    Localization of parathyroid enlargement: experience with technetium-99m methoxyisobutylisonitrile and thallium-201 scintigraphy, ultrasonography and computed tomography

    Technetium-99m methoxyisobutylisonitrile (MIBI), like thallium-201, has recently been introduced as a myocardial perfusion agent and is now also showing very promising results in parathyroid scintigrapy. The results of 201 Tl/ 99m Tc-pertechnetate and 99m Tc-MIBI/ 99m Tc-pertechnetate subtraction scintigraphy, ultrasonography and computed tomography are presented in a series of 43 patients operated on for hyperparathyroidism. All four imaging modalities were confirmed to be reliable, scintigraphy being the most accurate. Sensitivities ranged from 81% to 95%, that of 99m Tc-MIBI being the highest. Moreover this tracer, which has more favourable physical and also biochemical properties, yielded images of superior quality. This allowed localization of the lesion by visual inspection only in as many as 86% of the patients with positive 99m Tc-MIBI/ 99m Tc-pertechnetate subtraction scintigraphy. We believe that the higher sensitivity, superior image quality and lower cost of 99m Tc-MIBI imaging will make 99m Tc-MIBI the new radiopharmaceutical of choice for parathyroid scintigraphy (when one takes into account the stability of labelling with large activities it is possible to perform three or four cardiac studies together with one parathyroid scintigraphic examination using one lyophililzed vial).Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/46834/1/259_2004_Article_BF00182301.pd

    Movements and interactions of leukocytes in microgravity

    The mitogenic activation of human lymphocytes resuspended in vitro is dramatically reduced in microgravity. As cell-cell contacts are one of the elements essential for activation, the behaviour of human leukocytes (mainly lymphocytes and monocytes as accessory cells) in the presence of the mitogen concanavalin A was studied in the centrifuge microscope NIZEMI at 0 × g. Aggregates (formed by intercellular bindings of membrane glycoproteins via the tetravalent α-glucoside ligand concanavalin A) were found at 0 × g as well as at 1 × g already 12 h after the addition of the mitogen. In general, the aggregates observed at 0 × g after an incubation time of 46 and 78 h were smaller than the corresponding aggregates in the ground control. The findings are of primary importance since they confirm the indirect evidence we had from earlier Spacelab experiments and demonstrate that cell-cell contacts are occurring also in microgravity. In addition, single cells in 0 × g show a significant higher locomotion velocity than the cells at 1 × g. The fact that the locomotion capability is not decreased during the 78-h incubation with concanavalin A provides further evidence that the cells are not proceeding through the cell cycle

    The Effect of Submaximal Exercise on Jugular Venous Pulse Assessed by a Wearable Cervical Plethysmography System

    The jugular venous pulse (JVP) is a one of the crucial parameters of efficient cardiovascular function. Nowadays, limited data are available regarding the response of JVP to exercise because of its complex and/or invasive assessment procedure. The aim of the present work is to test the feasibility of a non-invasive JVP plethysmography system to monitor different submaximal exercise condition. Twenty (20) healthy subjects (13M/7F mean age 25 ± 3, BMI 21 ± 2) underwent cervical strain-gauge plethysmography, acquired synchronously with the electrocardiogram, while they were carrying out different activities: stand supine, upright, and during the execution of aerobic exercise (2 km walking test) and leg-press machine exercise (submaximal 6 RM test). Peaks a and x of the JVP waveform were investigated since they reflect the volume of cardiac filling. To this aim, the Δax parameter was introduced, representing the amplitude differences between a and x peaks. Significant differences in the values of a, x, and Δax were found between static and exercise conditions (p < 0.0001, p < 0.0001, p < 0.0001), respectively. Particularly, the Δax value for the leg press was approximately three times higher than the supine, and during walking was even nine times higher. The exercise monitoring by means of the novel JVP plethysmography system is feasible during submaximal exercise, and it provides additional parameters on cardiac filling and cerebral venous drainage to the widely used heartbeat rate value
