plants as indicators of water contamination with nickel
Heavy metal pollution of water ecosystems is currently one of the major environmental problems. Nickel (Ni+2) is a metal that usually occurs in the environment at very low levels. However, its presence in water at higher concentrations is becoming more frequent, as a result of antropogenic activity. The majority of cultivated plants do not tolerate high concentrations of nickel in the environment. Therefore, its detection in water is of great importance for irrigation water risk assessment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the tolerance of sunflower, maize, buckwheat, cabbage and white mustard seeds to different levels of nickel in water and assess their potential as bioindicators of water contamination with this heavy metal. Bioassay was carried out according to a standard filter paper method, and the results were processed with statistical software SPSS 17, using Duncan’s multiple range test. The effect of nickel on GE and G differed depending on plant species and the applied concentration. GE and G of sunflower seeds were significantly inhibited by Ni+2 when applied at MAC rate for irrigation water (100µg/l), while maize and buckwheat seeds were tolerant to MAC rates of this metal. Ni+2 stimulated GE and G of cabbage seeds at MAC for irrigation water (100µg/l) and G of white mustard seeds at MAC rate for II class of water (ICPDR - 50µg/l)
The legal framework for protected areas management in Serbia, Montenegro and Croatia
The paper analyzes the laws related to the management of protected areas,
i.e., determining the meaning of the content and characteristics of the texts
of the laws regarding management, in order to identify possible identities,
absences or contradictions in meaning. The aim of this research is to find
out the nature of the legislation related to the management of protected
areas, on the basis of the characteristics of the paragraphs in the observed
laws of the selected countries. The analysis was carried out for three
countries: Serbia, Montenegro and Croatia. Bearing in mind that these issues
are subject of several different laws, the following acts were taken into
account: the Law on Forests, the Law on Environmental Protection, the Law on
Nature Conservation and the Law on National Parks. In all the observed
countries, general entries are predominated (63.9%), while the entries with
organizational (24.9%) and economic (11.2%) characters are much less common.
When it comes to individual entries, “Protection” is the most frequent,
followed by “Ecology” and “Status / Function”, all of which belong to the
group of general entries. In the group of entries with organizational
character, “Users” is dominant, and in the group of entries with economic
character, the most important is “Forestry”. When regulating protected area
management issues, law drafters should be more focused on defining concrete
solutions, which will improve work in practice, and thus satisfy the basic
purpose of their adoption (protection of selected areas of social
significance). [Project of the Serbian Ministry of Education, Science and
Technological Development, Grant no. 43007: Studies of climate changes and
their impact on the environment - monitoring impacts, adaptation and

Pancreatic carcinoma: The contribution of CA 19-9 to the enhancement of diagnostic precision of imaging techniques
Background: Ultrasonography (US) and magnetic resonance (MR) are the most important imaging techniques in the diagnostics of pancreatic carcinoma and disease staging; they are also very useful in monitoring and follow-up of treatment efficacy. The problems with imaging diagnostics arise in certain cases of pancreatic focal lesions - for example in the differentiation of focal chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic carcinoma. Our objectives were the evaluation of US and MR reliability and determination of the importance of oncomarker CA 19-9 in the diagnostics of pancreatic carcinoma. Methods: Our investigation included patients with pancreatic focal mass suspected of malignancy. All patients were examined by ultrasonography, MR, and ultrasound-guided needle biopsy. Cytopathologic examination of the bioptic samples was used to diagnose the disease. Oncomarker CA 19-9 was done in all patients. Results: MR imaging and US examination made possible the correct diagnosis of carcinoma in case of 17 patients; in three patients with focal chronic pancreatitis the diagnosis was false positive. No case of false negative diagnosis was found. The value of oncomarker CA 19-9 was determined and it was clearly positive (over 150 U/ml) in all patients. Conclusion Imaging techniques gave good results in the evaluation of pancreatic pathology. However, when using imaging techniques differential diagnosis between focal chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic carcinoma seems to be major problem. Correlation of imaging technique and identification of CA 19-9 has an important role in the diagnostics of pancreatic carcinoma. Imaging techniques and identification of oncomarker CA 19-9 are complementary methods in the examination and diagnostics of pancreatic carcinoma and they allow better precision of diagnosis of pancreatic focal lesions
Primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the uterine cervix: A case report
Primary uterine cervical non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) are rare. Limited experience dictates careful pretherapy evaluation and multidisciplinary approach in treatment planning. A 53-year-old woman presented with postmenopausal bleeding and PAP smear IIIb. Cervical biopsy and endocervical curettage biopsy revealed NHL of the uterine cervix. Abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral adnexectomy was followed by pelvic lymphadenectomy due to lymph node metastasis, 21 months after the primary operation. Subsequently, the patient received postoperative chemotherapy. Seven years after the onset of NHL she is alive with no evidence of disease recurrence
Relation of Lipoprotein(a) Levels to Incident Type 2 Diabetes and Modification by Alirocumab Treatment
none1691siOBJECTIVE: In observational data, lower levels of lipoprotein(a) have been associated with greater prevalence of type 2 diabetes. Whether pharmacologic lowering of lipoprotein(a) influences incident type 2 diabetes is unknown. We determined the relationship of lipoprotein(a) concentration with incident type 2 diabetes and effects of treatment with alirocumab, a PCSK9 inhibitor. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: In the ODYSSEY OUTCOMES trial alirocumab was compared with placebo in patients with acute coronary syndrome. Incident diabetes was determined from laboratory, medication, and adverse event data. RESULTS: Among 13,480 patients without diabetes at baseline, 1,324 developed type 2 diabetes over a median 2.7 years. Median baseline lipoprotein(a) was 21.9 mg/dL. With placebo, 10 mg/dL lower baseline lipoprotein(a) was associated with hazard ratio 1.04 (95% CI 1.02-1.06, P < 0.001) for incident type 2 diabetes. Alirocumab reduced lipoprotein(a) by a median 23.2% with greater absolute reductions from higher baseline levels and no overall effect on incident type 2 diabetes (hazard ratio 0.95, 95% CI 0.85-1.05). At low baseline lipoprotein(a) levels, alirocumab tended to reduce incident type 2 diabetes, while at high baseline lipoprotein(a) alirocumab tended to increase incident type 2 diabetes compared with placebo (treatment-baseline lipoprotein(a) interaction P = 0.006). In the alirocumab group, a 10 mg/dL decrease in lipoprotein(a) from baseline was associated with hazard ratio 1.07 (95% CI 1.03-1.12; P = 0.0002) for incident type 2 diabetes. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with acute coronary syndrome, baseline lipoprotein(a) concentration associated inversely with incident type 2 diabetes. Alirocumab had neutral overall effect on incident type 2 diabetes. However, treatment-related reductions in lipoprotein(a), more pronounced from high baseline levels, were associated with increased risk of incident type 2 diabetes. Whether these findings pertain to other therapies that reduce lipoprotein(a) is undetermined.restrictedSchwartz G.G.; Szarek M.; Bittner V.A.; Bhatt D.L.; Diaz R.; Goodman S.G.; Jukema J.W.; Loy M.; Manvelian G.; Pordy R.; White H.D.; Steg P.G.

Lipoprotein(a) and Benefit of PCSK9 Inhibition in Patients With Nominally Controlled LDL Cholesterol
International audienceBackground: Guidelines recommend nonstatin lipid-lowering agents in patients at very high risk for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) if low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) remains ≥70 mg/dL on maximum tolerated statin treatment. It is uncertain if this approach benefits patients with LDL-C near 70 mg/dL. Lipoprotein(a) levels may influence residual risk. Objectives: In a post hoc analysis of the ODYSSEY Outcomes (Evaluation of Cardiovascular Outcomes After an Acute Coronary Syndrome During Treatment With Alirocumab) trial, the authors evaluated the benefit of adding the proprotein subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitor alirocumab to optimized statin treatment in patients with LDL-C levels near 70 mg/dL. Effects were evaluated according to concurrent lipoprotein(a) levels. Methods: ODYSSEY Outcomes compared alirocumab with placebo in 18,924 patients with recent acute coronary syndromes receiving optimized statin treatment. In 4,351 patients (23.0%), screening or randomization LDL-C was 13.7 mg/dL or ≤13.7 mg/dL; corresponding adjusted treatment hazard ratios were 0.82 (95% CI: 0.72-0.92) and 0.89 (95% CI: 0.75-1.06), with Pinteraction = 0.43.Conclusions: In patients with recent acute coronary syndromes and LDL-C near 70 mg/dL on optimized statin therapy, proprotein subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibition provides incremental clinical benefit only when lipoprotein(a) concentration is at least mildly elevated.
