This series contains the records of the Boston Missions Offices for the publication of the Al Baghdadi and The Jesuit magazine. It is divided into two sub-series, one for each publication. Issues of the publications are stored elsewhere, most often in RG 14 Publications or with the collection of the corresponding work or individual. The Al Baghdadi was a newsletter about the Iraq Mission published irregularly from 1932 until 1966. The first issues were printed on shipboard while on route to Iraq. Later, material for the Al Baghdadi was sent to Boston and the newsletter was printed and distributed from Massachusetts. The Jesuit follows Jesuit Missions magazine and the Jesuit Seminary News magazine. It was published as a cooperative venture of the Maryland, New Orleans, New York, Oregon, California, New England, Wisconsin, Chicago, and Detroit Provinces. Each Province had a regional page spread in each issue. The New England Edition was published from 1968 to 1983

The New England Province took over the staffing needs of the established mission in Jamaica from the Maryland Province in 1927 and fund-raising for this mission was shared by the Province Treasurer and Fathers in various parishes and schools. When the Province began a new mission to Baghdad, Iraq in the early 1930s, fund-raising for the growing mission work required more supervision. Two new offices were created to meet these needs: Director of the Jesuit Seminary Guild and Mission Procurator. In addition to fund-raising, the duties of the Mission Procurator, and the successor offices, included acting as aide to the New England Provincial; acting as aide to the Superiors, Vice Provincials, or Provincials of mission areas assigned to the New England Province; representing the Province missions and missionaries at meetings; providing personal services to missionaries on leave, processing and shipping of supplies and equipment; and, acting as liaison between the missions and the home province. This series contains the records of the Directors of the various Missions Offices: Jesuit Missions, Jesuit Foreign Missions, Jesuit Seminary & Mission Bureau, and International Apostolates or International Ministries (depending on the year). The collection contains correspondence with various groups and individuals as well as reports and subject files. The collection dates from 1934-2011. There is little material from the 1930s until the 1950s and then the volume of records began to increase. The Directors Records are sub-divided into two series: Curia Correspondence and Directors’ Files. The Curia Correspondence consists of letters between the Mission Office and the Provincials Office and with Richard Cardinal Cushing. The Curia Correspondence covers 1956 to 1971. The Directors’ Files in this series are those which were clearly identified as one person’s file and are not part of a subject files series

Responsibility for the mission was assigned to the New England Province. Over time, the mission consisted of two schools for the general public: Baghdad College and Al Hikma University, an Arabic House of Studies for Jesuits, and a Minor Seminary. The government in Iraq was far from stable. In early September 1968 the new government announced that Al Hikma would be “Iraqicized”, meaning that the Iraqi government would take over the school and its administration. The Al Hikma Jesuits left Baghdad in late November 1968. Nine months later, on August 29, 1969, the thirty-three Baghdad College American Jesuits received notification of dismissal from the country as well. Two Iraqi Jesuits remained as Prefects of the Students for Baghdad College and taught religion, choosing to leave Iraq in 1970. The New England Jesuit Foreign Missions (NEJFM)—Iraq Series is sub-divided into the following series: Alumni and Reunions, Contracts/Essential Documents, Iraq Expulsion, Finances, Historical, Places/Works—Al Hikma, Places/Works—Baghdad College, Province Planning and Superiors’ Correspondence. It covers the early 1930s to the 2000s. The bulk of the records are from the 1950s and 1960s. The Financial records are the most extensive

The English Province of the Society of Jesus had been in charge of missionary work in Jamaica and supplying missionaries to Jamaica from 1837 until 1893. In 1893, Fr. General entrusted the Jamaican mission to the American Province of Maryland-New York. In 1929, the New England Province fully assumed the duties of administering the Jamaican mission. In 1980, the status of the Jamaica Mission was changed to that of a Dependent Region by Father General Pedro Arrupe, S.J. On November 23, 2014, the Dependent Region of Jamaica was suppressed by decree of Father General Adolfo Nicolas, S.J. and its members and works became an independent community of the New England Province. On December 3, 2014, the New England and New York Province united to form the USA Northeast Province. The bulk of the collection dates from the administration of the mission by the New England Province in the 1930s and includes histories, correspondence, financial material, brochures, publications, visitation reports, and photographs. This material is divided into the following subject categories: Bishops’ correspondence, installations and general information, Contracts related to works in Jamaica, Financial information specific to the Jamaica Mission, papers and reports on the History of the mission which contain photocopies of documents regarding Jamaica pre-dating the New England Province’s responsibility for the island. It also contains some original documents from the early 1900s when the Maryland-New York Province administered the Jamaican mission. Also included in this series are Province Planning and Summer Programs files that contain much descriptive information. Correspondence and documents related to places and works in Jamaica and Mission Superior’s Correspondence with the Boston Mission Office are also included. The Visitation Reports are restricted
