    Remote sensing of coastal vegetation in the Netherlands and Belgium

    Vegetation maps are frequently used in conservation planning and evaluation. Monitoring commitments, a.o. in relation to the European Habitat Directive, increase the need for efficient mapping tools. This paper explores methods of vegetation mapping with particular attention to automated classification of remotely sensed images. Characteristics of two main types of imagery are discussed, very high spatial resolution false colour images on the one hand and hyperspectral images on the other. The first type has proved its qualities for mapping of - mainly - vegetation structure in dunes and salt marshes. Hyperspectral imagery enables thematic detail but encounters more technical problems

    Ecology, management and monitoring of grey dunes in Flanders

    Grey dunes are a priority habitat type of the European Union Habitats Directive and demand special attention for conservation and management. Knowledge of the ecology of coastal grey dunes can contribute to this policy. Dune grassland succession is initiated by fixation and driven by the complex of soil formation (humus accumulation) and vegetation development. Leaching and mobilization of CaCO3, which are important in nutrient dynamics, complicate the picture. At present, grass- and scrub encroachment greatly overrules these fine scaled soil processes and causes substantial loss of regional biodiversity. Belgium has an international responsibility in grey dune conservation because of the limited range of its characteristic vegetation, flora and fauna. As biomass removal seems essential in grassland preservation, grazing is an important management tool.     Impaired autoregulation of renal blood flow in the fawn-hooded rat

    The responses to changes in renal perfusion pressure (RPP) were compared in 12-wk-old fawn-hooded hypertensive (FHH), fawn-hooded low blood pressure (FHL), and August Copenhagen Irish (ACI) rats to determine whether autoregulation of renal blood flow (RBF) is altered in the FHH rat. Mean arterial pressure was significantly higher in conscious, chronically instrumented FHH rats than in FHL rats (121 +/- 4 vs. 109 +/- 6 mmHg). Baseline arterial pressures measured in ketamine-Inactin-anesthetized rats averaged 147 +/- 2 mmHg (n = 9) in FHH, 132 +/- 2 mmHg (n = 10) in FHL, and 123 +/- 4 mmHg (n = 9) in ACI rats. Baseline RBF was significantly higher in FHH than in FHL and ACI rats and averaged 9.6 +/- 0.7, 7.4 +/- 0.5, and 7.8 +/- 0.9 ml. min-1. g kidney wt-1, respectively. RBF was autoregulated in ACI and FHL but not in FHH rats. Autoregulatory indexes in the range of RPPs from 100 to 150 mmHg averaged 0.96 +/- 0.12 in FHH vs. 0.42 +/- 0.04 in FHL and 0.30 +/- 0.02 in ACI rats. Glomerular filtration rate was 20-30% higher in FHH than in FHL and ACI rats. Elevations in RPP from 100 to 150 mmHg increased urinary protein excretion in FHH rats from 27 +/- 2 to 87 +/- 3 microg/min, whereas it was not significantly altered in FHL or ACI rats. The percentage of glomeruli exhibiting histological evidence of injury was not significantly different in the three strains of rats. These results indicate that autoregulation of RBF is impaired in FHH rats before the development of glomerulosclerosis and suggest that an abnormality in the control of renal vascular resistance may contribute to the development of proteinuria and renal failure in this strain of rats

    The role of macrofauna in the functioning of a sea floor: is there any seasonal, density or functional identity effect?

    Macrobenthos influences rates and intensities of benthic processes. The way in which these processes are affected depends on their densities and functional characteristics in terms of sediment reworking (bioturbation and bio-irrigation). This study focuses on the importance of three different functional groups (FG) of macrobenthos in the ecosystem processes of the Western Coastal Banks area (Belgian Part of the North Sea). Macrobenthic activity depends on temperature and food availability. Therefore two lab experiments were performed: one before sedimentation of the phytoplankton bloom (spring: low food availability and temperature) and one when organic matter had been settled on the sea bottom (late summer: high food availability and higher temperatures). Single - species treatments of key-species belonging to three different functional groups were added to microcosms at three density levels (average natural, lower and very low) to account for possible density declines. These species are the bivalve Abra alba (FG: biodiffuser), the tube-building polychaete Lanice conchilega (FG: piston-pumper) andthe predatory polychaete Nephthy sp. (FG: regenerator/gallery-diffuser).In both winter - and summertime, L. conchilega had a more pronounced influence on oxygen consumption and release Nephtys sp.. Abra alba appeared to be a more effective sediment reworker than Nephtys sp. in both seasons. In addition, ecosystem functioning (as oxygen consumption by the sediment community and bioturbation) seems to be related to animal densities. As such, a decline of densities (due to anthropogenic or natural disturbances) most probably will decrease the rates of ecosystem functioning in theWestern Coastal Banks area
